Mazda 2 - Paint work qustion... - Inversteve

Hi all,

Bought a new Mazda2 two weeks ago in True Red. I clayed the whole body of the car then applyed a supagard sealant to the paint work. As a driving instructor I applyed my magnetic signs to the rear doors. The car gets washed twice a week.Today I washed the car again first with signs on then again with them removed. After drying car you can see faded marks where the signs are.I have tried rewaxing, clay bar and Tcut but marks seems to be under the laquer. Really stands out when sunny but not so much in the shade.

Anybody has any idea how to remove these marks, my next idea is colour magic.

I hope you teach driving better than you look after paintwork on your car the only thing that will truly bring the paintwork back to normal is a respray.

What did the op do wrong other than stick a magnetic sign on the car?

Red is the worst colour for fading but it normally takes longer than 2 weeks. What you have done to the car whilst unnessary in my opinion should not have caused the paint to fade. You are now in warranty claim land I am afraid and hope for the best.

Think it might be worth letting a pro detailer have a look at the offending panel.

I wouldn't have been attacking the paint quite so vigorously on a new car, i do wonder if the bright sunlight has had a fading effect already.

I certainly wouldn't be using Tcut on a new car. New paint needs time to fully cure before it is treated with anything other than a wash or polish so you may have done some harm to it yourself. its only two weeks old take it straight back tot the dealer and hope he doesn't read this forum.

The car is only two weeks old and has been wash three times since then. The signs have only been on for about a week.

Two some of the replies yes I do look after my car very carefully.

If the paint was to fade it would be around the signs not underneath.

Obviously you do not understand how cars are painted and how long you should leave it before applying anything abrasive .Whatever he did he damaged the paint work the only solution to bring back to its original state is a respray.

I'm a long way from being any kind of expert, but if I can ever afford a new car I certainly won't be applying anything on top of brand new paintwork; apart from the occasional bucket of hot water, car shampoo and a rinse.

The paint is water based, anything else is illegal now due to the E.U. !

The clay wont have gone near it,nor will the T.Cut.

The Topcoat/clearcoat is the culprit here.

When I worked at Nissan, any paint problems were dealt with as soon as the paint came out of the oven, sanded with 1200 wet and dry and put straight back into the paint booth for 'Rework'. Much better to get a reworked car - More layers of paint.

A lot of people still think paint needs to 'Cure/Dry'

Not with modern water based ! Only the top coat (clear coat) is spirit based, and put on by a robot because it is so carcinogenic !

It goes through an oven and that's it rock hard.

Take it back, but be prepared for a fight.

This company, like most others, does not like doing warranty work !
