My 8 year old 308 has just started developing a knocking sound coming from below. It seems nothing to do with the steering as it happens in a straight line. As the road deteriorates, the noise starts with each bump and increases as the bumps increment, until it almost sounds like popcorn popping in a pan on some roads . You can also feel the vibrations from the kncking. The car is well looked after and only has 60,000 miles on the clock. Cards on the table, what could it be and what would it cost to fix? Suspension? Engine mount? Axle?

Thanks for your time. Read more

I have replaced the ones on my 406 about three times, doesn't seem to make a lot of difference which ones I use, the rubber boots usually fail allowing water ingress.

A lot of problems with warped discs are the type of brake pads that are fitted.

A long shot, but it seems just possible that those discs are non-homogeneous. I had a Pug 205 in the early 90s whose brakes pulsed gently at quite a low mileage (10-20K), so I had the discs skimmed. That cured the problem for a while but it gradually returned, suggesting that the discs were wearing unevenly. I've had a string of more than ten 205s and never had that problem before or since.

Hi, I have a Audi S3 8v model, the car was taken for its major service and the Audi dealers done a diagnostic check which showed a few error/fault codes, if anyone could advise what they possible could be or what could the fix be. The dealers want £150 per hour just to look at the faults and see what the issue is. I’m hoping this site could do that before I pay the hourly rate, thank you
Diagnostic sheet reads -

J271 - Main relay, elec fault
0001- Engine control module 1
15240 - P068700 EMC/PCM- Power relay circuit control high 00100000 passive/sporadic
01- Replace control unit
16821- P060300 internal contr module (KAM) error (00100000 passive/sporadic)
J250-Data bus received fault value
10526728 - U112300 Databus error value received (001000000 passive/sporadic)

I have a picture of the sheet but couldn’t attach to this thread.
Any help or advice would be much appreciated or where to start. Read more

So it didn't cut out before it went to the dealer for a service, now it does, so the random cutting out is due to something the dealer did?

My radio reception is generally ok, but there are times when it is very sketchy, although if i drive forward a few feet, it comes back, even though i'm not under a tunnel or near a tall building.

Where is the aerial on these cars? Some say its built into rear screen, others say its a stand alone unit, though i can't see one!... Read more

OK thanks. I take it thats within the inner trim on tailgate lid?

Thing is would that explain the intermittent issue of poor radio reception?...

My Dad's 9 year old, 80 odd thousand mile Tiguan 2.0 TDI went in for a service today. He's on some pay monthly service plan with the local VW s******.

I've not got the details yet, but they're saying it needs a new clutch. Don't know what's making them suggest this, as there's no clutch slip or strange 'DMF living on borrowed time' noises and there are no shudders, aside from a very slight judder when pulling away first thing in the morning in winter. They've quoted something exorbitant to fit a new clutch and DMF, but also say that when they've said the same to other Tiguan owners, the owner has refused their kind offer and often managed another 10k-20k before needing a new clutch!!

He only does about 5k miles each year in it (generally longer runs so no DPF worries) and about 50% of that is towing a 2 berth caravan.

Given that there are no signs of impending clutch failure (no sign of slipping, even when towing), I reckon I'd leave well alone and keep a watching brief/consider chopping it in over the next year.

What are the chances of the clutch failing without warning, rather than starting to slip and giving some clear signs that it's giving up the ghost? Read more

Garage gave me an advisory after an mot to replace front shocks. I left it and next year got the same advisory, left it again, the next year no mention of the shocks.....

Too true with new parts at these prices makes sense to try pattern parts or my first port of call car breakers.

Tonight I purchased a perfectly reasonable car with 5mths Mot, 4 nearly new tyres, a recent timing belt change and barely any rust. Yes it’s a bit tatty round the edges and it’ll need a serious scrub inside but here is a perfectly viable car for £250. Can motoring get any cheaper? It’ll largely be the dogs chariot right enough, that and it’ll be used for abandoning at the pub or station in place of our other more valuable metal but the drive home in my £250 car was grin inducing. The two elderly owner Toyota Corolla 1.3 5dr (one used it for his gardening business so it’s a bit of a tip inside) is rattle free and drives spot on and all for less than the cost of a major service on our CRV. I love a cheap car challenge. Read more

The AA's of course. If they can reduce breakdown visits with preventative medicine, but still take your subscription - £££££££££££££ :-)

And you the owner saves £££££ as well by being able to repair the car before it breaks down.
