I wonder if someone can help with the legal aspects here. My partner had an accident in his work van last week. He's a mobile mechanic and his insurance covers him to drive all vehicles. However, he also has other private vehicles under separate insurance policies. So, the question is, does he have to declare the accident to all insurers or not? Each vehicle has its own NCB so I'm thinking that these should not be affected. After all, he is only claiming on one insurance and not all. Also, if he does have to declare to all, does he have to do it immediately or only on renewal of each policy? All advice very welcome. Read more
would recommend winter tyres - the only point of contact between your vehicle and the road - having now used winter tyres I will do so without fail every winter - have yet to hear from anyone who has used them saying they aren't worth the cost Read more
Unsure about your comment re 'if you lose grip then take foot off the gas and steer where you want to go. If you're in an understeer situation, ie you're going straight ahead when you want to go round a corner, steering where you want to go won't be very helpful. This advise is for rear wheel, oversteer skid situations.
I find this rather worrying for the makers that actually manufacture in the UK and Europe where the overheads and labour costs are considerably higher. I see also that Russia intends to introduce a low-price Lada Granta shortly. Another market to watch is Hungary where the automotive industry is the mainstay for Hungarian manufacturing. Several of the large manufacturers are already there such as Opel and Audi, however I see with interest that The Schaeffler Group who have been there since 1994 are, over the next year or so, expanding their operation which will increase their workforce by around 700. With German know-how, cheap labour costs and overheads, plus companies like Schaeffler increasing investment - how long before Hungary introduces a competitive brand also. Read more

You need to check if there's voltage to the heater plugs when the ignition is switched on, should be powered for at least a few secs I would have thought. Use either a test lamp or volt-meter.
I'm getting an intermittent clatter and/or chuffing/rubbing sound from the cylinder head on this 70,000m car. It has a full Audi service history before I bought it earlier this year, the oil, filter and cambelt have been changed in the last 6 months. The correct parts were used by an HJ recommended garage I have trusted for years.
My garage have spent some time trying to diagnose the cause by keeping the car overnight and then starting it up from cold in the morning. No clear conclusion could be made. Sometimes the noise was there and sometimes not. The clatter is pretty certainly a single hydraulic tappet which sometimes complains when the engine is hot or cold. The chuffing/rubbing sound could be the exhaust valve variable timing mechanism (oil operated) at the back end of the head. Access to this area is really hard and involves dropping the back of the engine down to get clearance.... Read more
The Fsi engines have a high pressure fuel pump that is driven from the camshaft. It is not unknown for these to suffer excessive camshaft lobe and follower wear. This may be the cause of your clatter.hth
I understand how you feel Warranty Direct just as bad, bought main dealer Warranty last Aug for £450. Up untill now ive tried to claim twice, but it seems although they may agree over the phone, when it come's to paying out they always have a reason why its not in the warranty. The BMW main dealer told me they always have problems with WD they dont seem to like BMW's. Good Luck.
I've noticed my 2006 Kia Sportage is leaking from the coolant expansion tank - from the little overflow pipe that sits just under the cap. Its only a little bit of coolant, and only seems to be when the engine has been hot, then cools down.
I've been keeping an eye on it and I've noticed the following:... Read more
Bit of an update.
Garage has done a sniff test and say the HG is ok. They thought it might be a faulty coolant tank cap so that was replaced but the leak is still there....

I'm changing my 06 Subaru Legacy Estate 2.0 petrol. I want a nearly new car & am looking at VW alltrack, Audi Avant Quattro, Audi Allroad. My budget is about £24000 inc trading in the Legacy. I travel to snowy Eastern France a couple of times each winter & my Legacy never lets me down in the snow. I dont think my budget will run to an Allroad so is an Avant Quattro as good as the VW in bad snow.My Legacy has low ratio lever & I run it on normal summer tyres but I'm worried the Avant won't be as good. Any advice please? BTW don't want another Subaru as I don't like the look of the new ones. Read more
How about one of these (with appropriate winter tyres) tinyurl.com/d9lwlkp
I ran a 2010 Octavia II 1.8 TSi 4x4 estate with the same Haldex 4x4 system and found it a very capable all round car. Roomy, reasonably fast, economical and reliable. Bit like a Subaru realy!
