Renault megane 1.5 dci 05 loss of power not all of the time just when I put my foot down with a little acceleration, over taking! Or up hill. Have seen a lot about changing or cleaning the EGR and I'm also planning on changing the fuel air and oil filter. Do you think this will help at all? And also doing it myself would this be easy to change the EGR ? Thank you Read more

That sounds like it could be a mixture of both and exactly that. Loosing power every so often when put under a little pressure but very slowly getting worse. Going to give them both ago this weekend!

Hi , just spotted a Honda Civic which I am very intrested in but checked
the MOT history and there seems to be a discrepancy in the mileage.

2015 is 60k

2016 is 98k

2017 mot shows just 68K

Could this be human error or should I look elsewhere .

Definitely a 1.8. As I said we all thought it was so slow.

Honda bhp tends to arrive very high up in the rev band and I revved it but it was still slow....

I understand that repair and advertising costs can be put against tax - but there are two things that I am not sure about. The cost of my trade policy (which includes personal use) and my trade plates. Can I put both of these things against tax? Read more

Trade policy and plates are business expenses and fully tax deductible as any tools of the trade would. Though I always had a personal policy running on our main family car so I could be regarded as having zero personal use but my accountant never mentioned it.

There is a very interesting article in the IEEE Spectrum magazine about the future of hydrogen fuel cells as applied to motor vehicles. The author is based in California, where the authorities take pollution seriously and support the motor industry in its attempts to solve the problems.

It seems that you can buy or lease several models of cars that are fuel cell driven, made by leading manufacturers including Honda, Hyundai and Toyota. All are able to compete with petrol or diesel fuelled cars with respect to range. ... Read more

It seems that battery technology is advancing at such a rate that hydrogen fuel cells for cars will become obsolete before they gain any popularity.

A range of over 200 miles is the new benchmark for mass-market electric cars, set by the latest Renault Zoe which now has the option of a 250 mile range battery. Other manuifacturers are going to have to match this....

Hi i am in the market for a used car in the UK but could do with some suggestions. My budget is £5k-£6k.Ideally it needs to be no more than insurance group 20.Critea would be something petrol, reliable, economical, manual, chain driven not belt driven, small to medium size car with some boot space. It needs to be good round town and capable and fairly comfortable at undertaking a few hour trip every now and again on a motorway or country roads.

Any suggestions ?

Thanks

Honda Civic 1.8
Kia Cee'd 1.6
Hyundai i30 1.6
Toyota Auris 1.6
Mazda 3 1.6

I'd favour the Mazda which is an absolute hoot to drive and pretty much unburstible mechanically. The Civic is much more powerful and actually slightly more economical but handling and steering feel aren't quite up to the Mazda.

Despite saying you wanted a chain driven engine I wouldn't rule out the Ford Focus, particularly the Yamaha designed 1.6 petrol. The belt interval is every 8yrs and isn't that costly unlike VAG products of the era and their daft 4yr recommendation. The Focus is great fun to drive, has plenty of room, a good record for reliability and parts are a little cheaper than most of the above. The Mazda does share the same floorpan and suspension but uses their own chain driven petrol engines and both are very similar to drive.

Buy only with proof of annual servicing, this is especially important on chain driven engines.

Hello, I was wondering if anyone could give any insight into this problem:

At about 4 AM on Saturday morning, the alarm (or at least horn sound) of my car wouldn't stop going off. So I tried to unlock it using the fob which didn't work (the light came on the fob though). Next I tried opening it using the locks on the driver's side which also didn't work. The boot would open though and when it did, the alarm stopped. So I was more or less completely locked out.... Disgusting treatment for hybrid cars. Where is the incentive for these, compared to before?!?
They emit zero in urban areas - yet pay all bit the same as a standard car. Read more

Hello! Hope you are having a marvellous day!

I am currently finishing my undergraduate studies, and I am doing my Final Year Project (dissertation) on the Electric Vehicle industry. The topic focuses on BEVs and their barriers to mass adoption.

The survey takes 10-15 minutes to complete. If you have some spare time, I would be very grateful for the help!

Here's the survey link. Read more

Thank you for your insight! The range is indeed a big problem. However, with respect to charging, battery swap could potentially resolve waiting issues. Unfortunately, for example, Tesla called off its battery swap programme. I think people just don't trust a part of their car being replaced every time they recharge.

Battery swaps only work in high population areas - those of us who enjoy days out to rural/remote parts of the country still need the range - a nice day out for me is 400 miles with repeated stops in areas that aren't even on the National Grid....

I have recently bought a 2007 mk3 Mondeo deisel. When I bought the car, the radio was asking for a code. (The unit is a 6000cd unit). I had the code among my paperwork, which I entered using buttons 1_4 and confirmed by 5. When I pressed button 5 the unit told me to wait 30 minutes and began counting down. Is this normal? Any videos I saw on YouTube, the radio came on when button 5 was pressed. Have I done something wrong? Read more

Looks like you have the wrong code for your radio.
