Watching 100 Year Old Driving School last night and i saw a RSPOA (Royal Society Prevention of Accidents) recommend an automatic to a older lady as she was always in the wrong gear.

We have heard plenty of horror stories re autos and older drivers... Read more

I recently changed from a manual to automatic. The process was seemless to me, but I have driven close to a million miles in the last 50 years or so. I have had auotmatics over the years (mainly inherited from company fleet ) and have no difficulty in swapping around. I have used left foot braking on occasions but it does need some concentration and nor for the timid driver. My latest vehicle has an 8 speed TC autobox and is really excellent, I think I will stay with automatic transmission, of the right kind of course. Interesting that the Caravan Club recommended this auto for towing, and it does it very well. As for elderly drivers automatic is the obvious choice as it leaves more time to concentrate on actually steering the vehicle. Also the natural reaction in an emergency stop is the same with the right foot.

Have just helped a small sranded Fedex van stuck in a dip near our hilly village....'my clutch has gone -...'. Sadly, he did not realise the traction control needs to be OFF with the orange light permanently showing on the dash if trying to get up a deeply snowed hill. I wonder how many other youngsters who may never have practised snow-driving realise this? Read more

By the way, if someone, anyone, has their wits about them, at some places i've worked the companies used to pay a fee and the road gritter would drive round the yard spreading his wares as he passed by, surely with all the brains involved in a large school it couldn't be beyond them to organise something so obvious.

The gritter driver would probably need CRB/DBS checks done to ensure low risk of photographing or kidnapping children for nefarious purposes..... as for 'brains' in a large school, who but the most dedicated and vocational brainy types would embark upon a career teaching in a large UK state school these days........

Where is my car? Said the wife. At the bottom of our road. I will get it in the spring. I had taken my skoda superb out on its budget winter tyres and initially thought they have not made much difference? It was only when i saw a mec estate gently going backwards that i changed my mind. They are really good! I then into the wife's Citigo and realized what not having winter tyres feels like. I now did the same as the Merc when trying to get back up our gently sloping road! Her car is now cafully parked behind a ford which i whope will act as a cushion should anyone fail to stop att he bottom of the hill. Wife not saying too much to me - i might have to wait for the spring thaw! Read more

Full, good quality winter tyres make an amazing difference. My RWD BMW estate is fitted with Pirelli Sottozero, and I live in rural North Wales, where lots of minor roads are not gritted - and we live about a mile from the nearest gritted section.

Just got an EML on the dash. Thought it might just be related to a bad start (didn't hold key long enough) but even after a drive light on and symptoms as above. Drives fine

I never did do anything to fix the fault - there is a Jet station near me, and ever since I stopped using it the problem has gone away. Jet is the closest station and therefore used most often, and as it wasn't 'supermarket' fuel I assumed it was OK....

Railroad.

Check the fuel pump relay behind the centre console. If you open it up and look very carefully you'll probably see the solder has cracked in a square around one of the terminals on the board. Use a soldering iron and gently re-solder the terminal. If you're not confident to do this then replace the relay.
