I want to add to the several strands on here already about difficulties with Volvo V70 cam belts, tensioners and auxilliary belts. In brief, there is clearly a very serious engine weakness here that I hope Volvo fess up to soon (there has been a recall, in fairness).

My story begins on Christmas Eve 2012. My V70 D5 (2008 model, 88,000 on the clock) cuts out in a traffic jam and won't restart. The RAC man suggests its a lot worse than a low battery and suggests it is a problem with the auxilliary belt that has damaged the timing belt and tows the car to a garage. They in turn repeat what he has said: the auxilliary belt failed, wrapped itself around the timing belt which caused it to snap, resulting in serious engine damage.... Read more

The con is on - always - in the used car world, because it is so darn easy and so darn profitable. It is in fact, utterly irresistible!

Thank you Sleekitwan - that was a splendid post - it should be compulsory reading for any punter thinking of buying a used car - or any car come to that !

Hi all,
I need some help on which car to buy. I currently own a 2004 Vauxhall Corsa 1.3L. I have owned this car two years now but it is now starting to seriously damage my right knee. I'm 6 foot 4 inches tall and 16 stone. The (small) cars I've owned in the past have been a 1994 Ford Fiesta, 2000 Renault Clio, and other slightly larger cars. I had the Fiesta and Clio for a couple of years each with no problems. I have owned my current Corsa for two years and from about three months after purchasing it I started to have problems with my right knee, at first I put it down to someone done at the gym but it soon dawned on me that it is the car so it's time to get something different - I would've got rid of it sooner but it's so cheap to run. I have the seat as far back as it can go but my legs are still very much bent when pushing the pedals down. The headroom is fine but my legs (knees) have to go around the steering wheel and then my shins angled back into the pedals with my feet angling outwards. All this puts much stress on my legs and it is causing my right knee to click often. Getting out of the car is a problem too as the steering wheel is non adjustable so it pins my legs down. Others be warned, a small legroom car may be okay for the odd drive but everyday and it's a problem.
So what I'm looking for from you guys is any suggestions on which car I should purchase and your own experience of legroom in cars?? My criteria for a car is as follows:
1) Smallish - so I can park in tightish spots (Fabia, Jazz to Focus, Civic)
2) Good on the MPG - I don't want a thirsty car
3) Something half reliable - something that isn't French :-s
4) Cheap - I'm not fussed about the make as I'm not a label person

I guess I'm looking for suggestions like, for example, "I would've thought the Ford Focus has lots of legroom but it doesn't", or "a Honda Jazz looks tiny but it has lots of legroom". I'll worry about sourcing the car at a good cost I just need to know a car to search for that has good legroom but isn't a big car. All suggestions welcome!!!
Thanks in advance. Read more

My daughter has a 52 plate 307 Rapier hatchback which has been an excellent car. However the other day the heater blower motor sddenly stopped working whilst on the fast speed and will now not operate on any speed. I thought the problem would be a fuse but am unable to fine any reference to a fuse in the Haynes manual or the Peugeot handbook, I have now been told the problem is likely to be the blower motor resistor faulty, however previous experience with blower motor resistors (Vectra's) the fan will still usually operate on full speed.

Can anyone help and advise, if it is a fuse where is it located and what number/rating... Read more

I have checked the actual blower motor current while I was repairing the burnt out rehostat plug connections on my 307 HDI. It was 30 amps. Close to half a horsepower.

Nearly jumped out of my hands so watch your fingers....

I've had this car for a couple of months now, however recently the dashboard has the "Low Oil Pressure" light flickering on and off. It only flickers on when the car is in low revs or idle... and occasionally at 30mph, only very occasionally however. When the low oil pressure light is on there is a very peculiar sound in the engine, not a drilling, but more similar to a very hollow yet damp rattle... (if that makes sense, it sounds more like a Diesel Engine instead of my normal petrol engine, sounds horrible though when i rev it and the noise doesn't go), however, give it a couple of revs and the sound will disappear and it will sound perfectly normal again....

The light only comes on at idle, the oil level is fine.... I've been told the issue may be a sensor, which is causing the engine to restrict certain activity? However I'm not really sure... The light comes on more frequently when the engine is cold, when warmer it comes on less, but not by much at all really... ... Read more

you'll need an oil pump kit that used to be about £50, and probably one set of piston rings, about £30.

My C4 Grand Picasso has rear air suspension. Three years ago, when the car was 3 years old with 33k on the clock, both units failed (left, then right) within the space of 200miles. Now, with the car just past its 6th birthday and with 66k on the clock, I found it this morning on its back haunches again ....it had sunk overnight. It's not a total failure (yet) - 3 years ago, when each suspension unit failed, the car would not get off the bump stops; this time, when I switch on, it pumps itself up and drives as normal - then when I switch off and leave it for a couple of hours, it's down again. So it seems I'm getting an early warning this time.... Read more

Citroen C4 rear suspension fau

Regards your problems with C4 rear suspension, mine has been playing up on my 59 plate exclusive and main agent confirmed problem and said Citroen couldn't help as I didn't have full main agent service history and quoted little under £500. Bought the bits on eBay for 90 pounds and friend fitted them for 30pounds, if you can get the rear on stands you don't even have to take the wheels off and takes half hour . The bits are pattern but quality , problem sorted for 120quid,joe

The fuel pressure regulator sensor failed (P1089 & P0087) on my 1.5dci Qashqai. The garage couldn’t buy the sensor on its own so had to replace the whole pump (£1510 inc labour). Since then the car has been back to the garage three times. They do something and it’s all OK for about a week.... Read more

I bought a car from ford its 6mths old 4 weeks ago the clutch went I thought the problem would be covered under my warrenty I am having problems with Ford who say its down to my driving but this is the 5th car I have bought from them I always take my car for regular service especially in winter checks. They say they have not heard this from other people that ford have refussed to carry out the repair. I have alwayed been a good driver I don't know about mechanics this happened without warning I had passengers in the car when it happened so I would not put them at risk.

Has this happened to anyone else with ford clutch issues. This has been very distressing If anyone has any legal advise would love to hear from you also. Read more
