Hi all, this quite a long story but will keep it short as possible.

I bought this vehicle from Ford direct in April 2011, Ford dealership gave the vehicle its first service before I took delivery, it has since been serviced by independent garages, the vehicle has been great til May this year when the automatic gearbox intermittently started to slip on pulling away from junctions and sometimes at high speeds as it changed up. I took the vehicle back to Ford dealership and said to them that this fault is intermittent but they said they would take a look. Ford dealership road tested and checked electrical systems but 'no faults found' was all they could tell me. I returned vehicle again a week or 2 later with same problems and they said Ford Technical told them to change gearbox oil and filter (£205.00) as it was coming up to 3 yrs old (July 16th). Vehicle taken but fault returns a couple of weeks later, go back to Ford dealership who say Ford Technical told them to do a gearbox 'software update'. Vehicle taken again but fault returns after warranty expires (July 16th). I take the car back to Ford dealership and they take another look and get back in touch with Ford Technical. I was told that the fault lies within the control unit of the gearbox but Ford have said they will not cover costs because vehicle out of warranty. Dealership says they can replace this unit for £1400 less10% 'goodwill'. The gearbox had done 19,000 miles when I first took it to them. Do I have a leg to stand on here? I have spoken to independent transmission rebuilders and they were amazed that Ford Technical didn't know about issues with these getrag gearboxes as they been replacing the control units and the dual clutch systems for some time, Dekz43.... I agree that Ford are liable, however i wouldn't be holding me breath waiting for them to deal with the problem honourably or voluntarily, you might have to be prepared to get nasty and legal to get any positive response.

My car hazard lights randomly flash, the alarm keeps going off and the central locking/windows sometimes don't work. The CCM has been changed, along with the hazard switch, the boot catch and the siren disconnected. I remove fuse 14 overnight and, if the weather is dry, it can be replaced about lunchtime and all will be OK! I have visually checked all the wiring in the seals/rear washer etc and wondered if anyone else has had a similar problem. Thank you. Read more

Glad to hear your determination has paid off. I think many would have given up! :)

Some modern cars have little if any soundproofing under the thin plastic trim, or under the very thin boot coverings.

Road noise can be awful in some and thats without the cars in question being fitted with elastic band tyres.... Read more

It seems the weather stayed good for you then GB.

Yes, a little windy but otherwise all went well thanks....

Advice please! - Am in France and need knowledge/info before a garage 'has me by the curlies...' and takes me to the cleaners! Does anyone have any experience of this?

Driving normally, slowing and got a judder (I thought I was too slow for still being in 5th gear), immediately depressed clutch (and engine stalled), changed gear and expected to 'bump re-start' car while still driving - but I had no clutch engagement.
Restarted car with key, could depress clutch normally (completely normal 'feel' on clutch pedal, could select all gears and neutral), -- but only the most minimal torsion from clutch - just enough to move car slowly (trying to find place to stop/park!) - and soon there was no friction/torsion at all.

This is totally different from a 'normal' slipping clutch: sudden onset from symptom-free, no warning of anything wrong - and I am always gentle on the clutch, to get longer life...

Car is Citroen Xsara Picasso, 1.6 TDi, 2004, 75k miles.
My own thoughts:
- Possible pressure plate sudden failure? (is it possible? but no previous symptoms...)
- Slipping of friction material? (rivets gone - but no previous noises or vibrations... or if bonded, failure of bond) - but wouldn't that give a burning smell? (no smell, no smoke, nothing...)
- is a broken shaft or anything possible?? (but no abnormal noises, grinds etc...)
- or diff or gearbox? (front wheel drive)

Tomorrow (Monday) I hope to recover the car but should ideally get it delivered to a garage.. and that is the problem. Once there - I will have no way of moving it again to get another quote... so I must do my 'homework' and telephoning first...

