Hi again everyone,

I recently asked a question and got some great advice on buying a reliable second-hand car under £3000.... Read more

I can't imagine buying any of those tbh all a bit gimmicky. But I do like Rainx, that's on my shopping list. I prefer the useful accessories rather than stickers etc.

Having just bought a Skoda I've bought quite a few accessories and little add-ons such as:...

Just walking back from town and near home on a narrow pavement I heard a shout from behind "MOVE". Turned to look and hit a cyclist who was trying to pass me on the pavement a glancing blow that ended up with him going onto the road. Luckily there was no traffic and all he did was shout a stream of abuse and carry on.

Now this is a footpath, its not a cycleway of any description. Local combined footpaths are signed as such and have a demarkation line, there are none on this plus its too narrow. Just ahead of me walking towards me at the time were a couple with a double buggy, it filled the pavement. The cyclist would have been unable to pass those pedestrians.... Read more

Most of this is simply down to basic manners. If you wanted to pass someone on narrow pathway while on foot the normal curtecy would apply. A simple 'excuse me while I pass' does it without problem or offence. However put someone on a bike or in a car and all rules of poilte behaviour are suspended. There was nothing to stop this particular cyclist from slowing right down, making his prescence known by speaking to skidpan and requesting to pass.

I have some sympathy with cyclists because the roads seems very dangerous sometimes so the pavement is a nice option, but surely if decent manners and common sense were used the problem would not exist. However the cycling 'gestapo' do not do the cyclists cause any good at all. Seemingly expecting a complete free hand because they are saving the planet, yeah right!! Extremism in any form is just that. Not a nice trait....

Hi

So Engine for my Mazda 6 2015 seized yesterday. Took it to Mazda, said in needs a new engine.... 9k....

Was driving then all of sudden no acceleration and engine and oil light came up. Drove to side of road. Tried to restart, first time it cranked, second time just died... Had if for a year and a half, disappointed would be an understatement. just out of warranty for last 6 months

They said they will speak to Mazda as i have had all service history at Mazda since I got it (1.5 years ago).

Problem is before that the service was not at Mazda so doubt anything will come of it, That's what the guy on the phone from Mazda was hinting at.

I'm in UK. Any help with what my options could be? Can I claim anything from Mazda since I just had my service there last month?

Would a local garage be of any help, second hand motors? Dont want to go down a route where I am just spending more an more cash on it without getting a fix.

Any help/advice would be great.

Thanks Read more

Hey. To give you guys an update.

I have got the engine fixed/rebuit. Timing chain and gone and bearings. Engine fixed and running ok however the dpf has gone.. mechanic says he tried cleaning but did not work, checked the fuel injectors all ok so it needs a new one, they said they put a hole through the original one in order for car to run! Car runs fine now apparently except when it's still/idle there is white smoke coming out....

I'm perplexed by the OP's statement that they'd looked into ex funeral cars but the sums didn't add up. I've never gone onto Autotrader looking specifically for such a car but I do notice them from time to time, and they often strike me as being exceptional value for money.

My other halfs been with Esure for a while now...theyve been fab, never a problem with them. And they price match too. When his insurance was up for renewal in August they quoted him more or less the same as he was paying for his last policy. But each year he always uses comparison sites to find a better deal. His quote came in with Esure as the best but only £34 a month. I made a note of quote ref number, rang Esure gave them the ref number and they price matched it.

Not sure if my insurers (Go Skippy) do the same but i dont think ill be using them next year anyway. Their customer services are a nightmare too.......

It’s not just the speed bumps or humps, it’s the potholes and sunken roadway surrounding them especially on the down side making the bounce even heavier.

My car was serviced at 60k in Sept 2016, MOT on the Friday, 250 mile round trip inc 70mph on the A9 dual carriageway on the Saturday, so you’ve guessed it – 50 yards down the road on Sunday and the first speed hump broke the front right spring.

And no, it wasn’t £141 for two new front springs and mountings either, a lot more than that from the Main Dealer. Fortunately no tyre damage, but new shock absorbers required in the next six months.

I have 3 cars, one, an Alfa 159 which, even at walking pace, can scrape the spoiler on our local bumps. I have also had to replace the rear springs that were broken when I had a full load. I stress that I drive VERY carefully over these bumps. My other cars are a 1962 Triumph TR4 that cannot be taken on any road with speed humps in our city, Carlisle, because they will rip off the exhaust and I also have a 1927 Morris Cowley which can cope with the bumps but they are likely to eject driver and passengers from their seats!

Front tyre losing pressure and it is the wheel itself that is to blame for this. Attempts to re-seal have failed. Can I refurb this or should I get a new wheel? I ask because I’ve been led to believe that if the wheel is bent, which I assume it is, it needs replacing because straightening would weaken the rim. Many thanks for advice. Read more

What attempts have been made? The usual cause is corrosion around the rim where the tyre bead sits. Take a mug of water, add six drops of washing up liquid and, using a paint brush, paint in the groove where the tyre meets the rim. Bubbles will show where the problem is. Take the wheel off to do both sides. Mark with chalk. Find a back street second hand tyre wallah who should be able to cure it for a tenner with a good scrape and wire brushing and smear of black bituminous gunge. If the wheel is dinted and out of balance it will be obvious when he spins it on the balancer. Unless you have regular long high speed motorway runs a mild imbalance can be negated to tolerable levels with weights. If the dint is too severe, you could try beating it out with the aid of a blow lamp - carefully with alloy because it will crack more easily than steel. Use a large round-headed hammer, or small sledge hammer via an old spoon or piece of wood to disperse the blow. I have done this in the past with success when there is nothing to lose if it cracks. Might be worth painting the tyre as well - I was recently fooled by rim corrosion AND an invisible tiny nail!

Hi all, I’m looking for some advice please?? When my Peugeot 208 was last MOT’d we were told by the time it’s next one came it would probably fail on something to do with leaking exhaust fumes (or something like that) - the mechanic touched this cylinder shaped object on the underside of the car, which was a sort of rough material on the outside (vague, I apologise!) and demonstrated on how his hand was covered in black to prove his point. Does anyone know what this is??? The next MOT is due in January and we’re just trying to be as prepared as we can. ?? Many thanks in advance, Sam Read more

All these places are only as good as their manager and how he (usually a he) trains his staff.

Some want to make money immediately and will fleece you: the better ones take the longer term view that if they do the repair you need, you may well come back next time you need new tyres or an exhaust system.
