The mechanism for selecting reverse gear by mistake is broken on me VW Golfe MK2 GTI. So I have bought a replacement complete gear lever. Do I have to remove the gear box to dismantle the old mechanism and replace it?
I would be very gratefull if anybody can simply tell me yes, or no.... Read more

Hi looking for some help
car reversed out of a parking spot into me whilst i was driving , gets out , apologizes and says it was his fault, gave ne his mobile and says we can exchange insurance details, hardly any damage to his large 4 x 4 , but my fiat 500 has a bad dent around the front passenger wheel arch. ive got photos and unfortunately no witness. When i tried to call him for insurance details his phone appears permanently switched off. My insurance will obviously try to claim off him via his car reg plate but what if he just denies ever being involved in an accident? Read more
"...what if he just denies ever being involved in an accident?"
It's a sad fact of life, I'm afraid. A photo of the other car, showing registration plate, at the scene, might help. Do you have that?...
Hi all
My i40 diesel will soon be at the end of its four year lease, currently sitting with 112,000 relatively trouble free miles.
Not to sure if I want to go down the diesel route next time, and have been looking at the ioniq.
I drive a fair few miles, lots of motorway, and although HJ writes a comprehensive review of this car I would be interested to learn of any owners experiences too.
I will be arranging a test drive.
Thanks in advance.

Just for the record, Andy, SWMBO's A1 has the 125 bhp 1.4 engine which doesn't have cylinder de-activation (horrible word). So it's possible that Peugeot, Suzuki and others think that this isn't necessary for efficiency and economy.
Not a problem - the 'standard' 1.4 TSI is still a very good engine (I test drove a base spec Scirocco with it and it was surprisingly quick), just that the ACT 140/150bhp version is even better (though this comes at a price), as it apparently has an equal or better mpg figure than for the standard version. Just a shame you, on VWs and SEATs at least, have to get the GT or higher to get that engine - Skoda seem to offer it on their mid-spec SE models, which also have the added benefit of more comfortable wheel and tyre combos as standard....
Why should such claims be banned ? If people want to make claims, then they can be held legally liable if those claims are untrue.
People want to hang themselves like that, let them. Darwinism will soon tell. Read more
Most of the guff one can see through, especially dealer speak, if someone who actually maintained their own car writes an ad you can usually tell what the person is like, and 10 minutes on the phone confirms either way.

'One doctor owner' would put me off: quite possibly the car may have done a lot of short, rushed, urgent journeys, especially if the doctor was called out at night.
Or it might be a PhD.... Read more
It’s a suggestion that the car has been maintained without worry over costs as doctors tend to be rather well off. Most cars I’ve encountered that’ve came from such owners tend to be well serviced but it’s no guarantee of a tidy car body or interior wise. Our Polo came from one and the bumpers were covered in scuffs from her scrappy parking. Cheaply bought and repaired though.A friend is a manager at a doctor's surgery. He says he has'nt come across a meaner profession.

If it was advertised and sold as a Cat D you are clearly accepting that the car has had repairs, possibly major, and is not going to be as good as a regular example.
It may well be it was written off due to water ingress into the original engine or similar....

We've just had the reminder to tax SWMBO's A1, which is nearly a year old. Her initial is A, so she was lucky not to be addressed as MRSA.
It was actually a pleasant surprise as I'd forgotten that it was in such a low tax band - only £30 to renew. I can think of no reason whatsoever to have a diesel engine in any of the smaller VW Group cars, whatever your mileage.
I've just spent a nostalgic 10 minutes looking at the Halfords catalogue item on the HJ homepage. Wonderful stuff!

Second hand-over...
What happens if the dealer or test driver has an accident or gets caught speeding by a camera. The car is registered to the buyer - this could cause lots of trouble.
You have more rights to reject a car within 30 days of buying it and if the dealer holds on to it for a few weeks then this will eat in to your time to reject it if there are any problems.
If the dealer hasn't given you a receipt then the car isn't yours probably isn't event yours yet as registration doesn't prove ownership. If you paid cash and the dealer fails, this could be a problem. Remember the Nissan (Datsun) franchise owner in the UK walked away from customers of failed dealers in the '80s.

"plus a £60 fine for overstaying the 2 hour motorway services limit (which I refused point-blank to pay)"
You advise anyone receiving a parking "fine" that they have to pay. It seems that you do not practice what you preach....

No.
