I now can't find the thread, but thank you for whoever posted advice as to how get car repaired in lieu of write off. A burst lorry tyre had hit my car and the estimate was £1500, although I had asked for a private estimate, not insurance. So at that price, I went to Insurance, then later found that the accident was deemed "an act of God" as lorry inspection was good on maintenance and the driver hadn't been negligent. So I could not claim from lorry drivers insurance, and would have to take the liability. Two pieces of very good advice from this site. 1. Look at secondhand parts. I did and the total delivered would have been £329! 2. Took car to another bodyshop who said, you don't need any of those parts (first body shop said I neded complete new bumper, headlight and wing - this because some of the clips had been ripped off on impact.) I explained this to 2nd body shop. His analysis: You don't need any new parts, nothing is dented. You have lost the detachable part of the fog light grill., cost £23. I can make the clips if necessary. Total bill was £180!!! inc. VAT. Read more

Predictably nice, well rounded package, not enough to get me out of a next generation SEAT Leon though which shares the platform, tech and adds nicer looks for less money, does it for me! All we need is a high output TDI. Read more
......you forgot to mention quality. The one crucial thing that Seat did not inheret from VW
my car runs great when cool or i have less than half a tank of fuel but when it's full and reaches normal temp it starts choking, kangarooing and eventual stalls, while this is happening whit smoke come from the exhaust. What could be the cause of this and could it be something as simple as no ventilation in the tank? Read more
I was wondering to myself today whilst stuck in traffic, not using any of the 140 turbocharged bhp available to me...
There is a definite trend for downsized petrol engines. But these seem to have a lot of the tech that gives diesels a bad name....turbos, dmfs, direct injection etc.... Read more
Thanks Collos, like Madf i found the car simple to drive, simply shove it gear and drive as if a normal torque converter auto, i'm used to foot operated parking brakes anyway.
Toyota's satnav is a joke, a bad one, the Hilux we had it came as standard fitment, instruction book for satnav was as thick as that for the rest of the vehicle, though once eventually programmed did work very well....
I've just been reccomended to try Elsawin as i can't get a Haynes manual for my new Polo.
Has anyone else used it ? i'm not a computer expert (far from it) just someone who likes to do routine servicing on his own car Read more

Please can anyone help I have had new shocks front & rear new springs new disc front & rear, 4 wheel alinement, wheels balanced and 2 reconditioned steering racks but the rack but they last about 4 months. power steering reservoir starts to bubbles (air leak), which indicates the pistons in the rack are breaking up then the steering starts to wobble and you have to hold the steering with hands to try to control it safely. No accidents, no loss of power steering fluid. No forgetting new track rod ends.

Hi
Can anyone recommend a product that will clean a windscreen without leaving smears please? (Also, do I need a particular type of cloth.)... Read more
Unrelated to windows, but another product I've discovered is smartgel, my dad got it off the internet and gave me some, it's an ultra wet shine for trims and tires. I've only used it on the outside but it is very easy to put on and wipe off, it cleans and gives a good finish, it's supposed to act as a barrier against the weather etc. It looks good, time will tell how long it lasts.
Just bought a new Polo. It came with "driving lights" which i was told is now the law.
The thing is the lights which come on are the headlights, not the sidelights. Is this correct ?... Read more
We had these things 25 years ago, called dimdip back then, and Volvo stuck 21W bulbs in their excellently sited side lights on the 2 series.
Some of these new DRL's are a bit too camp for me, as are some of the pretty but completely useless LED rear light fixtures.

The header tank contamination prevents the level sensor prongs from working properly and it is best to just change the tank to get a clean system. Regards Peter
