Rac came out said crankshaft sensor. Removed and checked resistence should be 399 ohms, getting 388 which is not too far away cleaned clutch dust fom it & replaced it engine still not starting.Fuel pump runs whe ignition switched on, but no spark at plugs. No voltage at coil low voltage pin 2 when cranking.

Could this still be crankshaft sensor?... Read more

Did the RAC person check the battery ?
How did they conclude it was the crankshaft sensor ?

I am looking for a definitive answer for the poor fuel consumption of the 2.2 engine, I know I am not alone with this problem but most references are to the poor consumption rather than a cure for it.

I have 2.0. Hdi engines in another C5 and a 406 both of which with my very gentle style of driving will exceed 60 mpg, the best I consumption I have had form the 2.2 was 49 mpg at a steady 60 mph on the motorway but it only averages about 40 mpg or less. I have cleaned the EGR and MAF to no effect and even fitted a tuning box in an attempt to increase mpg, it didn't, did increase the performance markedly though, but I'm not interested in that, I drive mostly at no more than 60 mph or 2000 rpm.... See this simple fix, (for a Volvo) on youTube. It is something I will consider if I keep my Volvo at the end of its lease, (around 100k miles).

Car starts perfect even in sub zero tempratures after about 1 mile gets lumpy and prone to cutting out will only restart using cold start. Fault codes say open circut on 1 & 3 Glow Plugs But as stated starts first time every morning , RAC & independant Garage say not Glow Plugs went to VW they find same fault codes and say they have to change Glow PlugsThree weeks and £244 later same fault now going back to VW for further investigation. I understand there was a recall on injectors on erlier models. Any recorded problems with later models

GordonK, stick with that small indy you've found, sounds like a perfect logical approach to fault finding.

Compare with main dealer's approach of we'll throw (chargeable) new parts at it till we happen upon a fix, this seems to be on the increase and you're little indy one of a vanishing breed.

Hi All,

When just lightly applying the brakes I experience a sort of judder. Imagine how it feels when something is catching, its that type of problem, I get it worse at high speed but its also noticeable when crawling along with the brakes lightly applied. I have brand new O.E discs and pads all round (back brakes only fitted yesterday) so I'm certain its not a warped disc. ... Read more

I have had and seen a lot of problems with so called OE discs warping, for a time I went back to nothing but genuine but recently I have dipped a toe in the Pagid pool to see what happens. Dirty and corroded wheel bearing hubs can cause new discs to warp but it has been a problem even on cars where they have been fitted fastidiously.

Hello!

I'm thinking of buying a 2009 Ford Focus 1.6 petrol TI-VCT. A few days ago I got the chance to ride in a friend's 2007 Focus (pre facelift). I was very surprised by the sheer amount of tyre/wind noise that occured at speeds no higher than 55 miles/hour. I read here on the forums that the facelift version has improved the soundproofing. Can please someone tell me how it compares to the previous model in this regard? Or maybe someone who owns a Focus 2 facelift can share his impressions on the quietness of the car?... Read more

even though they aren't as new as the focus. As refinement and quietness go, I understand that they are better than a 2009 focus?Thank you again for your help, I really appreciate it.

Yes, definitely.

Having driven all three (and my preference is for a good ride, low noise levels as long as it's still reasonable fun) I can honestly say that the previous Astra and Golf were more refined that the post 08 Focus. On the other hand the previous Astra was dull and bland inside. It's all down to personal preference....

My mother bought a Corsa 1.4 2009 about a year ago, it is a 1.4 automatic which I believe is a 4 speed. The car has around 15K miles on it but the gearbox has issues. Sometimes the gearbox will just not move out of the Park position. It has been to a dealer whom suggested she give it more time for the electronics to do their stuff before putting into Drive. She did this and it was fine for a while but the fault then started to occur more often no matter how long she waited. Now sometimes when the car is put into gear it also will not move. These faults clear when the car the engine is stopped then re-started. I suggested that she gets rid of it before something major happens to the gearbox and if it is electrical how much would it cost for a dealer to find it as my experience of our local Vauxhall dealer has been poor to say the least. I just wondered if anybody had any experience of this model? And has any idea what might be causing the issue. Or is she better just cutting her losses and getting another car from a different manufacturer. Her previous car a Focus Mk 1 Auto which she gave to me is a way better car that has never had any issues with the gearbox. It seems that the more electronics they add the more troublesome they can be and the harder they are to fix.

Hi there did you get any help or even find out what the problem was????

beanstalker

This problem only crops up occasionally; 4 or 5 times in 20 months, usually in winter. The rev counter drops to 500 rpm when I stop; then it barely ticks over, obviously struggling. Or, the engine will die on me completely when I stop. I have had a new air cleaner and new spark plugs fitted but the problem is still there. I use Quantum 5/3O engine oil, this viscosity was particularly recommended by Vauxhall technical when I contacted them. The problem always goes away after I take the car on the nearby motorway and drive at 60/65 mph for a few miles. Afterwards, the stalling has completely gone and the tickover has returned to the normal 750/800 rpm. I would have expected such things from a highly tuned engine but mine is a " cooking" engined 1.2 Life with no modifications. I do some long journeys and some urban driving. Have other Corsa drivers experienced this particular situation? Any tips will be much appreciated.

As these problem only seems to occur in cold weather,it is possible that the engine coolant temp sensor is erratic. You will need to plug in some diag equipt to get actual data from cold. Also make sure the throttle flap is clean .There is no maf sensor on these. The fuel filter is a sealed for life type that requires fuel tank removal for replacement.hth

Any thoughts from those familiar with many different models? I've always found Fords with small engines warm up in no time. My 2.8 Audi is useless at warming the cabin until at least 5 miles. Car testers provide data on all sorts of things but never how quickly the heater works. Why not? This would be a major consideration for me with my next car.

I appreciate a really good heater probably indicates an inefficient engine which wastes heat, but for most of the year north of the 50th parallel this is a bonus!... Read more

An S-Type has quite a big grille......

Good Morning, I am crying our for some help and advice......

I bought my Mondeo about 12 months ago from a car dealer. for the first 3 months we had no issues at all,. but then all of a sudden we would find the glow plug light flashing, and no turbo, after looking through all the forums, decided i would clean the egr valve, which was gunked.

I finally took it back to the dealer to have a look at, who said he cleaned the turbo. the car was ok for a few days and then the same fault's, I continued to drive the car for a while whilst i did more research and found some pennies to resolve the issue. all of a sudden the errors cleared from the dashboard.

We then noticed a lack of drive, although we had turbo wit was very sluggish, after investigating i found the intercooler plpe split, last saturday i replaced the turbo pipe to find a big 8 inch split in the pipe. The car had run absolutley fantastic for 2 days, then i used the car for the school run to fin the EML andf the glow plug light flashing again?

I have tried to explain the best i can, as i understand it cant be the turbo as it worked fine for 2 days when i had the pipe fixed.

Question is what is it and will it fail the MOT i have in 15 days with the 2 lights showing on the dash?

HELP!!!!!! Just an edit to this additional post,

When the engine is first started, the Glow plug light is off then if i rev to 2k the light starts flashing.? not sure whether this has any significance

Thats now way to test it you need a a proper injection turbo company to check it properly ,if you place your fingur on the actuator arm and press in the direction that it moves you can sometimes simulate its correct movement but not always.

The actuator and turbo are bought as one piece very expensive from Ford or Jaguar If you do need to buy one they are around 675 plus vat in the UK if you shop around around 2grand from Ford. Its a Garet turbo and I thing its a Mernello actuator.
