I welcome any advice on how to remove dried-in bird lime that has etched the clear coat?

Best of luck, a couple of patches of the muck left for several days in scorching temps on the bonnet and roof of a family owned 3 series never did come out, paint burnt permanently, it will probably need a pro who might well have to paint it.

Regardless of the manufacturer it is vital that you clean bird droppings quickly. Once it has damaged the lacquer its respray time unfortunately but if its a small area I can see no reason why one of the smart repair people could not repair the patch rather than a whole panel.

Here's a tip I learned many years ago, place wet kitchen towel on the droppings as soon as is practical, it will soon soften and wipe off with no effort.

Or go out and wipe it off just after it's rained.

The 'etching' is what catches the light and makes it look worse. Unless it has gone right through the clearcoat a professional with a machine polisher and the right cutting polish will take off some of the clear coat and flatten it down so it shouldn't be noticeable. VAG paint and lacquer is known to be hard and will take quite a bit of aggressive work with little or no risk to the paint. Properly waxed or glazed and you should be ok at a fraction of the price of a respray. You could phone around, if they're any good they'll have shelled out for an electronic paint thickness gauge with which they would assess the damage and then use to carefully monitor how much of the top clear coat they are removing without compromising protection of the underlying paint. I've seen it done and it is very impressive and effective work.

The bird problem seems to be on the increase. Are these migratory birds, spending the summer on a large body of water nearby, or homing pigeons?

I cannot recommend an air rifle for migratory birds as they are beautiful and part of nature, but homing pigeons are not.

Autoglym make bird wipes. Little foil sachets keep the wipes moist. I keep a pack in the car at all times and remove the er...ahem .... leavings...immediately I see any. I'd imagine ex KFC hand wipes are much the same.

Little feckers need corks shoving up their harrises!

Removing bird droppings shouldn't be very hard. Just remember never use force and wipe. Take a kitchen towel fold it soak with water, put over the bird dropping, leave for few minutes try to pad it repeatedly and you shall see things dropping, of get dirty replace it, of still can't be remove try hot or warm water just keep padding it and don't wipe any directions, it shall come out
