My front wipers still work but i've noticed that they no longer sweep as wide as they did. It's about 1.5 inches short on either side, the height looks ok. I've looked at the resting marks on screen and they are now sitting above both lines by about an inch. None of the electrics seem faulty. Any thoughts please Read more

It could be that you have a worn bush/bearing on the linkage that connects the motor to the wiper arm. If it's accessible, it should be fairly easy to feel for any excess movement.

I am sure that when I got an Avensis in 1998 it came with a basic (turn by turn system) satnav as standard across the range.

Well done Audi for keeping up! Read more

Captain-Cretin

All well and good, but what happens when it the satnav needs updating??

I have a friend with an A4; when he asked to get his satnav maps updated, his dealership quoted him £800 !!!

Cue one trip to H******** to buy a £60 Tom Tom.

Wouldn't it be less likely to explode if brimmed as less space for fuel vapour to form and also air(oxygen) will be excluded from the tank. Read more

We had lessons in science at shcool that would de-bunk this story, probably not taught these days due to the health and safety people /snowflakes . A tin filled with gas or flammable vapour with a hole on the top . The gas that escaped from this hole was ignited and left . Once the ratio of air and vapour in the tin was correct the mixture exploded and the tin went sky ward . Simple science, as Dr Les says its the vapour that burns or explodes and this has to be within a cirtain vapour :air ratio . A more worrying problem is that most of this generation are addicted to their mobile phones etc and believe everything they read on FB, youtube and social media..

Thought I'd share this tale of woe while my car sits at Guy Salmon in Bristol. Its been there since 18th June & not a word from them. First of all though a bit of history: Back in December 2015 I kept getting a warning saying "Park Brake Fault" - to cut a longish story short it seems that Jaguar positioned the brake computer below the tube from the windscreen wash fluid bottle. When this leaked, water dripped on to the brake computer - Jaguar did pay the entire bill - over £1000. Hartwells were very proactive & contacted Jaguar on my behalf. Well last Monday (18th June 2018) I was driving to work & every warning message you can think of came up & the car died. It was carried to Guy Salmon in Bristol. I shall add the rest of the story as it happens. Does anyone have similar experience Read more

I ran my XF for seven years from new, the only defects being a broken boot cable loom which was easily fixed and a diesel filter sensor. Mostly used for commuting, covering only 60,000 miles.

Got a Very high piched Squeek ( like abird chirping ) from rear wheel ..

Not a Rumble / not brake shoe noise / much higher pitch noise .... Read more

Can you still hear the noise when spinning up a raised rear wheel by hand, might be easier to locate like this.

If you remove the drum again it might be worth applying a touch of coppaslip (with a cotton bud or similar) to the points of contact between slave cylinders/adjusters/shoes and where the shoes rub against the back plate, also check the hold down clips are in good condition....

My roof comes up at the rear about half an inch for a length of 7/8 inches in very hot sunshine. Local dealers had a look and their technician said it 'had come unstuck' Now they want to replace the whole roof for £2500...with discount! Is this not a repair job rather than a very expensive bolt another bit on job? Read more

Hi, the SRS (Red) light has recently come on, bloke at Halfords I know put there diagnostics on and it came back with ground to earth on passenger and driver airbags. I have check all the wiring for evidence of short circuiting inc connectors. As both airbags are showing same fault is it likely to be any module/ecu anywhere else... cheers Dave Read more

gordonbennet

As noted by ElekieDoc, you need a proper chap, preferably an auto electrician on this, it is not within the scope of a general mechanic.

Warning, if the problem is inside the airbag itself the cost of either of these from Honda will effectively write the car off (had this issue on one of daughter's 2004ish Civics, new passenger airbag would have been some £1200) so a good used part is the only option.

At my last MOT I got an advisory "Front brake pad(s) wearing thin" which did surprise me as I check them when I rotate the tyres every 10K and I’m not a heavy braker – so, against my instinct, I trusted the tester's discretion and bought a set of pads (Eurocarparts 50% off sale - woohoo!) and set about changing them, it transpired the pads were only one-third worn. So I've got an advisory on the MOT history that makes it look like the car isn't maintained correctly (I never let pads wear down past their last 20%) can I get this advisory removed? Is there a process to cover this? The standard MOT appeal process states it’s to report cars that passed and shouldn’t have or ones that failed and should have passed, neither case covers my issue - not terrible in the big scheme of things – I know, however, as most half sane people check the MOT history of vehicles they buy, I like to keep my MOT histories squeaky clean by keeping on top of maintenance. Gibbo_Wirral

I wouldn't worry. Every time I get an advisory I normally do the work within a few weeks.

Its always looked good when I've come to sell the car on that I've dealt with the issue immediately and generally cared for the car by showing the MOT and the receipt for the part.
