Hi all, my sat nav has just stopped working, the i button is lit up on the screen unit, but there appears to be no power the the cd unit in the boot as it doesnt eject the cd when opened. Fuses in the passenger compartment are fine. Any help would be appreciated. Read more

Hello

Wondering if anyone can advise.

Bought a W reg VW polo approx 2 months ago and after a while, it cut out a couple of times when under load, i.e. hard steering.

I had the alternator changed under warranty and all seemed fine until this morning, when i pulled in to a parking space and engine cut out again.

Called RAC out and they ran diag tests on it and couldn't find anything wrong with it. The tested alternator and battery and said they were fine. They were at a loss.

It only seems to happen now when I turn left in to a car parking space, I.e. Slowing to a stop and steering left. Also, the car will take a while to start on the odd occasion.

Thanks in advance Read more

I would get the garage to check the live data from the engine coolant temp sensor. It may not flag a fault on the diagnostic system ,but its value could be out of range.

The basics of winter driving are: 1. Winter tyres 2. snow socks in lowland UK or chains in the boot if you are going on any slopes whatsoever 3. Turn off ESP when in snow or ice. It does not make any difference. Read more

Had an oldRange rover years and years ago, I did feel safer when the conditions were bad, only issue was If the roads were really bad the road was closed or some idiot OR HGV had had an accident therby blocking the road so not a lot of benefit in a RR. I now just have 4 season tyres for the odd week of poor weather.

Regarding the ESP - the only time it doesn't help is when you are trying to stop in snow (not frost) with the wheels locking you build up snow in front of the tyre helping you to stop...

Whilst in theory, yes, in reality no.

The tester is not allowed to disassemble any part of the car so can only go on what he can see. On many cars it is simply impossible to see what "meat" is left on pads nor what condition the discs are in. Corrosion alone probably wouldn't constitute a fail....

In the days of the cathode ray tube, it was said that a malfunctioning TV could catch fire while plugged in. Does this still apply to LCD sets?

I would imagine the danger is less as they use a far lower voltage.... Read more
