I have owned my LWB 2010 Phaeton for 18mths and covered about 18k in it. It has 75k on the clock. Full VW service history and looks in great condition.

I like the purchase price of the car when used as it appears great value. However several expensive repairs later and I want to trade in. First problem was the heater. Broke down and took 5 wks at a main dealership to diagnose correctly and fix at a cost of £2000 which included a goodwill gesture. (really), Second problem was the particulate filter at a cost of £1500 to replace. Third problem which I have not had fixed is the cruise control, which is £2500 to repair. Now the A/C has packed up and the car has been at VW for 4 days without solution and currently costing me approx £350 in diagnostics ! What shall we say another £2000 to fix.... Read more

HJ always says that repair costs for a car are not based on what you paid for it, but what it cost when new.

I think that is very true....

I am looking at buying a 1.3 Combo Van and I have seen loads of really dramatic reviews online, can anyone advise me what to look for on the van, I am quite tech minded but have never dealt with these vans before and want to make sure I get a good deal, I have seen lots about cam chain tension, is this something I can check when I view a vehicle.

Thanks

Unfortunately ,the Fiat multijet engines fitted to these are not very robust.Timing chain ,injectors ,and dpf (if fitted)are all problem areas. It is not possible to check the chain without dismantling the engine.I would go for the 1.7 engine or how about a Ford Connect? The engine is an old fashioned design ,but durable.

The title seems a bit misleading. You will find that the smaller engines are generallty in smaller cars and bigger engines. The size/shape of the vehicles will affect the accuracy of the mpg figures. I believe the tests are done with the car stationary, so drag isn't an issue. When the car is moving fast, the weight is less of an issue and the drag is a bigger issue.

I think the test doesn't really prove much other than real world figures don't match the ones done in a lab. Compare a 1.25 Fiesta with a 1.6 Fiesta, and it'll prove that smaller engines are more economical. Compare a 1.0 Fiesta with a 1.0 Focus and it'll prove that a smaller, lighter shell, with be more economical.

I had a new clutch fitted on my Honda jazz 2002 15 months ago. I'm now told I need a new one. Is it possible that a clutch only lasts 15 months? I drove the car previously for 8 years with no problem. Read more

Back in the 1970's when I needed a new clutch fro the first time as a relatively green new driver we were lucky to have a good honest garage in the village. The owner asked if I want genuine parts or copies. I asked what the difference was and he said that the copies are sometimes OK but other times simply do not last, seem to remember that at the time the cheap copies were simply relined old parts.

As for price the total for the job was very little different. The labour was exactly the same and was the biggest single item on the bill. The cost saving on the parts would have been about 50%. Digging into my rapidly decaying memory cells I seem to remember that the total cost for a brand new clutch fitted was about £35 wheras the copy was about £8 less....

Disability basically signifies that you can not live by yourself or cannot earn all by yourself . You will have to totally rely on the benefits permitted by DSS . Unless we haven't heard the full story, one really does wonder what sort of idiot in a suit decided to defend the claim instead of just getting on and repairing the seat, thereby keeping the customer happy and generating goodwill.

Instead the customer has, quite justifiably, posted on here and so far over 150 people have seen the post and received a poor impression of the dealer (who has branches all over the country)..

The car was bought 2 years old and has been well looked after. Total mileage is 147,443 but over the past few months engine oil consumptiion has increased markedly (it used negligible amounts till then). I remember once reading that faulty engine breathers can cause increased oil consumption in some engines. Comments would be greatly appreciated. Read more
