Its an assembly plant using Chinese supplied kit, Chinese batteries and Chinese motors etc. Once we leave the EU they will probably move it to Poland or somewhere. I hope I am wrong and they stay and actually do some design and engineering work, or have they bought all the rights already? Read more
Hi. I'm the owner of an Audi Q3 and I love the car. However, after owning it for 6 months I am still bewildered by the technolody, particularly the satnav options. Is just me being dense or do others sympathise and have the same difficulty. Does anyone have any words of wisdom to resolve the problem. Any comments/guidance/suggestions would be much appreciated. While we're looking to replace the Honda Shuttle (see separate post) we need more luggage space for the Auris - which has no roof rails. Buying this kit new seems far too dear when it will only be used for a short period. There is a bewildering variety of boxes available on E bay, mostly for suspiciously cheap prices and 'buyer collects', but I wonder if anyone knows of an decent outlet that hires this kind of kit in the Bucks/Herts/NW London areas?

It's not really a nut that is screws into, more a kind of curved saddle. I don't think it's nylock. Just about OK when the angle where the bracket meets the edge of the roof/top of the door is right, but that angle has to be 'bang on'.

We are planning a move to Cumbria, but I will stil be working in London during the week and hence driving between the 2, twice a week, so about 6-700 miles per week round trip, mostly motorway driving. I'm therefore looking for some recommendations on cars to look at.... Read more

Nothing new!
I worked in the Insurance industry for 10 years, back in the early 80's unbeknown to the public the government were in consultation with the industry regarding new drivers. In those days and probably now over 25's were subsidising under 25's by a very large amount, Young drivers statistically cause or are involved in accidents than any other age group, If you want to drive and you have no experience and want to drive new cars as most of them do they have to pay for it.
A lot of youngsters today its a case of I want it, and I want it now, If they had to work hard and save up for months or even years they would appreciate the true worth of a car and look after it and not drive around like idiots. Of which all of us have to pay for their mistakes.
I think the Black box is the way to go and make it compulsory for the 1st 3 to five years. Unfortunately I and I am sure many others will agree in the last 30 years the overall standard of driving buy all age groups and sexes has declined, but that's another matter altogether. Read more
Fazer thou. Why on earth would you assume that most young drivers want new cars with an I want it now attitude! Lots of youngsters work and save very hard for their first cars and are very proud and care for them just as the older drivers had to do. To suggest that they drive around like idiots is such a stupid generalisation. Of course there are some that do, just as there are many older drivers that do.
Regarding the black box, most insurance companies will only supply cover when one is fitted. The problem for young people with a box fitted is being constantly tailgated and overtaken by gesticulating older drivers in 20/30mph zones who have little regard for speed limits. This is fact!
There is no benefit in pricing young people out of the market with extortionate premiums. Their money would be spent on keeping their cars serviced and safe.
And before you brand me as one of those young idiots, I am 70 years old, an Advanced Motorist and have driven over a million accident free miles since I saved up and bought my first car when I was 16.
My son has just turned 19. He spends most of his time away at university and doesn't have his own car but it's really useful if he can borrow mine when back for the holidays. I have been using 'Marmalade' for this, but they have a limitation that the car must be no more than 7 years old. As my Auris was registered in 2010, I will have to find an alternative provider soon. Any ideas for more flexible 'holiday period' insurers?

Thanks a lot for the advice.

I will always go by the initial appearance of the car. Does it look good, clean, inside and out. If it isnt I walk away. If they want some of my money they will have to work for it. If I want the cheapest I can always go to the local car auctions.

Sticking with current Golf would be best option.
Other than that go for a Leon with 1.4 Tsi engine, you can drive it like a diesel and you can have a bit of fun too. 0-60 in 7.8 secs and 50+mpg easily achievable.
Go for a one or two year old Leon and pay almost half what you would for a new Golf.
I got a 4mth old FR with 300 miles on the clock with 5k off list price, downside? - its white, but I'm getting used to it and it doesn't show scratches or stone chips!
Oh and comes with sat nav, auto LED lights, auto wipers, dimming mirror and s great sound system.
I'm guessing that since they've invested £300,000,000, they are probably not likely to default on the rent.
