Failing seems to be in my blood. I was composing an anwer to Bathtub Tom when the cursor vanished. It worked on other threads but stayed disappeared on mine.

Anyway, the mot record is as follows:... Read more

Cyd,

Well, you have taught me a lesson. I will have to change my ways, I can see that. This leads me on to another topic slightly related to maintenance....

Hi gentlemen

I had a first speeding letter through the post a month ago. Was doing 41 in a 30. It stated that in this range, I would be eligible to do a speeding education course. I filled it out and sent it off.... Read more

Hi,

I have a Vectra with a 55 number plate. At about 60,000 miles the oil pump seized which ruined the 1.8l petrol engine. I had another 1.8l engine, second hand, put in and carried on.... Read more

Bathtub tom,

That's my feeling too. However the main services and mot's are as follows:...

I have often wondered what the 18 inch white painted squares in the road signify. Where they appear there are usually two. Do any of the BRs know ? Read more

Nothing to do with the police. They are used by Highways' Agency road surface surveys' vans as reference points for data logging. By using the same start points they can compare changes in the road surface that have occurred over a period

I put my 2011 Civic 1.8 through a service and MOT on Saturday to the tune of £510 courtesy of my local Honda dealer. I must say, I was surprised, given that the car didn't seem to have anything obviously wrong.

At any rate, this got me thinking; should I continue taking it to Honda or should I take it to a local garage which has a good reputation but isn't a Honda or Japanese specialist? Unfortunately, despite my searching, I can't find an independent specialist anywhere near me.... Read more

the thousands of miles of other roads with damaged edges likely to drag you into a bottomless dyke

This is without doubt the worst thing about Lincolnshire roads. It's especially nerve-racking when drivers treat the back roads like a race track....

Got the one car booked in for service and first MOT today (25th June). MOT is due 30th June 2018. Previously I've always had the MOT done a few days in advance and retained the expiry date as being when it is due (ie 30th June 2019).

Dealership are saying with the recent changes to the MOT, the expiry date is generated by the sytem, and may be 25th June 2019 rather than 30th June 2019. So I may lose five days MOT.... Read more

Interestingly, if you took a 12 month old car in for an mot, when it reached 2 years old you would need to get the test done again to prevent you being in breach of the law

?? But a car does not require an MOT until it is 3 years old.

A modern Mini near me is regularly heard backfiring on the overrun. I would have thought that as all modern cars are injected and the fuel would be cut off on the overrun backfiring wouldn't be possible? Read more

Years ago working at a Saab dealer i remember being shown how Saab's of a certain era could be made to backfire extravagently, though it was pointed out to me that attempting to do this on a car without a stainless steel exhaust could prove unwise!. As far as i recall it, while driving along dip the clutch, give a few good hard presses on the throttle, switch the engine off then back on again, then, BOOM!. Not very sensible i know, but pretty funny to my juvenile mind. One time i was getting a lift home from a mechanic in his old 99 and he did it as we approached a young man walking along the side of the road, well the poor chap actually dived to the ground, probably thinking a bomb had gone off!.

www.honestjohn.co.uk/news/legal-motoring-advice/20.../ Note the comment in the first paragraph that a (fake) camera "causing danger to other road users" could lead to a seven year jail sentence. I can't help wondering, by this logic, how many real speed cameras may equally have "caused" a crash; not to mention the "real/fake" cameras of year gone by (the ones that local auhorities couldn't afford to load with film, meaning that several fake cameras were deliberately dotted around the country.)
At the same time, a passer-by waving to warn a motorist of a camera (secondary intention perhaps being to slow traffic and enhance road safety, ahem...) may also be guilty of the heinous crime of, er, revenue avoidance, wasn't it? Read more

And a lot of lane signage is painted on the road which is not a lot of use if traffic in front of you is on top of the signage.