Would VERY much appreciate any constructive diagnostic help, to keep bills down!! Thanks :)

Hi I also have the exact same problem with a xsara Picasso 1.6 hdi I have replaced the dual mass flywheel and have fitted a new clutch that was supplied with the car it looked identical to the one I took off, when I tightened the pressure plate up fully I was still able to move the clutch plate any ideas anyone all info is showing this gearbox as a be4r box but when I described the box to a gearbox specialist he told me they call that type of box a DA box and that they are bad for the planetary gears failing and tho can give the same symptom's as described above the clutch plate shouldn,t move when fully tightened kin of stumped here I checked the serial number of the supplied clutch and its for a be4r box so there shouldn't be a problem with it mating with the flywheel I bought which is also for a be4r box

I bought a second hand car at the end of July, dealer told me it was MOTd til April and taxed til december when I viewed the car. I checked online and saw that it was, indeed taxed. Agreed the sale and waited for guy to deliver and collect my old car... He turned up, we did paperwork, I paid... THEN he said it was no longer taxed as previous owner cashed it in! After a while he agreed to go and tax it as it was no good to me untaxed.

What I didn't realise was that he'd filled his own details out on the green slip and not mine, presumably to tax it. My fault for not checking I know. The problem is that I am still waiting for the new V5C to arrive, and he is still waiting for his money for the tax (which I won't pay until I have the documents for my car!). What can I do about this as technically, the car is in his name!! I have a receipt, with the registration of the car on it, to prove I have paid for it (it says paid in full) but I can't send off the green slip as it's not in my name!... Read more

In any case Log book/V5 has nothing to do with who is the legal owner of the car. V5 simply records the registered keeper which is often someone different, especially for company cars and so on (although some companies register it in their name or indeed another related company). If you have a receipt you have proof the car belongs to you, so ownership is not an issue.

So then the only issue is whether another owner will show up on the new V5 between you and the last non trade owner, as this could reduce its resale value. Thats certainly something worth fighting but its not a risk of the police taking the car off you etc if you have proof of ownership. And so on....

Have you spoken to Ford (or a Ford dealer, and asked them to speak to Ford GB) and found out cost, and if any 'goodwill' would be forthcoming ? Do you have a full Ford service history ? What sort of mileage on your car ?

All cases are different. The devil is in the details.

have you looked at the injectors, if one or more are defective the ecu will will pull off the power slightly to protect the engine , get someone to put a diagnostic machine onto your car, this might be cheaper for you in the end

Hi,

I bought my Vauxhall Astra in 2010 and have a Lifetime Warranty on it. On 22nd July this year, I took it for its annual service and reactivation check. It was recorded on the report that I needed two tyres replacing and that the front pads had 20% of the lining worn and that the rear pads had 40% of the lining worn. At the time of the service, the mileage was 13962.... Read more

My Chevrolet Cruze, (2011) same mechanicals as the current astra had the same problem this week, noticed that slight grinding noise pulling away, so booked it in at Kwick-fit where the manager was previously a good mate at National tyres, so showed me near side outer pad worn to the metal, (car serviced by Chevrolet 6 months ago) Happily no damage to disc, but handbrake mechanism sticking a bit, so cleaned and libricated as required and new pads fitted on rear, front calipers taken off and cleaned/lubricated as well. all caiper pistons compressed and checked too.

mechanics forbidden to use air wrenches so all work done properly and inspected. Torqued up correctly. well done Kwik-fit Carmarthen....

Absolutely agree with the above ,I would say its impossible for a low volume trader or a private buyer to buy a car from BCA etc at a sensible price .

I would advice buying from a smaller independent auction ,that doesn't charge the ludicrous add ons . Or alternatively buy from e bays auctions ,the advantage with e bay is you can inspect and test drive the cars ,check the service history and do the bidding from your armchair . A much better prospect than a freezing cold auction hall .

Hi,
My timing belt has just snapped ... I was tootling along about 2000 rpm

Will I do any more damage, if I put a new belt on and turn it over to see if it starts?
(I kinda need it for work asap)

...or is it head off, and have a look at the damage before attempting anything?

I'm guessing it'll require a new engine top bit
(above the cylinders, where the valves are)

Any advice would be appreciated, as I am hoping to get on with it 2mrw

ps for the last few days,
something was making a kinda quiet whistling noise which got louder when the revs increased... it kinda sounded like a turbo. I guessed it was the alternator belt... mebbe not?

I have turned the tensioner and the water pump by hand and they seem fine ,
but these pics show dry crud around the water pump...

Do you reckon I'll need a new one of those too?...

(I have the timing belt , and can post pics if it sheds any light on anything )

Thanks
