Daughter moved into Uni this weekend. In the bumph it says she cannot use anything over 500W otherwise it might trip a breaker. I cannot believe that for such a large building it cannot take more than this from each individual room.

Are they trying to limit use of electricity or is there a possibility she could trip a breaker with a 2000W hair dryer? Any qualified electricians like to comment please? Read more

When my lad was at Uni some 14 years ago now, the halls were large but segmented with a cluster of 4/5 rooms to communal kitchen and showers etc. No need for extra heaters as you could grow tomatoes in his block. Each cluster had a distribution board and from memory the ring main circuit was rated at 26 amps. I accessed this a few times to do running repairs on switches etc that had become faulty or dangerous and the maintenance staff were not the quickest to respond so superdad was always required. I recall a notice above power points giving a 5 amp/1000w maximum recommended usage on any power socket outlet outside the kitchen. 500w seems pretty mean considering the amount of stuff my daughter took with her to Uni. I too hope you have luck with this issue. Where I live (Stoke), there are a number of very unscrupulous garages that do everything from odomoter correction (as it's known), to dodgy MOT's and selling cars that have clearly been shafted through an MOT. They've got cars for sale now, for ridiculously cheap, that don't even look safe to be on the road.

A walking acquantance was telling another walker about the MOT failure of their car.

Seemed miffed that it cost them £693 to pass. Earwigging I found out that it needed 3 new tyres , all the brake linings front and rear replacing and a coil spring renewed.... Read more

That's not strictly true, a brake lining can be failed if it is less than 1.5mm thick at any point. This is obviously providing that the tester can see it and measure without any disassembly.

I've got a 2005 Peugeot 307 cc. Yesterday the fan in the car went into overdrive and is now permanently at the maximum setting. It doesn't matter whether I put a/c on or not or if I turn it down on the console. It's driving me mad! The only thing that stops it is to switch off the engine. Can anyone help in saving my sanity?! Many thanks for the advice. Sounds very much like the issue I've got. Also sounds like there's no quick fix for this one. Cheers again

My X1 has done 45000 miles--is it advisable to have swirl flaps removed(don't even know what they are but understand that they can fall into the engine)) Read more

Hi Willboy

It all depends on the engine you have and when the car was built...

Has anyone submitted their details as yet? As with the "real mpg" initiative, I think there's a very subjective feel to it, as (similar to the mpg one not including driving style and the type of driving you do [town, motorways, etc], which can often account for a large variation in mpg on cars) it does not include the following:-

  1. Whether you use the vehicle for business purposes (either travelling to meetings, etc, or [more importantly] as a tradeperson [which supposedly bumps up the premium A LOT more]);
  2. What your excesses (both compulsary and voluntary) are - this obviously can make a huge difference to the headline price, which at the moment is the only one the survey goes by;
  3. Any "add-ons" to the policy, such as medical, legal and breakdown cover, which people might forget to remove (if they are given what they are on the policy document);
  4. Whether payment is one annual charge or in installments, which can increase the cost by more than 10% if memory serves.

This all adds up to not getting the most accurate picture, which, like with the current tyre ratings, rather muddies the water in my view than gives some clarity. Read more

My HC emissions have gone up in the last two years, from low single digits at 2011 MOT to about 160 at 2013 MOT. During this period I also noticed significant loss of oil (there are no leaks). I have been adding about a litre of oil every 1,500 miles, possibly more often than that. I am wondering whether this dramatic increase in HC emissions is a consequence of the engine burning oil, and whether I should expect further rise in HC emissions which might then lead to the car failing to pass MOT (max HC 200). CO emissions also seem to have gone up, currently at 0.18 natural, 0.14 fast with the maximum levels being 0.3 and 0.2 respectively. Not sure if CO emissions are in any way related to HC emissions. The car has done less than 60,000.

Many thanks for reading and taking time to respond.... Read more
