Hi,
I bought Almera 2005 1.5 auto car. Recently I found the steering wheel is too hard but it feels normal when I start the engine for first time everyday. After a few minutes drive its started to feel hard. Any suggestion? Read more

I would start by looking at the level of your power steering fluid. It could also be the pump failing, but suspect the fluid level is low.

A few months ago, I was regularly getting an engine light along with code P0420 (catalyst system efficiency below threshold - bank 1), but no noticeable effects on driving or performance.

I chucked some Cataclean in the tank a few weeks back, cleared the code and the engine light has only just come on again today, but now it's code P0172 (fuel trim too rich - bank 1) and acceleration is slightly hesitant sometimes. The same code has come up everytime I've driven the car today.... Read more

Yes the three cylinders aren't the best engines...I've had a few problems with it in the 150,000 miles I've had it. When it runs, it runs fine and fuel economy is good.

So from what I've described is it likely to be a problem with the cat / lambda sensors? The garage said at the MOT last year that it scraped through the emissions and suggested the cat was on its way out.

We have a 2007 Hyundia Getz which is mainly used for my commute to work. Next year I hope to retire. I am torn between keeping this car until it dies, buying something sensible such as an i20 or a Fabia or blowing the £5000 I have to spend on something like a ten year old BMW. Your suggestions on something that would be fun but would not lead me to poverty would be much appreciated please. Read more

I'd keep the Getz as long as economically possible, well serviced, greased brake pipes and a liberal dousing of the underside with the rust protection of your choice.

It's worth little now, the bulk of it's depreciation is done, coming up are the most economical years of its life....

Main fuse is the next culprit. Probably in a fuse box in the engine bay.

Quick question for the experts on the forum! I am looking at purchasing a 12 plate Honda Jazz this week from a franchised dealer. It currently is taxed until 1st April 2015. If I buy the car shortly will I have to retax the vehicle come 1st October or will the existing VED last until April 2015? Thanks in advance. Read more

elekie&a/c doctor

The way I see it is if the car is bought before 1st october, then the tax stays with the car and is valid. If the car is purchased after this date ,then the tax is void and a rebate can be obtained by the registered keeper on the V5.However as the car is at a dealer, neither he nor you can reclaim the tax.

I was reading the HJ article on the new road tax (VED) system and it said that it remains valid until it runs out or the vehicles MOT expires.

Can anyone confirm and expand on this? As I can imagine a situation where you could be in the middle of the month and the car fails the MOT, Does this mean your going to have to retax the car and end up possibly losing a months tax? Read more

Wackyracer

As I understand it, this only applies if you are paying by direct debit.

That won't effect me then. I know it is only likely to happen vary rarely but, Still there is a chance that a car might fail it's MOT and not be able to be repaired quickly due to lack of garage time availability or spare parts.
