Do Peugeot diesels have timing chains or belts?
I am thinking of buying a Peugeot 5008 1.5 Blue HDI with 34k on the clock but I am worried about timing chain/belt problems. Does it have a chain or belt? Does it need changing now? It can snap suddenly and stop car instantly which would cause an accident. Can I insist that car dealer change the belt/chain before I buy it?

The 1.5-litre Peugeot diesel engine uses a timing chain, which in early cars may have been problematic and was subsequently upgraded from a 7mm chain to an 8mm version. You can identify cars equipped with an 8mm chain by looking on the camcover for a reference number 98-305-804-80 - 7mm cars are indicated by 126-472. If the chain were to snap, which is unlikely at this mileage, the car would not stop suddenly. It is unlikely the dealer would be willing to change the chain on condition of sale.
