Hyundai i20 - 5 door hatchback for my parents! 7K budget HELP! - samuelodog

Hi all -

My folks just crashed their peugeot 207 ,and have a 7K budget for a new car.

They want this car to be reliable, economical, and SAFE!

They were set on another 207, but I suggested that with their budget, they could do better.

I talked my dad out of a diesel, because they only do small journeys, occasionally longer.

I advised:

Hyundai i20

Nissan Note

Anyone have any better advice? I thought Japanese was the way to go, and a small petrol engine.

Thanks in advance!

Hyundai i20 - nice car, long warranty from new which should be transferable - but Hyundai is a Korean brand and i20 for sale in Europe are "built" in India and then shipped as CKD kits for assembly in Turkey.

Although Nissan is a Japanese brand, the Note is built in Sunderland, UK.

The Peugeot 207 could be built in France, Spain or Slovakia.

Buying a Hyundai i20 was a mistake we will only make once. It was very poorly made with cheap materials, uncomfortable, it was starting to suffer well reported clutch issues at 11,000 miles and the 1.2 was gutless, even on round town trips.

If you want Japanese find a Yaris.

Honda Jazz is probably the cliche recommendation. Had three of them as courtesy cars and easy to drive, easy access and feel much bigger inside than they look from outside.

Mazda 2. Always criminally overlooked in these threads.

Easy: buy a bybrid. Both companies only make hybrids in Japan..

I've driven an i20 as a loan car (we have 2 Hyundais in the family) and it was just ok, it was a 1.2 and pretty gutless, dull inside and the seats weren't comfy for me. I've hired a Note 1.6 auto albeit 3 or 4 years ago for a week when my car was off the road and I liked it much more than I thought I would. Lots about so a better deal than the i20. Car Giant have 1 x i20 for sale and 47 x Notes!

I delivered hundreds of 207's, no road rocket as its appears to be quite heavily built, no bad thing in my book, in petrol form i found them a thoroughly agreeable car.

If they want slightly larger, an Auris might be a good bet, less fashionable than Yaris so possibly better value.

But they're built using Japanese-designed components and with Japanese management and methods. My elder daughter had four trouble-free Yarises and I don't think that this need be an issue.

There have been rust problems with some Indian-built Dacias, so maybe some caution is needed here.

But I agree that for Samuelodog's parents, the way to go is a Japanese make, and petrol power.

7k should get them a 62 plate, top of the range Nissan Note 1.4 petrol.

excellent car

Thanks all -

I was thinking my order of preference now is:

Nissan Note

Hyundai i20

Dacia Sandero

Vauxhall Corsa

Ford Focus?

Problem is - Nissan Note is only c.47 MPG

They want a high MPG - which I promised them, because newer petrols are better than older diesels in this regard.

So far, only the Vauxhall Corsa ecoflex and the Ford Focus seem to be able to match a diesel.

I know a smaller car would yield better mpg, but they want slightly larger for safety.

Any thoughts?

Do not consider a Honda Jazz if your parents are in any way disabled or have difficulty getting in and out of cars.

The seats are set low and slow quite abrutly to the rear. My mother struggled more and more to get out of the car as her problems progressed. Eventually it became almost impossible even with the various booster devices they bought and tried.

When the car was 5 years old and still perfectly reliable they had to swap it for another that she could easilly use. After much searching the choice came down to 3 but please note that these were all the previous model, the new models may not be as suitable. Ford Fusion, Nissan Micra and Nissan Note. They bought the Micra simply because it was the cheapest and was big enough for them. They used it 7 years, we have it now. Totally reliable, only parts replaced have been a broken front spring, one wiper blade and a set of tyres.

My grandparents had no problem with their Honda Jazz and getting in and out. You can't generalise so easily.

I was simply warning the OP about a problem that my parents had and I have also been told since that they were not alone.

If neither of your grandparents had a disability they would probably have been fine.

The most important thing for the OP and his parents to do is get out and actually have a look at cars then make thier own minds up as to what suits and what doesn't. Forums are no substitute for actually seeing the product.

I don't think Samuel has implied that his parents are old, let alone disabled - so this may not be the issue.

But if it is, Skidpan is right - seat comfort and ease of entry / exit can only be checked by visits to showrooms, because stiffness / arthritis / disabilities hit people in different ways.

That said, the Nissan Note is tall and upright (well, the previous model was - the new one has shrunk in the wash to avoid being the same size as the new Pulsar), and otherwise seems to tick Samuel's parents' boxes. (NB If they do mainly short journeys, petrol coinsumption is never going to be brilliant.) Auris, Yaris, Mazda 2 and Jazz are all worth looking at as well.

You are correct, the OP didn't.

But if you read the first line of my post

Do not consider a Honda Jazz if your parents are in any way disabled or have difficulty getting in and out of cars.

you will see its simply advice to the OP to consider this if necessary. Many people don't and find out too late.

Having a mother that has had much difficulty over the past 10 years or so getting in and out of cars I know its something that requires consideration.

>>>>Problem is - Nissan Note is only c.47 MPG

I wouldn't worry about that I'd be more concerned about getting something that is comfortable, easy to drive and see out of and ultra reliable so they don't get fleeced by the less than scrupulous bunch of bandits that make up so much of the motor repair trade. My parents were caught several times with a Golf that developed 2 or 3 faults a year. Replaced it with a 3 year old Auris, zero issues, the garage come and pick it up once a year for its service. I used to see my parents every month or so and take the car out to check all was ok, do the tyres and fill it up which would last them at least a couple of weeks. The car was always about one quarter full whenever I went round!

