In response to a reader asking why he always ended up with streaks after washing his car by hand, HJ recommeded waiting until it rained to do the job. Thus using pure rain water.
Tried the suggestion yesterday using water from a water but and the results are fantastic.... Read more
Hi
I have a Renault Laguna dCI 2.0 Diesel. I noticed the other day that there was very slight spillage of water dripping from under the car.... Read more
17 degrees ambient in the sunshine could get the inside of the car quite hot, which could make the aircon run. Climate control in particular isn't always very transparent about what it's doing.
If it's coolant it will taste sweet. If it doesn't it is almost certainly condensate; or if the car has been standing in the rain earlier it could be rainwater draining out of doors, sills, or sunroof - my MX5 seems to collect run off from the hood somewhere which drains when the car points uphill....

You need to ask Ford dealer.unfortunately no one on this forum can supply codes that start with a V.
Hello. I remove the key from the ignition and the engine continues to run. It's an intermittent problem. I tried using the spare key, it makes no difference, the problem still occurs. The engine finally stops by itself after I remove the key - it takes anything from 5 secs to 2 mins. Any ideas what the problem is? Recent maintainance - the clutch failed because of a burst pipe - only repaired a few days ago! The car recently had a Sold Mass flywheel conversion kit fitted.
Thank-you, Gareth.... Read more
Thank-you for the reply.
I've booked the car into a mechanic (a relative) who can hopefully diagnose the issue and fix the problem. I'm just hoping that it's not a messy electrical issue, and that it's easy to fix! The last thing I want is to have to bring it to VW - they will cost me a fortune! £98/hour to run diasnostics.
I have owned a May 2005 Merc E320 CDI inline 6 for 6 years and 100000 mainly motorway miles. It has now done 163000 miles with oil and filter change every 10000 miles plus air filter every 20000. In the time I have owned the car it has never required anything other than routine maintenance from my local independent garage at half MB cost. Never had anything replaced apart from tyres brake pads and discs as you would in any normal car. Have I just got a good one or is everything about to fall to bits all at once rendering the car worthless??

Just looked through my fat file of service records and no there are no other bills at all apart from the routine servicing already described. Even the aircon blows ice cold and has never been re gassed. I suspect this is because I run it all the time winter and summer alike

I have exactly the same problem on a 2003 model. Identical issues and now the wipers have seized and are juddering. The wiper motor is hot! Don't know if needs new motor but again is that linked to the gear box "F"? I really could do with an answer too!
An old gent I know replaced his E190 with a newer C200. Admittedly around 10 years old now. But after 18 months of his ownership the formerly very clean car seems to be rusting around the edge of every body panel. I knew there was a problems with some Mercs but shocking to see this. Read more
Smack in the middle of the doom years.
I suspect it was tarted up for sale, cosmetic only no rust prevention, i've seen this model W203, and W210 E Class, literally riddled with tin worm long before 10 years....
Hi Trading in my Honda Jazz and one dealer took car for a test drive and looked over the car and made me a good offer. We have agreed to buy new car but the salesman has told me that prior to picking up the new car his boss will have a second test drive of the car to be traded in . What happens if just before we do the deal he finds fault and devalues the trade in car. Haven't we made a contract and shouldn't it stand other than for obvious damage etc.?

Several years ago I ordered a new car. The expected delivery was 3 months and to ensure I did not get a nasty surprise on delivery I insisted on a fixed price to swap price regardless of the car arriving early or late. The salesman said that he could not do that but when I siad it was either that or I buy from someone who could he changed his mind. The order was written out with a note confirming that this was a fixed price and both myself and the salesman signed it.
About 3 months later I got a call saying the car had arrived, all they needed to do was look at my car so they could giove me the final price. I explained what had been agreed with the salesman and they basically said sorry, the salesman had left and its a new deal now. I explained I had a signed order confirming the details and they said they had a signed order where the wording had been lined out, obviously after I had left the showroom....
Hi all,
This is my first post, although I have often found this website very helpful! I am wondering if any one could give their opinion on the best 4x4 for me? I need a 4x4 as own a horse and do occasionally have to drive over the odd field. Also need to be able to get to her in winter conditions. However, horse is retired so the vehicles main job will be a family car. I have two children and need something with more space than I currently have. Am considering Land rover freelander/Suzuki Grand Vitara... I had an old shogun once, but think they may be a little too big for day to day, plus out of my price range. Looking to spend maybe 4 - 5K. I know the older freelander have reliability issues and obviously need something reliable! Any advice/thoughts appreciated!... Read more

Returning from a trip to France, we filled up with fuel at the BP garage in Reims. Just as we left the ferry in Dover masses of whitish/grey smoke bellowed out. We limped home at 40mph unable to accelerate as this seemed to cause the smoke to belch out. Our mechanic ran various checks ruling out a blown head gasket. When he checked the fuel he found that it was oily and concluded that the fuel was contaminated. The oil hadn't come from the car (oil was fine) and the last place we had filled up was in a France. The fuel was drained (we have retained the fuel) and new petrol put in. The car was fine until we returned from a 2 hour trip (rarely use car other than for short journeys at weekends) when the same type of smoke came bellowing out again. We decided to go to Mercedes this time. They've recommended changing the fuel filter and if that doesn't work they can run a full diagnostics test for £150. If there's something wrong we could be looking at four figures. We've written to BP in France but chances of being successful are slim.
Has anyone else had a similar experience and if so what was the outcome? Read more
I will check about the engine mounted fuel pump. We have an independent mechanic (though as far as I'm aware he's not a mercedes independent) and only went to the mercedes dealer for a bit of guidance. They suggested changing the fuel filter first then for £150 they will run a complete diagnostics test. Once we know what the problem is we can then get our mechanic to sort it hopefully for a lot less.

A lot of streaks appear when the shampoo dries on the car and you just rinse without drying (thus wiping of the streaks under the water).
The shampoo often also contain sodium laurel sulphate thickeners that are not useful but leave unsightly marks.
