I noticed yesterday that the paintwork is rusting from underneath the driver's door handle. Had a really close look at the other doors and they've all got rust bubbling out from underneath their handles too. I couldn't believe it....underneath the door handles!? The car's not even 3 years old.
Before I get onto the garage where it's been regularly serviced had anyone seen rusting there before?... Read more
Lidl in Taunton have recently introduced a time limit for parking at their store. I was unaware of this, nor did I see any warning signs when I parked there in August and got fined for overstaying my welcome by 10 mins. If I paid within 14 days the fine was reduced to £40. I wrote to the parking company TPS in Kettering and enclosed a £5 cheque saying I felt it was more than adequate for parking for 1hr 40 mins in Taunton.
I have received a reply asking for the balance of £35 or further action will be taken. Read more
I agree. Lidl's bread store is weird.
Why do supermarkets have this new trend of leaving their bread products out in the open where every grubby oik can smear his paws all over them, not to mention cough splutter and dribble?...
Is it me or is the instability of this web-site still pretty bad. I use 2 PCs to view it, one being a centrino based laptop with win xp pro and inernet explorer 8 installed. The other being a 2 week old Core i3 based desktop Win 7 with internet explorer 9 running. Both browsers lock up at least 50% of the time on first visit to this site. How can this be ? Read more
Fellow sufferer for some time but....
I am having some success by Key Word 'Google' enter Honest John and then click on the back room....
Little advice needed please guys.
Can I fit 18'' Rims with 225/40/18 tyres to my 2004 Toyota Avensis 1.8 (T25)
ie. will they fit inside the wheel arches, or should I go with 17'' rims with 215/45/17.
Thanks Read more

Why would you want to fit 18" wheels to a 8 year old Avensis. You will ruin the ride and your insurance will probably increase quite steeply, your fuel economy will take a nose dive as well. Added to that they will cost more than the car is worth and that for me makes a bad idea ludicrous.
Stay with the standard wheels.
The noise I hear from the rear is mostly on the right side when I first start taking off or turning at very low rpms. Sometimes it sounds like a drum beat and sometimes a deep bass speaker.
The vibration, which is not coming from the front end, starts at about 50-55 mph but gets violent at 65. I can tolerate 60, but I haven't a clue what's causing these problems. I would appreicate any insight. ... Read more
Hang on, rechecking and i'm blowed if i can find the same wheel spec site, typical.
Thinking the situation might be the other way round, the wheels closer to the centre of the car due to less positive offset....
Hopefully these are more up-to-date TomToms than those integrated into Toyotas, Renaults, Mazdas, etc. Read more
Upgrading a car that's seventy years old? When are they going to get it right? Read more
I recently brought a car and have seen that it had advisory of BOTTOM METAL WATER HOSE CORRODED - N/S/F WISHBONE BUSHES STARTING TO SPLIT - N/S/F BRAKE PIPE CORRODED - FRONT EXHAUST BRAKET BROKEN in 2011 .
It passed its MOT this year without mention of any of these issues but I note there is leaking water and there is slight occassional noise when I am driving . I seriously worried that the MOT wasnt done properly and as a result it still has the outstanding issues .... Read more
May be the mot test isn't done properly? I know there is some corrupt workshop which will pass a car for the sick of just having mot done at a little bit extra cost as long as the car doesn't put immediate threat on road safety. Some of my friend had actually try it in order to get the car selling, is just sad.
Avant's report on his Skoda has prompted me to do the same for our Note, now 3 years old. To explain the relatively low mileage it is almost always used for 60 mile trips, only once or twice a week, plus weekends away, rarely any trips less than 20 miles. We have kept a tatty old Vauxhall for local journeys around the local mud and muck filled lanes.
The car was bought as it fitted our need to carry MIL and wheel chair around easily, with its ideal access height and big doors it has proved to be right for the job. Also the back end is very square, therefore allowing tall stuff to be put in the boot, unlike many hatchbacks which have sloping rears. It is very easy to drive, even herself likes it. While it is no racer, it is lively enough around town and has enough go on motorways and A roads.... Read more
Good idea asking about the speed rating. I just simply replaced like for like but agreed the Note doesn't need V rating at all.
Anyway I really do recommend the Falkens as it made the ride so much less 'jiggly'. Mine is going this Saturday. I got 29K from my Conti's. The brake disks ...still the originals but when the pads were done they were still within the manufactuers tolerances so didn't need changing. Blackcircles.com if your interested....
Having failed to find time to do a 10,000-mile running report, here we are at 15,000 miles in 16 months. Not much to report, which is of course good news.
Reason for buying: my first Octavia vRS (a diesel manual) was the result of realising that this was £7,000 cheaper than an A4 Avant with the same engine, with negligible loss of build quality. I was intending to keep it for the full 3 years of the PCP, but after 2 years the excellent Jewsons of Oxford offered a deal on a new one for £80 a month less than I was paying. No-brainer - I changed to a petrol with DSG as my annual mileage at 12,000 is a bit less than before.... Read more
It's never been a huge problem: there's less noise with the winter tyres but even with the summer ones (Continentals) it isn't excessive. Another question for the experts - is tyre noise purely a matter of tyre make, type and size or is it something to do with the car itself?

I`ve just read your thread re boot rust .
