Second hand-over...

What happens if the dealer or test driver has an accident or gets caught speeding by a camera. The car is registered to the buyer - this could cause lots of trouble.

You have more rights to reject a car within 30 days of buying it and if the dealer holds on to it for a few weeks then this will eat in to your time to reject it if there are any problems.

If the dealer hasn't given you a receipt then the car isn't yours probably isn't event yours yet as registration doesn't prove ownership. If you paid cash and the dealer fails, this could be a problem. Remember the Nissan (Datsun) franchise owner in the UK walked away from customers of failed dealers in the '80s.

It all sounds like a scam to me! Read more

"plus a £60 fine for overstaying the 2 hour motorway services limit (which I refused point-blank to pay)"

You advise anyone receiving a parking "fine" that they have to pay. It seems that you do not practice what you preach....

I have to agree. Hands free chat is distracting, and so is chatting to your passenger/s.

I actually think chatting to passengers can be more distracting. Read more

Does motoring law need to be reviewed to reflect the danger of distracted driving?

I'm presently without wheels so will soon be buying a 'cheap as chips' car as a stop gap, just to get me back on the road, get me through Christmas and keep me mobile until I get a bit of time in January to look around at available cars.

I'm wondering if there's some legal way I can avoid putting my name on the V5 of this 'stop gap car'. It seems a shame to add an extra owner for the sake of 6 weeks ownership. And, of course, my selling the car almost immediately after buying it will look suspicious to potential buyers and could reduce the selling price!

So to this end, could I just buy a car as a trader (even though I'm not one!)? Presumably if I just transfer my present car insurance over to whatever car I buy that will be fine and dandy? And how would the tax work? Any other potential issues?

I've only ever bought and sold cars privately. I'd appreciate input from anyone who knows about buying/selling as a trader. Thanks!

If it is really only 6-8 weeks and you only need something basic you may find a medium term hire if worth doing.

The insuarance companies pay around £10-12 a day for a basic Astra or Focus. Probably a bit less for Corsa or Fiesta size. Instead of buying cheap only to find you have actually bought a pile of junk two weeks later, you get an insured, taxed, almost new car with a replacement on tap if any problems....

OK so let’s start at the beginning.

He is a very lucky lad. Middleman must be right that the measured levels of drug were too low. Speaking as someone who was fond of Mary Jane when much younger, the other poster is right, it is not a benign drug. It has a proven association with psychosis, albeit causality has not been proven, that is very hard to prove either way. It took decades to prove that tobacco caused cancer. And it damages short and long term memory, and damages the lungs. As for hard drugs, I’ve known loads of people who used cannabis, I’ve never met anyone who went on to hard drugs....

M Veh(Driving Licence(Amendment) Regs 2017

Regulation 2(2)(a) amends regulation 72(4)(a) of the 1999 Regulations so that a Group 1 licence cannot be issued to, and must be revoked in relation to, a person who is being treated with insulin or another medication which carries a risk of inducing hypoglycaemia, if that person has experienced two or more episodes of severe hypoglycaemia while awake during the previous year, and the most recent episode occurred during the previous three months.

Regulation 2(2)(b) of these Regulations amends regulation 72(5)(a) of the 1999 Regulations so that a Group 1 licence may be issued to an applicant who is being treated with insulin, if that applicant does not fall within regulation 72(4)(a). Such an applicant would also be required to fulfil the existing conditions prescribed in regulations 72(5)(b) and (c).

Regulation 2(2)(c) of these Regulations amends regulation 72(6)(b) of the 1999 Regulations so that appropriate monitoring of glucose levels is sufficient to satisfy this prescribed condition and it is not limited only to blood glucose monitoring.... Read more

Thank you.

You would have thought this would also apply to Group 2 as well as must be a higher level of fitness to drive such vehicles...

Hi, I've recently just bought a 2013 Ford Focus 1.0 125bhp Ecoboost with only 22k on the clock from a main dealer. I have only been driving it for 2 weeks and have noticed that the reverse gear keeps popping out (about 1 in 5 times) and obviously the lovely grinding sound follows. The only way I can seem to stop it is to make a mental note to apply gentle pressure on the gearstick to stop it from popping out. But surely I shouldn't have to do this. I have taken it back to the dealer and their service guy sat in the car with me to hear it happen twice. They agreed to look at the car over the next few days and they then told me that they couldn't get gear to pop out and insisted they need to hear and feel the car do it to diagnose the problem. But surely the fact the initial service guy heard the gear pop out with me in the car is enough to help diagnose the problem. Having looked on other forums it seems to me it could be a simple fact of adjusting the gear linkage. Is it possible to check that sort of thing without removal of the gearbox, etc.? I feel like I may be being fobbed off but as I bought a 1 year warranty with them, surely they should be doing all they can to fix it. Read more

They should be able to adjust the gear linkage easily enough if they know what they’re doing.

Gearbox removal would be an absolute last resort and very unlikely.

I entered a yellow hatched bax junction which at it's end had traffic lights on green and my exit appeared clear. I just enter it and of course the lights go amber. Now Ihave a problem, if I stop in the box awaiting the lights to change I am breaking the law....if I go through the amber I'm breaking the law. I decided the safest thing was to stop and wait...what would others do? Read more

The hatched area is visible on google earth street view-''Waitrose- Basingstoke" and scroll down a little to the right. There seems to be room for about 5 cars in the hatched area with lights just before the exit. I have had time to have a good look at it on the computer but when you are driving remember you have to make an instant decision.

Hi all my first post. Having trouble with above car. Hesitates when accelerating and revs up to 3k rpm when changing gear. No error codes but on live data it's showing 12% throttle position at idle. I've seen on some YouTube videos they were were at 0%. What reading should I be getting? Read more

Steve Dickinson

Yes it will rev above 3k, what I'm trying to say is every time I change gear it's as though I'm not taking my foot off the accelerator when I press the clutch pedal to change gear and the revs briefly jump up to 3k and then drop steadily to idle.

I once read about a man in a large city in the USA who lived in a multi story condo on one of the main streets, in one of the apartments above the first floor. The weather was hot and he had the window open and his cat was asleep on the sill. He sneezed violently and the cat was startled out of its sleep and unfortunately leapt off the sill. The cat landed on the head of a motorist who was driving by in a convertible. It was the rush hour. The resultant accident took some while to sort out. The cause took longer to sort out. I think the cat survived. Read more

I'm guessing (just like he is) that he's talking about the Diesel Particulate Filter.

While many people take theirs off and replace it with a straight through pipe, there isn't one available for Peugeots, the original filter has to be opened up and modified....
