Hi, I purchased a 2008 Kia ceed 5 months ago, and since purchase I have had to spend £800 to keep it running correctly. First job was the ABS light coming on, I took it to my local garage and they replaced the wheel bearing; ABS bits and something else as the wheel was totally knackered and rusted over inside. This cost me £550. I recently replaced the front passenger wheel bearing as it was making a racket, this cost me 250.

I didn’t think much of it as I just figured I have to pay to keep a car running but I since did my research and found that I could have been entitled to the dealership getting these issues fixed as they occurred under 6 months of ownership and can be considered as being faulty at the time of purchase.

I’m wondering if I have any entitlement to compensation from the dealership for this work, I appreciate that I should have initially gone to them but I just wasn’t aware of my rights. Does anyone have experience of this situation? If they refuse can I go to the small claims court? Or at least threaten them with it ?

Thanks in advance Read more

No, you have no right to compensation in law.

As you yourself say, you must give the selling garage the opportunity to do the repair....

I took my Auris in for a service at a Toyota dealer and was told that the sump plug was "worn" and that it would have to be drilled out or the sump replaced. The car is under 7 years old with a mileage of about 32000. That dealer has serviced the car since I bought it 4 years ago.

I can't believe that a simple part like that which only gets unscrewed and screwed back in once a year could be worn and need replacement. I suspect that it has either been cross-threaded or over-tightened and that the garage is covering up for its own negligence.

What do people think about this? Should I insist the dealer cover the cost of fixing it?

Driving from North Wales to my son's gaff in Cheshire the other day, I was followed for much of the way by a chap in a 4x4.

He got a bit close occasionally, but never actually tailgated for more than a few seconds at a time, soon dropping back when he realised I wouldn't break the speed limit to allow him to make more progress.... Read more

I've slowed down and let tailgaters past hundreds of times, much rather they caused an accident with someone else instead of me.

Since i've resumed driving Hlux/Landcruisers its no longer an issue, if they get close enough i can't see them anyway and have developed peripheral vision techniques with the mirrors, where i never actually look in any of them when i realise i have a tailgater in a vehicle high enough to be seen or one who hogs the crown of the road 6ft off my back bumper but lacking the wit to overtake normally....

If the law gives engineers loopholes to exploit, they would not be doing their job if they did not do so. Why do you think Ferrari are doing so badly in this year's F1?

Not so funny thing happened. Popped to shops, parked up, got shopping came back to car, fob worked to allow access, put blade key in ignition, turns 2 /3rds of way but not all the way to start the engine. (very annoying). lights on dash work, electric windows open, sunroof opens etc, but no engine start, chiming noise and flashing security light.

On way to the shops and whilst driving did note that there was an unfamiliar clicking noise to the left hand side backseating area of the car very similiar to the car doors locking themselves, which in fact did happen. i just rectified this when i stopped driving by pressing the open button on the key fob and got out of the car (didnt think anything of it - it never happening before). There was not anything that was pressing against the key fob whilst i was driving to have caused the clicking and the doors to lock by themselves.... Read more

OK Update.

The Graphite Dust worked a treat to get the key to fully turn in the ignition. Managed to obtain some from a local hardware store. So many thanks for that tip:-)...

All websites are reporting two Jimny versions; a home market Kei class 660cc narrow car and an international Sierra wider car.

Indian commentators talk of a K15B 1.5 litre updated engine, built in India. It appears this same single engine may be used internationally rather than the 1.0 boosterjet. But the K series stats appear old school, in particular for the UK CO2 emissions of 154 g/km manual and 170 g/km auto. With the automatic being a four speed.

Surely there's an error.

154 g/km equates to a year one tax of £500+ for a circa £13-15,000 car

A four speed box when they have an existing six speed torque converter

And to top it all fuel economy similar to the third generation version.

Diesel engined vehicles are better for staying where they are they are but even they will creep on an incline but much more slowly as the compression is much higher. The reason that much older diesels would be left in first or reverse depending on the direction the vehicle was facing, was that they had a mechanical fuel shut of device which released after stopping meaning that the engine could start if being turned in the right direction.

All manual cars should be left in first or reverse when parked, don't rely on the handbrake.

My experience is that deaf drievrs are actually more observant than "hearing" drivers - especially those who turn up the volume on their radio/CD/MP3 players to setting 50.
