Hi,
I am a newbie, but I'm willing to give it a go :)

Is it unusual thath both driveshafts can be wiggled by hand
(not a lot, but I can hear them clunk. They also clunk when starting off)

The clucking seems to be coming towards the engine side on both ,
and not the CV end.

I am going to try and swap both drive shafts myself (thanks to YouTube :) )
...but I am wondering if it's something inside the engine that's loose?
(Dunno, if that is a daft question ?)

ps Independently, the car had been up on a ramp at national & they confirmed the drive shafts were loose.

Some background...
6 months ago, it passed its MOT with no advisories..

How I came to look at the drive shaft, is that at 50mph the whole car would shake quite bad...it wasn't coming through the steering.

I did the usual, wheel balancing, and home made alignment with 2 jacks and a piece of string (again Youtube...it's taught me all I know tbh :) )

The car sits low at the back, probably needs 2 shocks, and the passenger side rear wheel is starting to bend inwards, which is because of a rubber on the axle on the back.

also....what is likely to happen if I leave it , until it falls off?

Many Thanks

well, brought it in today,
and the verdict is a slightly worn wheel bearing & some play in the driveshafts towards the engine side.

Thankfully, it is not dangerous, so I can keep driving till something falls off :)

I've had a look and the battery was loose, so have tightened that up.

The shudder seems better atm, but it comes and goes, so time will tell.

Cheers all
Liam

I trust you have checked the engine oil level ?

Engine oil checked every day--as it was before startup this time. Oil/Filter change done 2000km ago--no oil loss since.--normal. The performance is good---for that journey--actually 740km--required 51.3 liters--which means 41 mpg--and that at Autobahn speeds upto 150kmh and a 50 min period in a traffic accident holdup at idle revs--which points to the engine being in good condition. I wonder if this might be Timing belt /Chain problem---I think the engine is the 1.6L Duratec-16V (Sigma) ...

Hi

I bought a used 2008 Audi A3 1.9 TDI mid June from an independent dealer, it's an ex fleet with a full Audi service history and 79,000 miles. I've got copies of the history from the fleet company and DPF and cambelt have been replaced on schedule.

Within a week of buying it a slight shudder was happening over 60 mph and the brakes were knocking too. The garage replaced the warped brakes straight away and a few weeks later all 4 tyres were replaced - garage was saying that the back tyres had been worn in a way that was causing the vibration.

The shudder is still there but is only noticable at higher speeds - sometimes its easier to notice than others I.e. on a smoother road surface. I've searched on the Internet and things are coming up about flywheels and half drives etc - has anybody got any ideas that I can go back to the garage with please?

To be honest this has been leaking for a couple of years, It has a slight leak above the nut ( faulty seal?). I am wondering if this pipe goes into the Turbo at the back of the engine.

I am losing about 1 litre every 3 weeks. Not a major problem , its just the oil is burning and causing a bit of a smell as I presume its falling on engine or exhaust. ... Read more

Hi all,

Bought a new Mazda2 two weeks ago in True Red. I clayed the whole body of the car then applyed a supagard sealant to the paint work. As a driving instructor I applyed my magnetic signs to the rear doors. The car gets washed twice a week.Today I washed the car again first with signs on then again with them removed. After drying car you can see faded marks where the signs are.I have tried rewaxing, clay bar and Tcut but marks seems to be under the laquer. Really stands out when sunny but not so much in the shade.... Read more

The paint is water based, anything else is illegal now due to the E.U. !

I bought a 2008 Laguna estate in June from a Renault main agent. About three weeks later I noticed a water ingress problem, which I believed to be the sunroof. I contacted the dealer who told me to take it to my local Renault agent to have it repaired and to invoice them. The local dealer said they would have to bill me direct as they did not have an account with the other dealer.

The Surrey dealer then said they would repair my car, and I took it to them, using one of their courtesy cars in the meantime. Two days later they told me my vehicle was repaired, and the problem was with the rear door seals, which they had modified.... Read more

Hi i purchased a used ford focus from evans halshaw last year in march it is still under warranty until march 2013 and has doen less than 30,000 miles

I drove it off the forcourt and it juddered like mad so took it back and they had it for a full week and gave me the car back, informing me it was nothing wrong on the diagnostics, but they had changed the spark plugs.... Read more

think i will just go to a normal garage and cancel the health check, nobody seems to know what the hell they are doing and just charge extortionate prices for services. I will never visit Evan Halshaw again and when they contact me by phone again (which seems to be every 6 months) they will be told exactly what i think of them.

The rear screen wiper on my car has a minsd of its own. when I open any door the rear screan wiper opperates. It also works at random times when driving. Often when I park up the wiper works bt stops after a few wipes. It still works on the switch.

I've also noticed that the rear elec windows don't work - coincidence? Read more

I brought a vauxhall Zafira B on the 11/08/2012 and whilst paying for the car I paid £700 for AA extended Gold Warranty. Whilst travelling home the other night 04/09/2012 I noticed a load of white smoke, I called the AA who said I had to take the car to a garage that they recommend (halfords in Hemel Hempstead).

I took try car to them to be told hours later that they don't have the facilities to diagnose my car and to take it either to a diesel specialisted or to a main dealer. I called AA to be informed that they would only pay £39 per hour labour (If labour costs mor, i will need to pay the extra) and then with what ever the diagnoses is they will only pay for aftermarket parts (unless I want to pay the extra for the original parts).... The AA Policy T&Cs will have clearly stated the labour rate on Page 4, Para 13 (b), ii ISTR!

RTFM is possibly the best acronym ever invented.
