Some advice would be very helpful.I'm agonising (I'm indecisive) between a 99bhp and a 130bhp, the reviews I've read suggest that the difference is quite substantial. I'm going to be doing some long distance motorway driving, and I do enjoy a car with a good bit of poke.

However, my budget is super tight and the I'm struggling to find a 2003/2004 130bhp 1.9 diesel model for under £2,500, and am about to opt for the 99bhp model which seems to be much cheaper.... Read more

Back in the day, my dad had a Passat 1.9TDI 100.

On the many occasions we had 4 in the car plus luggage, it was fine performance wise....

Hi all,

Well following on from my last post (www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=99310), I am looking at 2.2L dCi from around 2003-2005. I tested one the other day and apart from driving fine and being a really nice example, there was a whining noise from the engine.... Read more

Thanks everyone for all your help and info. I decided on a 2006 2.2 dCi so now part of the X-Trail gang. Fingers crossed!

Hi everybody I know the illegally parked Vans is always a popular topic however in my estate which is a neew build the deeds state no vans to be parked in public parking, basically our estate is one big long street with house on one side a park accross the other every 50 years there are parking spaces for 2 or 3 cars now there are people parking there vans in them i would mind so much but they have drive ways but the property deeds clearly state no vans to be park in public parks what can i do?? ive approached the offenders which is hard enough and they were not interested what would be the next avenue? you advice is greatly appreciated Read more

I have lived 12 years on a 100+ house estate which, while large, has no thru traffic. Nobody is incovenienced by the parking of caravans and large white vans; we can all get around the estate, people have to live and make a living so none of us can really be bothered with the enforcement of an archaic and largely irrelevant covenant. Not the situation for some other estates I appreciate

Hi Everyone,

I have just bought a 1.1 xl independence but the clutch biting point is right at the top of the travel.

It isn't slipping yet, and the car stalls in 3rd with the hand break on.
Am I right in thinking , it's days are numbered...maybe a couple of thousand miles?
(The clutch feels normal, and there is no clunking or grating etc)

I have added an inch of washers to the clutch cable, in the hope something would change...it didn't
and removed one of the original washer...again , no change in clutch biting position.
(I didn't realise it was an automatic adjust cable at that point :) )

Does anyone know how an auto adjust cable works?... is it the cable that adjusts..via something like a spring?

Is a very high bite point defintely a sign of the clutch definitely being on the way out?

Any info would be welcome...
Thanks

Shorlty getting a C Class CDI220 (2006) and been advised to use 'branded' fuels such as Shell, and not to use supermarket fuels as they give lower mpg and sometimes poorer performance.

Has anybody else experienced this? Read more

branded diesel doesnt give my car anymore MPG but it definatly makes the engine sound smoother. For the most part I use premium fuel (vpower, ultimate or excellium), for me it usually costs £2 extra a tank, and they suppose to have beetter cleaning/ additive agents than their regular stuff.

As I have a DPF i read that the Vpower and Ultimae burns abit cleaner being part synthetic....

Hi, I could do with some expert help please. My focus tdci has caught this common intermittent problem but searching through the forums and been to a few garages nobody can diagnose the issue. The mpg has fallen badly, losiing around 80 miles per full tank.

I have had it on the diagnostics and no fault codes are showing. It has been regularly serviced with a new fuel filter only 4k miles ago. Last year all 4 injectors went and they were replaced along with an egr valve and maf sensor.... Read more

Is it possible the variable turbo vanes are sticking, which gives an overboost condition and could be putting the ECU into limp-home mode? This happens with the VW 1.9 TDI and is accompanied by a sudden loss of power after driving with high boost.

If so, there are various turbo cleaning products available like Revive or Innotec which might be worth a try, though since they need to be fed directly into the turbo it's probably a garage job. ...

Hi,

I have just bought a 2005 Ford Mondeo LX TDCI 130bph. On the steering wheel there are controls for cruise control, the chap that sold me the car told me that it doesn't have CC but ford just put those steering wheels on all cars to save making several different ones.... Read more

How often do my discs and drums need replacing on my Citroen C3? A brake check at Kwik Fit on Saturday revealled that I need both replacing. They were both replaced by Kwik Fit in 2008 following a service and MOT. In the meantime I have done 40K miles, mainly on the motorway. However I have just moved to the country, don't go above 50 and use my brakes much more often!

As I am a single girl, I just want to try and make sure that Kwik Fit aren't trying to pull a fast one! Read more

"If you are not getting any vibration from front or rear under braking you dont seem to need new discs"

Not true you should learn a little bit more about discs before you make incorrect statements that could result in danger if your advice was followed.

I have a 2003 focus 1.8TDCi. I had the misfortune of having the Serpetine belt breaking on me. Fortunely i was on my way home and in daylight hours. I only had to wrestle with the steering, how did we ever manage without pwer steering .

Now the problem is i cannot get the bottom pully off the engine. When i removed the old belt which had bits wound round the pully's, I found that i had a lot of oil around the bottom driven pully.... Read more

Thanks guys, I have found out that on the front face of the pully there are four dimples on it for positioning of a tool that you can use to hold against the crank pully while I use suitable socket and breaker bar to reverse the bolt.

I was advised to double check that the car was secure as it would take quite a bit of force to crack the bolt free. (being on the large side came in useful.)...
