VW golfe MK2 GTI - Removing and replacing gear lever. - Richard Fischer

The mechanism for selecting reverse gear by mistake is broken on me VW Golfe MK2 GTI. So I have bought a replacement complete gear lever. Do I have to remove the gear box to dismantle the old mechanism and replace it?

I would be very gratefull if anybody can simply tell me yes, or no.
