I've just come across this new buying and selling website where you can advertise any car for just ONE pound per week. I put my car on it, loaded up lots of photos and paid my pound. Got someone coming this weekend to see it :-)

Everyone who is buying or selling should try this website, rather than paying ridiculous prices elsewhere !!... Read more

I heard an advert on the radio about carquid.com and I checked out the site. I was pretty impressed. They seem to be growing rapidly and have loads of cars for sale. I hope it works for them, as I'm a car trader and I am sick to death of paying the ridiculous advertising costs that some websites charge. Good luck to them.

Can anyone help me please, my car began going into safe mode (engine revs fast but no acceleration and constant speed of 10mph max) after jet washing or driving through water a few months ago. Once the engine was turned off and allowed to reset it drove perfectly. My car has now begun to do this on every journey and has even started to bunny hop prior to dropping into safe mode. It has been into a garage whom suspected airflow problems and new unit fit, however this hasnt rectified the problem. It is a fantastic car and i wish to get it sorted but any mechanics i ask have no idea what could be causing it. Any advice greatly appreciated. Thank you :) Read more

Hiya, my bf's Espace has been running a bit rough for a couple of weeks now, sounds bad at idle and low power at low revs.

He took it into a garage yesterday and they performed a leak off test and compression test, with the diagnosis that it has low compression (150 cyl 4, 250 cyl 2+3 and 300 cyl 1).

They suggested an engine rebuild??!

Am possibly grasping at straws here, but is there any possibility it could be something less serious? I've heard of sticking piston rings - might that give similar symptoms?

Why an engine rebuild? - what's the root cause of low compression - is it cylinder head gasket, or worn piston rings, and how to tell which? It just seems a bit of a generic diagnosis and am wondering if it's possible to narrow it down a bit?

Many thanks for any replies. Read more

Regarding (diesel) compression testing, all the cylinders should have similar pressures. A material difference is an indication of a fault. Where the cylinders are worn, low compression, which gradually increases as the engine is turned, is the normal pattern. Low compression at the start of the testing, which does not build up, indicates leaking valves or a failed head gasket. If two adjacent cylinders read low, this is an indication that the head gasket has failed between them. Another issue to consider is that the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve of the 2.2Dci engine needs to be cleaned out every 18-24 months especially if shorts runs are regular. Typical symptoms of the EGR valve and surrounding area being sooted up are sluggish pulling away after stopping, accompanied by a big puff of black smoke, as power is applied and the revs are increased. Is that description familiar? I think that could be first on my action list from your report. There is also the issue of possible mis-fuelling to consider if the engine is not running smoothly!

Are you aware the forthcoming changes to the UK driving licence put three wheelers in the motor bike category? (Existing drivers are grandfathered - ie keep existing rights).

This means for new drivers, they would have to go through the tiered motorbike access route to be able to drive their parent’s Morgan, Reliant (Del boys' Reliant van included) and several other vintage types as well as the new Morgan three wheeler.

This puts a new minimum driving age of 21 for those taking the tiered access route and 24 for those taking the direct access route. As opposed to the unchanged age of 17 for cars that they were expecting.

My 1930 Morgan in theory has a maximum speed of 80mph and is about the fastest standard type. I seriously dispute a bike licence, however good, qualifies one to drive what is really a car with one fewer wheel.
The new situations regulations are summed up here:
www.nidirect.gov.uk/index/information-and-services...m

True it's the Northern Ireland version, but I think the rules across the UK are the same and the English web site only shows the current rules. The pages showing the changes having bitten the dust in the recent relaunch of many goverment pages.

A suitable outcome would be for car bodied three wheelers (the definition exists in construction and use regulation) to be declared to be cars , but it is way past any consultations.

Another way would be to give new class B (car) licence holders the same class A limited to trikes that will appear on exist class B licence holders licences when they renew. That however I'd have thought contrary to the spirit of the third European Driving Licence directive that started all this.

Note to mods - this is not a legal question but a more general statement Read more

It will also, of course, result in an increase in the number of tests for which a charges are made - another stealth tax. An European driving licence is a dubious benefit as the difference in the UK due to driving on the left is profound and should be recognised by some check in continental motorists arriving and driving in the UK as if they were at home. Or is that going to be harmonised as well?

Why - they don't check our driving if we go anywhere!

Hi All,

I wonder if anybody can help me, My wife drove our teenager back to University in Surrey today and basically parked on a road on campus with no signage or road markings, she actually parked next to another car, and when she came back from unloading my daughters things she found she had a PARKING CHARGE NOTICE from a company called town and city parking ltd and this was for obstruction, now my wife has taken photos and from what i can see she was not obstructing anyone, but i was not there and do not know enough about traffic law.
The charge is for £60 reduced to £30 if paid within 10 days, my wife is quite annoyed but ready to pay to make it go away. Although i am the registered keeper so will receive all correspondence.
I would be very grateful for any advice on how to approach this or should we just pay it
Many thanks in advance
