2007 Vauxhall Corsa - lumpy tickover.stalling - beanstalker

This problem only crops up occasionally; 4 or 5 times in 20 months, usually in winter. The rev counter drops to 500 rpm when I stop; then it barely ticks over, obviously struggling. Or, the engine will die on me completely when I stop. I have had a new air cleaner and new spark plugs fitted but the problem is still there. I use Quantum 5/3O engine oil, this viscosity was particularly recommended by Vauxhall technical when I contacted them. The problem always goes away after I take the car on the nearby motorway and drive at 60/65 mph for a few miles. Afterwards, the stalling has completely gone and the tickover has returned to the normal 750/800 rpm. I would have expected such things from a highly tuned engine but mine is a " cooking" engined 1.2 Life with no modifications. I do some long journeys and some urban driving. Have other Corsa drivers experienced this particular situation? Any tips will be much appreciated.

It could be a lot of things and rather than throw money at it you'd be better off investing in an op-com off ebay so you can get some codes, which will point you in the right direction.

First off change the fuel filter. It's a fairly new car but I'd still check the battery and alternator. Then think about checking if the breathers are clear and cleanibg the EGR, and having a very careful look at the MAF. Check connections are secure downstream of the MAF. Other than that without codes it's pure guesswork and intuition.

I'd say the small light engines are probably the most highly tuned to get the best combination of performance and economy, which unfortunately makes them the least forgiving of poor maintenance.

As these problem only seems to occur in cold weather,it is possible that the engine coolant temp sensor is erratic. You will need to plug in some diag equipt to get actual data from cold. Also make sure the throttle flap is clean .There is no maf sensor on these. The fuel filter is a sealed for life type that requires fuel tank removal for replacement.hth
