peugeot 106 1.1 xn petrol 1997 - Timing belt snapped - liammcl

Hi,
My timing belt has just snapped ... I was tootling along about 2000 rpm

Will I do any more damage, if I put a new belt on and turn it over to see if it starts?
(I kinda need it for work asap)

...or is it head off, and have a look at the damage before attempting anything?

I'm guessing it'll require a new engine top bit
(above the cylinders, where the valves are)

Any advice would be appreciated, as I am hoping to get on with it 2mrw

ps for the last few days,
something was making a kinda quiet whistling noise which got louder when the revs increased... it kinda sounded like a turbo. I guessed it was the alternator belt... mebbe not?

I have turned the tensioner and the water pump by hand and they seem fine ,
but these pics show dry crud around the water pump...

Do you reckon I'll need a new one of those too?...

(I have the timing belt , and can post pics if it sheds any light on anything )

Thanks
Liam

It is an interference engine so more than likely you have bent some valves.

You could try putting the belt on and turning over by hand but this wont prove much, you will need to do a compression test to confirm.

Thanks Dimebag,
I have a compression tester,
so the plan is to turn over by hand,
and then do a dry test...

Fingers crossed...I am away to get the belt in 2 mins

usually its better to put a belt kit on it and water pump too but in this situation id just try the belt first.

Thank you Dimebag
I've just got in and I'm reading up Haynes atm

I seem to remember it was only last week you was changing valve guide seals, Maybe something has happened up the top end and jammed the camshaft causing the belt to break?

Take the cam cover off and have a look!

peugeot 106 1.1 xn petrol 1997 - Timing belt snapped - liammcl

lol Wackyracer :)
This is another car... the one I did the work on, is perfect so far.. runs perfect, but needs some work dpoing for the re-MOT

The one with the problem, is my new car, I've only had it 6 weeks !

Well, I am up to speeed with Haynes.... and off I go, spanner in hand , to do some damage :)

Cheers

peugeot 106 1.1 xn petrol 1997 - Timing belt snapped - liammcl

Alas, all is not as it should be...
1,2,4 are 150psi
no 3 is zero !

i103.photobucket.com/albums/m147/liammcl_2006/liam...g

Looks like I'll have to take the top off to see the damage?

Lets hope it's a valve rathger than the piston!

On a positive note,
I've never done a timing belt before... It was quite easy

Whether it's done right of course, is another matter ;)

Cheers

Not a bad job to do on this engine if it is head off time and you intend to keep it.

peugeot 106 1.1 xn petrol 1997 - Timing belt snapped - liammcl

Thanks Dimebag,

It all went without any issues today...

Here's it atm
(I didn't have to disconnect the fuel pipes etc , doing it this way)
i103.photobucket.com/albums/m147/liammcl_2006/Head...g

and here are the 2 valves
the exhaust one (smaller looks wonky)
i103.photobucket.com/albums/m147/liammcl_2006/Head...g

I can see a little damage down the bottom right of 3... like a nick
i103.photobucket.com/albums/m147/liammcl_2006/Head...g

and damage to the exhaust valve (small)
i103.photobucket.com/albums/m147/liammcl_2006/Head...g

Strange thing is , there is a chunk missing on Cylinder 1 too
(up top left)
but the compression was fine..?!?
i103.photobucket.com/albums/m147/liammcl_2006/Head...g

I'll get an outlet 2mrw
www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Peugeot_106_1.1_1997/p/...4

Is there any thing else I need to do with reseating the valves etc?
...I'm off a'googlin it atm

I am wondering if I could reuse the head bolts and head gasket...?

I imagine I'll use the old ones to check if all is ok with the compression ,
and to confirm that there are no other nasties waiting to pounce.

If all is ok, I'd buy some new bolts and a head gasket (£25 for both)
and redo them.

Tho' I am wondering.... if , in the real wolrd,
back street garages re-use the bolts and head gaskets to keep the price down..?

I am wondering if I could reuse the head bolts and head gasket...?

No expert, but won't this Pug engine use stretch bolts which should be replaced? Was the belt change overdue, or don't you know?

peugeot 106 1.1 xn petrol 1997 - Timing belt snapped - liammcl

Dunno, Andrew-T
I have only have had it 6 weeks, I bought it from a trader...
£450 with 12 mths MOT and 55,000
...seemed like a bargain !

