I ran a 2001 BMW 530i from new for 12 years and 155k - just brilliant. I had to replace it this year so bought a 2012 (62 plate) 520d. It's almost as good as the previous car save in a number of respects which I think are all tyre related - it doesn't ride or corner so well, there is less road 'feel' and a considerable amount of road noise. Adjusting between Comfort and Sports settings doe snot help overmuch.

The car is fitted with Michelin Primacy run flats - 245 (275)/40 (35)/R19s front (rear).... Read more

Agreed his is a specialised car but most insurance companies will ony insure the car if you use wheels and tyre size listed in the car manual not telling them is one way but if you have an accident the loss assessor normaly checks as a matter of course the wheel and tyre size.

As I said in my post above I informed Aviva about my change to non runflat Winter tyres on 16" instead of the standard 17" wheels and there was no charge. There was also no charge for using non run flat 17" tyres for the remainder of the year. Both the 16" and 17" sizes were as listed in the manual....

Can please someone suggest how to gain entry into a Sirocco after putting her lap top into the boot and shutting it, the locking system is not responding to the remote at all.

Unfortunately there are no key slots on any of the doors or boot to gain entry. Help would be appreciated. Read more

Wondering if anyone else has had this issue in the past....

Half way home yesterday I noticed that my indicators (all including hazards) had stopped working, not only the external lights but also the interior lights on the dash board, after pulling over to mess about with them I called a friend who advised it may just be a fuse, after changing the fuse yesterday they worked fine, but this morning half way to work I noticed they have started doing the same thing, sometimes they'll flash a few times then stop and sometimes not at all, I've been told this may be an issue with the "Relay?" if this is the case I'm sure I can manage to find a new relay in a local store but I've no idea where I can find this relay in my car, so. . ... The fault is within the hazard switch. This stops the indicators working also.If you cycle the hazard switch in and out a few times, this often sorts the problem. If not replace switch.hth

My wife's 2009 Mini Cooper Convertible has developed a fault - a broken roof tensioner retaining clip. I have found similar problem on a USA forum but nothing in the UK. I can't believe we are the only owner with this problem. No surprise BMW want to replace the whole roof at £2,000. However without any suggestion from me the dealer has offered to pay half the parts cost plus labour which is still £1,200 pretty shocking for a low mileage 4 year old car. Anyone else got this problem? Bob Dee Read more

As I am sure you know Rob, there is no "liability on a car manufacturer" in any shape or form, unless they sold the car direct to the customer- which is extremely unlikely.

The 6 year limit is the time limit for an action in a county court before a claim for breach of contract is time barred..

I purchased a 1.3 CDTi Vauxhall Corsa Ecoflex Active in September 2012 and have had nothing but trouble with it. It is currently in the garage following stalling to a stop on the dual carriageway and required to be towed to the dealership garage. it has currently been in for 5weeks now and they are apparently waiting for a new catalytic converter as a result of the DPF hose blowing and tearing. This is it's 5th time in the garage and I would like some advice of why this may have happened to a car which is just turning 1 year old and only completed 8600miles on the clock. I am well aware of the DPF issues and have been driving it as recommened (once a week for 25mins in 4th gear over 3000rpm) following a full service after 4months and the car only completing 3600 miles due to the engine management function stalling the engine. The sales manager very helpfully informed me that I shouldn't have bought a diesel, although this was never mentioned at the point of sale by the salesmans!!! This issue has been ongoing now for the past year and I have lost all confidence in this car, but unfortunately am tied into a HP agreement. Do I have any legal ground to return the car as 5 times in the garage surely means the car is not reliable and fit for purpose?
Would the recommended weekly trips have caused my DPF hose to blow? Also, if this is correct why have Vauxhall build in a feature where the car is alerting you to change gear? Even when I do take the car for these weekly journeys, less that 12hours later and the DPF regeneration warning light is on again. Is there a fault with my car or is everyone having these issues. I would be very grateful for any advice or support in dealing with this issue. Many thanks

Hi, im new so hope someody can help.
I have a jaguar 2.2D 62 reg which has just had its 1st service on 12,000 miles.

On Saturday i was driving and the car lost all power, sterring and breaking and a warning came on the dashboard, something about restricted power. At the time i was doing 70 mph on a dual carrigage way, very scary. I rang Jaguar and they sent out an AA van. The technician came but couldnt find anything wrong, reset the warning light and told me just to be careful. I drove for another 45mins fine then it went again on the M62 doing 75mph, very very scary as i was overtaking a wagon at the time. I managed to get the car to the hard shoulder and turned it off and took some deep breathes. I decided that i wasnt sitting on the hard shoulder and made it to Manchester as it was only 10 more miles. Parked the car for the night and following day. Went to the car on Monday and it drove fine for 3 hours then went again. But i made it home back to the North East. Rang Jaguar breakdown again and the sent a technician out, not AA. He hooked it up to his computer and told me the fuel filter was blocked and that it was a common fault in my area and blamed the fuel in the North East ??.

I took it in this morning to my local Jaguar dealership (Stratstone). I had a chat with the service manager. He said it was a known problem and Jaguar were aware of it and were working on a fix, but, at the moment there is no permanent fix other than to change the fuel filet regularly. Ive thought about it all day to be honest and rang my insurance. I wanted to know how i stood driving a car that had a known manufactors fault that at some point the car will loose power, sterring and brakes and could quite easily cause an accident. The insurance guy said that it would be a very grey area as it would be down to me to keep it in a road worthy state. He stated that each accident would be treated on there own merit. Hmmm so am i covered or not??

Anyway, when Stratstone rang to say that the car was ready for collection as the fuel filter had been changed i told them i didnt feel safe driving a car with known issues. He rang me back, Jaguar have now offered me next years service free of charge and if i dont take the hire car back that i would be charged for it as the Jaguar is ready for collection.

I feel less that safe in the car now having 2 near accidents.Let down by the AA for a less than helpful, just turn the light of breakdown service. I feel let down by Jaguar for letting me take the car with a known problem. Im not sure how to feel about the conversation with the insurance company. I feel Jaguar are trying to palm safety of on a "good will service" next year.

Am i being over cautious? Is there a "known" problem if the North East with diesel, or is it a Jaguar problem?

Any advice really welcome.

"The alternator packed up and the power loss as the battery drained was almost instant."

In the old days if the dynamo or alternator gave up, you could at least get home as long as you didn't have all the gadgets on. Maybe one of our tech experts could enlighten me as to why we now have instant power loss?

A question for the Backroom plumbers (if there are any).

We have a cold water tank in the loft and it's been making a bit of a noise filling up. Yesterday, I took a look to see if the ballvalve was operating correctly and found that whilst it was shutting off cleanly, it had a small hole in the side of the casting resulting in a fine spray when it was filling. Down to Wickes for a high pressure Part 1 replacement. Fitting went smoothly.... Read more

My almost new Q7 has picked up a nail in the rear drivers side tyre. I have been advise by Audi that we must replace all four tyres as the 4x4 system will not function correctly with one of tyre treads having a different depth to the other three. The cost, a mighty twelve hundred pounds! Is this the most expensive puncture on record? Lets hope this very sensitive motor never has to go off road! Read more

My wifes Ka broke down and the RAC guy told me it was the alternator - so had the alternator changed. Started the car after changing alternator and gave it a good drive to try to charge the battery back up, but as soon as I stopped and tried starting the engine again - NOTHING!

I've tried charging the battery at home but it loks like the battery has gone down in charge! Could it have been the battery all along?... Read more

Hi

It is my understanding that once a car battery has gone really flat it is damaged and unrecoverable. Perhaps this happened following your alternator failure?...
