Sensible,Stylish coupe under £1000..is it possible - logger

Is there such a thing as a nice coupe for under £1000 that wont cost me a bomb to maintain..

I like ( SO FAR )

the MR2 (mk3 ) but early ones apparently have engine problems

the MX5 but they can rust

the Alfa Romeo GTV 2.0 but its an Alfa so maybe nuff saud about maintenance

the BMW 318 Ci but at high miles am I asking for trouble

the Hyundai Coupe ( 2002 onwards ) but again heard about engine problems

I will do less than 3000 miles a year

Any other suggestions, classic cars etc

Thanks

Hyundai Coupe stands head and shoulders above the rest in terms of expected bang for your buck. You'll still need a bit of luck to get a decent one for pocket money though!

Few people would be prepared to sell a good reliable attractive coupe for under a grand unless it was a distress or bereavement sale, why would they? so finding that elusive car will be a needle in a haystack job, unless you are prepared to take on something peculiar, starship mileage or known to have a serious drink or other problem.

Hyundai Coupe, as noted a good car unless it needs front discs which will cost you around £400 if you do the donkey work...mounted from behind hubs and all 4 bearings will collapse when pressed off so 4 x new wheel bearings.

All cars have their Achilles heel.

There's a lovely looking J reg MR2 mk2 on autotrader for £850....

The Mk2 was a great car - I had one for 2 years and it felt bomb proof. Also more practical than the mk3 as it had a decent size boot behind the engine

Ford Cougar? More of a grand tourer than a sexy little coupe but plenty going cheap now.

Ford Cougar. V6 monster for under a grand. I almost bought one last year.

Toyota Celica. Superb car.

Celica or Puma. If you look under the HJ review section both are well thought of by HJ. However, a friend owns a 2000 Puma and has had to spend £££ on bodywork rust. Rear wheel arches in particular.

Bobbin, what does Mr Bobbin think of his? Perhaps you can write a little review. :)

He loves it. He bought it 4 years ago because we wanted a second car. He said he wanted something sporty and I said 'have a look at a Celica' and he bought one. It is a prime example of Toyota reliability; nothing goes wrong. Definitely not boring though! I do enjoy driving it (not often allowed to!) He drives it to work every day. I might do a review!

That's a nice example, on that advert link.