I am just trying the old bolts and head gasket to see what happens...

peugeot 106 1.1 xn petrol 1997 - Timing belt snapped - liammcl

Well, here's the progress today...

(btw I'm using the existing water pump, tensioner, old headgasket and old bolts...)

I went to europarts at 11am to get the exhaust valve
but they didn't have it in, so they ordered it , ready for 1pm.
Went back at 1pm, drove home, just about to put it in the engine ,
but when I compared it against the old valve... it was a different size !

The one furthest right, was supposed to be the same as the middle one
i103.photobucket.com/albums/m147/liammcl_2006/2013...g

Back to the shop & swapped it for the right one,
which they had in stock all the time....3 1/2 hrs wasted.
(Looking at the invoice, afterwards, it actually says it was for a Fiat !)

The £10 (delivered) spring compressor from Ebay , was very easy to use
i103.photobucket.com/albums/m147/liammcl_2006/2013...g

Shiny happy people :)
i103.photobucket.com/albums/m147/liammcl_2006/2013...g

Now that's what I call a proper wrench ...it impresses the neighbours ;)
i103.photobucket.com/albums/m147/liammcl_2006/2013...g

did a compression test...all good
s103.photobucket.com/user/liammcl_2006/media/2013-...1

All back on
i103.photobucket.com/albums/m147/liammcl_2006/2013...g

I'm not sure if it is pressurising the water...time will tell
Just got in from a 40 mile journey...it all seems ok

The thing I'm not sure of, is how tight , to tighten the tensioner...
I couldn't get a torque wrench in the gap...so I guestimated....not a clue, tbh

I'm packing my racer, a rucksack , and lots of water....just in case !
(I need it for work...and if it croaks, I can use the racer and trains to get about for the rest of the day)
i103.photobucket.com/albums/m147/liammcl_2006/2013...g

It was very easy to work on the peugeout ,
I've never doine any thing like this before...but it wasn't stressful at all.

I'm just waiting to see if it is ok, as it's my first attempt....Time will tell

Cheers
Liam
ps Where I was working,
the people were very friendly , offering cups of tea, having a chat etc
I suppose, it's not too often you see people tinkering with cars on the street anymore....

You have my admiration. You have joined a rare group of blokes. I recall my first engine strip down with just some spanners and a book and my own wits.

Well done.

Thanks DrippingSummp :)

It was thoroughly enjoyable, tbh.

I agree with Dripping Sump, Nice to see someone actually have a go at something themselves rather than just scrapping the car and going and buying another.

Nice to see the photo's too, Especially the little man drawing with the sad and happy face - Good to have a sense of humour when working on cars.

Thanks Wacky Racer :)

I've just got in from a 100 mile motorway journey,
....making the total miles 230, so far.

All seems exactly the same as it was before the snap .... no dramas at all !

I just have water in it atm,
as the different types of anti freezes, with their mixing,
needs more looking at...

I'll put some proper coolant in, in the next couple of days....

Cheers

Before you drain the water, Bung in some radiator flush, Then when you drain it flush it out with fresh water.

You will need a red antifreeze for this engine. I bought 5 litres recently for about £11 from the local factors.

peugeot 106 1.1 xn petrol 1997 - Timing belt snapped - liammcl

Thanks WackyRacer...

I'm just looking at this atm...
and wondering if I could get by with just tap water till the temp drops...

articles.chicagotribune.com/2010-08-05/classified/...t

I'll get some coolant 2mrw (payday)

ps It's done 300 miles and counting so far... all my fingers are crossed atm :)

Cheers

peugeot 106 1.1 xn petrol 1997 - Timing belt snapped - FP

Antifreeze is really a misnomer - a better term is "coolant". It contains more than just stuff to stop it freezing, the most important of which is anti-corrosion additive, which is vital where there is more than one metal in contact with the coolant. In most modern engines there will be two or three.

I suggest you get this sorted sooner rather than later.

peugeot 106 1.1 xn petrol 1997 - Timing belt snapped - liammcl

Thanks FP,
I have just this minute got back from B&Q with my coolant., ready to go...

....I'll do it 2mrw when the car is cold.

...just an update...

5,000 miles so far... nothing to report.
