Good afternoon, I have a 2009 1.8tdci Ford Focus which has just done 61k (out of warranty by 123 miles incidentally).

The car has started loosing power when putting your foot down. Normal driving is not really noticeable, but if you are pulling off fast such as on a mway slip road, the car judders. This appears to be around the 2500-3000 rpm range. This evening, I attempted an overtake in the fast lane, I was overtaking a van doing 60 in the middle lane, my car immediately started juddering like mad and lost some power. As soon as I released the accelerator and re-pressed, it continued like normal and built up enough speed to overtake.

I have been in-touch with the Ford dealer I purchased the car from as I suspected it would be a turbo related issue, but they are suggesting it is the fuel filter at a cost of £135.00 to change.

I am not able to undertake this work myself and I am keen to establish if my problems would suggest the filter is the cause.
Also, forgot to say, I have had no warning lights on the dash ever.

Any help would be very much appreciated. Read more

Their diagnosis is most likely to be correct, especially with no warning lights on the dash.

Hi,

My Mazda5 car alarm light on the dashboard started blinking around Jan 2014 (it never used to do that before). Around May/June 2014, the car's alarm would randomly start beeping. Sometimes, it would stop by itself and sometimes, I have to unlock it and lock it again.

The car went in for a service in July 2014 and no issue was found. I requested a specifical check in October 2014. The car was parked overnight in the garage. The service people told me that it never once beeped and there is no problem.

It got worse as I was unable to unlock/lock the car using the button. The buttons on the car keypad would only work when the red light flashed. If it did not flash, then there would be no link between the keypad and the car.

Now, the beeping is gone but I can open the car with my key without pressing any buttons on the keypad. The red light on the key pad does not come on. I can use the car without any problem but am worried that the immobiliser has stopped working.

Can anyone advise how to resolve this?

Thank you. Read more

Previous generations of Subaru Outback have endeared themselves to their owners and the model's future was in doubt for a while as production of the old model ended with no announcement about whether the UK would actually get a new version.

I stumbled on this recent press release from Subaru UK stating "The new Subaru Outback ... is due to go on sale here in the first half of 2015" which is good news for all those interested.... Read more

“Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI) of which Subaru is part, started life as the Nakajima Aircraft Company. After WW2, they started building scooters then cars and became Subaru. They are built in the old factory that built Zero's which shot down many of our boys.”

Sorry if I digress. Did anybody ever hear the song “Johnny Got a Zero”, an American WWII patriotic song, I remember it well, perhaps I shouldn’t say that. It compares well with the advertising jingle for the insurance comparison website, sung by the irritating chap with the twizzled moustache. That one was a wildly boastful song called “Over There” written during WWI and rehashed for WWII. Both of them are on Music Youtube....

Hi,

I am looking at a C Cat car from a large car garage (non main dealer). The garage is 175 miles from where I live. The car I presume will be supplied with 'no warranty' as it says three months warranty included in sticker price and I won't buy it at the price it is listed at. The car is in the region of £5.5k, two years old. If the car develops a fault within a reasonable time period, ie six months, will the garage be liable regardless of their no warranty claim? Also, if I pay on credit card what additional protection would I have? Ie, if there was a major repair within six or so months and if the garage refused to pay would they be liable?

Thanks Read more

I can see why this is tempting - a newish car for a low price. But personally I think the risks are too great, especially with the added problem of the garage being so far away.

I'm not sure what size of car you're looking at, but if your budget is £5,500 you should be able to find a respectable Toyota (very reliable even into old age) or Ford (lots to choose from) nearer home, so that you have a practicable means of recourse in case things go wrong.

How will it function in a car? The ride will not be very comfortable. Will it comply with the regulations? Read more

At the moment they are only planned for use in agriculture/ industrial/slow moving vehicles. Possible use in low speed limited electric cars, or "milk float" types. Application in "normal" cars a million miles away, due to speed performance limitations.
