I wonder whether anyone has any views on whether a particular make or car has better quality components making up its construction than others. I once had a Lexus LS430 and the brake discs, for example, were very heavy and of good quality. I also think that modern cars seem to be getting lighter and flimsier components as manufacturers try to save money and push up MPG?
Anyone like to suggest a car which is better made than others - leaving out super cars and Rolls Royce's etc etc... Read more
Friend has an old VW Golf, car is all is OK apart from the heater control knob is stuck in position, between demist and vents which means it cannot be moved to operate the demist function.
Will be a big problem come winter. ... Read more
I doubt very much if the problem is with the control panel. It is more likely that the problem is with the flap and/or cable linkage to the heater box. This will prevent the control from moving smoothly. The heater panel is easy to remove.Carefully prise off the fascia of the panel,no need to remove knobs, you will then see 4screws holding it to the dash.Push it back to access the cables.hth
Thanks I'll have a look at that later !
My wife and I are elderly and she has severe mobility problems and we are looking for an SUV type car that has soft suspension (probably max 16" wheels), is automatic and, as we drive only about 7000 miles a year, a petrol engine. We have decided an SUV will probably best suit the need to carry my wife's walking aids.
I have tried several cars and my favourite so far is the KIA Carens but as with others I have looked at the available options seem to work against our requirements. For instance the top of the range Carens is not available as an automatic or with 16" wheels and the next down in the range is not available with SAT NAV. And no automatic model is available with a petrol engine.
I have also tried the Nissan Qashqai, Peugeot 3008, and Ford C Max and all of these have similar restrictions on the combination of options available. Can anybody recommend an SUV that has soft suspension and has a petrol/automatic engine option, please? Max price about £25k.

Berlingo/Partner is a very comfortable vehicle to ride in, soaks up our third world road road surfaces better than nearly anything else.
Unfortunately the auto which is now at last available is the automated manual gearbox from hell, not available with the petrol engine its not a type of box i would ever recommend to anyone, least of all our OP and his lady wife....

An 8-year old car that's well out of warranty will be dependent on a goodwill gesture from Nissan UK, usually viewed more kindly if the vehicle has a full dealer service history.
The situation in other countries is irrelevant as their legislative structures are different to ours.
Hi All,
I'm looking at Focuses around the 3-year-old mark to replace our ageing 2001/Y. Does anyone have any view on the auto box coupled with the 1.6 petrol? I like the car, but the auto concerns me, I've seen reports of problems with them... is it asking for trouble to look at an auto on these, and just be picky and stick to a manual transmission?... The main output shaft and selector shaft oil seals have been leaking and have been replaced by the main dealer. The car has covered 61,500 miles and has full BMW service history. This seems a very short life for the seals. Am I being unreasonable to expect much longer life in a quality car? Read more
And probaly use the same seals!
HI,
I wonder if someone could please help me with the correct code for my 4500 model radio. The Serial number is M097869. Many thanks. Nick Read more
Hello,
Mijn code kwijtgespeeld....4500 model serienummer: MO44450...
Just wondering if anyone can help me?
Basically my car is playing up with the gears. When I change gear I don't have to put the clutch down, i can just take it out and put it into a new gear. This is worrying me slightly because it's not supposed to do this, and I've had the car for 2 months.
Could anyone tell me what the problem will be? And how it will have been caused? I've got full warranty with Volkswagen so maybe they'll cover it?
Thanks in advance. Joe Read more
I have had to do clutchless gear changes on a number of occaisions when I have had clutch cable failure away from home but I did manage to drive a citroen XM from Slough to Dorset with no clutch as the thrust bearing had failed, but it takes a bit of practise so unless the OP has driven a lot of very old cars with no synchromeh I would suggest its a wind up.
from a very limited sample pool (my friend manages a garage), chevrolet cars have a life shelf of 5 years.
