Hi guys,

So we bought a used car from a dealer. When viewing the car he said it was covered by a 3 month warranty for engine/gearbox etc. We bought the car 2 months ago and recently the pedal box snapped, so it need a new pedal box, clutch cable etc and came to a bill of £335 to fix. I rang the dealer who told us to get it fixed, send him the paperwork and he'll get it sent off to the warranty company to reinburse us. Great! Or so we thought.... Read more

I went to the local CAB office today. They were very helpful actually.

After looking through all the info I provided, they went away, 15mins later came back with a lot of information for me to read through regarding the steps I can take from here and said on the face of it, it looks like the dealer is breaking their contractual agreement under the SoGA and that the full cost of the repair should have been paid for, regardless of the warranty the car had....

What year did Renault start putting the particulate filters on their DCi engines? I'm looking at getting an older Scenic, and don't want the particulate filter as it'll mostly be used for shorter journeys with the occasional motorway run.

Any comments on the reliability of the DCi engines? Read more

I recently bought a 2009 Volvo S40 from a Citroen main agent. At my request, and cost, they fitted (Citroen) Rear Park Assist. The sound is almost inaudible. This I discovered only at home, at some considerable distance from the supplier. They will adjust the volume but tell me that I need to make an appointment and leave the car with them. Does anyone know I can make this adjustment?

Thanks. Read more

The survey had a slot on the Today programme on Radio 4 this morning. It took a cautious approach to the findings and suggested that the cars that came off worse were the fault of the owners and that items which fail such as lights wipers and worn brakes happen to any car. It'll be on iplayer if you want to hear the full item.

Not the man, the web site, made the Today programme, and the 8am news thanks to the MOT survey. Must dash and read the survey. Read more

Just been looking at the suvey. For most makes the 2 biggest reasons for failure are tyres and lights for which there is no excuse. These should be checked regularly and should certainly be on your MOT check list. Remove these items from the suvey and things improve.

Perhaps not. Many garages will do an MOT, then fix faults, then retest for free. So it actually makes sense to have it fail, if you see what I mean.

Hi all, I have a Space Star, 1999 1.3 petrol. It works as it should but recently, every now and then when i get in it, it will not start. i get all the normal dash board lights and i have had the battery checked. If i give it a little bump, it fires into life with no problems. I was thinking the starter motor as a first point of call. however, I am not convinced that is the fault as once bumo, it will start with no issues what so ever for a few days to a week or so and then the fault is back. The battery is not that new but had it checked and it was shorted out and held the charge so I am really at a loss as to what to do next. any idea anyone. Whats really annoying is that i cannot find any threads anywhere on the space star starting problem so must be a rare fault Read more

When the starter doesn't work try running a lead from the battery+ to the small terminal on the starter, just touch it on there, if the starter turns its OK and the fault is elswhere possibly the ignition switch. If it doesn't it will be the starter or solonoid at fault.

Friend of ours, lone female 60s hired a car in Glasgow when visiting frfiends and relations. On returning the car she was told one wheel was scuffed and a scratch had been done on the wheel arch. They charged her £160 despite her having no recollection of any bump. Can't see anything she can do now. Read more

Never ever trust car hire companies. I had similar problem at Luton airport. I always check every inch of the bodywork and 99% of time I find few additional scratches. Once I returned car in the dark and to my surprise a bloke came straight to me and pointed out tiny dent on the roof! That will be 200 quid for repair and they promptly charged it to my CC. I knew it wasnt me as I drove from the airport to my mums house and parked it on the drive. I contacted CC company and disputed the 200. Never paid it, even thou car hire co threatened me on many occasions. I suggest you contact your credit card co. Always check the roof of a car.

With a growing family, long work commute and growing household bills, I would like to sell my 9 year old Octavia estate diesel for a more spacious 7 seater. My dilemma is that I need a very economic diesel to match my Octavia but my budget will not stretch to the current model of mpv for any manufacturer. It seems to me that only the latest Galaxy's, Grand Picassos', Sharan's etc can achieve really good mpg. Does anyone know of an older model in my budget that can get close to the 50mpg? I'm not a brand snob or someone bothered by styling. I just want practicality and economy. Am I asking the impossible? I know in 5 years time this should be possible... But today?
Any advise most welcome... Read more

If you need the room, I agree wuth Unthrottled: go for a Galaxy / Sharan / Alhambra with the 1.9 TDI engine.

If you don't need something as big as that, look at a diesel Toyota Verso.

Hi

I've just bought a Almera Tino on an 03 plate, 55k. I've noticed the steering shakes at low speeds, from about 10 mph up to 50 mph. Its had new tyres, balancing has been checked etc. It seems to be slightly worse when car is cold.... Read more

Peter.N.

Around 95% of all vibration problems are tyre/wheel related, have you changed all the tyres or just the fronts? The problem may not be caused by imbalance but due to a deformed tyre. Try swapping the front and back wheels over and see what effect that has.