For low mileage local trips I wouldn't obsess about mpg.

All superrminis with sub 1.6 engines should do 30-40 mpg. City cars such as Aygos, C1s will get mid 40s, but don't expect much more.

We do c 6,000 miles pa as OAPs.

Our Jazz averages 42mpg.

So roughly 140 gallons a year.

At 30 mpg, 200 gallons.

Difference 50 gals at £6 = £300.

Peanuts vs a new DPF on a diesel..

Hyundai i20 - 5 door hatchback for my parents! 7K budget HELP! - samuelodog

Yeah - Im starting to lean towards the Honda Jazz-

c.£6500 for a 2011 ish model, good reliability, c. 53 mpg it seems on the right engine.

Petrol.

Think my ranking is like this:

Honda Jazz

Nissan Note (petrol or 2009 diesel (pre-DPF)

Kia C'eed

then Toyota Auris.

Hyundai i20 - 5 door hatchback for my parents! 7K budget HELP! - skidpan

c. 53 mpg it seems on the right engine

Be more realistic. If you are not you will only be disapointed as will your parents. You will not get 53 mpg, dad had his 5 years and 45 mpg was nearer the mark in mostly town use.

Kia C'eed

A Ceed petrol will struggle to do low 30's in town. A diesel will probably do low 40's in town. DPF's were fitted from Sept 2010 onwards. Our 1.6 with DPF averages nearer 52 mpg but that is in mixed use.

Agreed.

Unless you buy a Jazz hybrid. Which handles better and is quieter..

Hyundai i20 - 5 door hatchback for my parents! 7K budget HELP! - samuelodog

Thanks, I get what you're saying, but the 53 was an average projection of what it is 'capable of'.

If the Jazz is in reality 45mpg? What would a peugeot 207 with a projected mpg of 45 be? Closer to 30 I reckon. So my preference would still be the Jazz.

Hyundai i20 - 5 door hatchback for my parents! 7K budget HELP! - skidpan

The Jazz will probably be the most economical small petrol for the age/money you have to spend.

The Note will not be as economical but you will get a newer car for the same money.

Hyundai i20 - 5 door hatchback for my parents! 7K budget HELP! - gordonbennet

Don't mind my asking, but why are you against another 207 for them, if they were happy, it proved reliable and didn't fall into a million pieces in the accident, it would seem a sensible choice, especailly now its been replaced should be some bargains about.

Hyundai i20 - 5 door hatchback for my parents! 7K budget HELP! - SteVee

Kia Rio (current model) ?

similar mechanicals to the i20 - but a much nicer car IMO.

Some around for about 7K, make sure the servicing has been carried out in accordance with Kia's recommendations and the 7 year warranty should be good.

The i20 can be had new with some very good discounts ( but not as low as 7K!)

Who's going to be servicing the car ? A dealer or an indie ?

Hyundai i20 - 5 door hatchback for my parents! 7K budget HELP! - samuelodog

Its just cos they have more to spend now, and think its a good opportunity to get a decent car. Their last car was a diesel, but an older one with no dpf. They shouldnt get a diesel, thus the hunt for advice was born - can they do better than a 207? I guess the answer is yes.

Hyundai i20 - 5 door hatchback for my parents! 7K budget HELP! - Auristocrat

Why the C'eed and the Auris - both larger cars from the next market segment?

Why not the Rio and the Yaris - which are similar in size to the Jazz and Note - or the Kia Venga and the Toyota Verso S.

Hyundai i20 - 5 door hatchback for my parents! 7K budget HELP! - daveyK_UK

We still have the old shape Note and we currently have on a hire the new shape Note (company vehicles).

The New Shape Note is just as spacious and just as easy to get in and out off, Nissan have kept the wide opening doors, the interior dimensions are nearly identical to the old Note.

The 1.2 petrol engine averages 54mpg (the on boad computer says 57.7mpg but the brim to brim test is 54mpg) around town, the 1.4 engine in the old Note can vary from 36 - 46mpg around town depending on the driver.

Despite the better mpg, I much prefer the 1.4 in the old Note as it has more power and is smoother in its delivery

I am pleased that Nissan have not messed with the chassis and dimensions on the new Note.

Thanks Davey - I thought they'd shrunk it, just by looking at it from the outside. If it's just as spacious, I wonder why they've introduced the Pulsar.

Hyundai i20 - 5 door hatchback for my parents! 7K budget HELP! - Auristocrat

The Pulsar is larger than the Note (for example wheelbase is 2700mm rather than the Note's 2600mm), and is Nissan's re-entry into the Golf/Focus hatchback market segment - as opposed to the Qashqai which is a crossover.

The Pulsar is built in Spain, as Sunderland will be building the new small Infiniti

The Ceed and Auris are under consideration because the OP said they had crashed their 207 and were particulary looking for something which was "SAFE" (his emphasis)

and then in a later post he wrote:

"...I know a smaller car would yield better mpg, but they want slightly larger for safety."

Hyundai i20 - 5 door hatchback for my parents! 7K budget HELP! - samuelodog

Absolutely.

The Note and Jazz are small, but not as small as other superminis.
