Not the man, the web site, made the Today programme, and the 8am news thanks to the MOT survey. Must dash and read the survey.

Do have a look at this: there's a link on our webmaster's sticky thread but it's easy to find anyway on the website. There's a huge amount of useful information which hasn't been available before now.

Just bringing this thread up to the top again as we'd be interested to know how useful you find this new information. Do let us know.

Very very useful!

I'll post how the epica gets through the mot next tuesday (15th may) as i am having it done deliberately 2 months before the end of the 3 year warranty, (just in case) and that will influence whether i keep it, without paying for the extra warranty or keep it and pay chevrolet £650 for 2 extra years warranty, or get another new/newish car. The windscreen washer malfunction indicator light is on and that will be hopefully dealt with at the same time, but should not affect the mot.

Don't think it's useful, but I do think it's interesting. I spent the first 40 years of my life in Romford where 70% (the highest) passed and now live in Portsmouth (postcode) where only 55% (close to bottom) pass. Neighbouring postcodes to RM are Southend (SS), Ilford (IL) and Chelmsford (CM) i.e. east London and south west Essex - all up at the top. Why should that be? I thought at first it may be something to do with relative affluence, but PO postcodes include some pretty affluent areas. Perhaps TOWIEs love their cars more?

Congratulations to the person/people who thought it up and did the donkey work. As Dan Harrison points out, the results are quite hard to evaluate. I expect they’ll become extremely useful when I’m looking around for my next (secondhand) car. When that happens I’ll only be looking at a few models.

The Suzuki Splash comes out of it all extremely well. I notice, however, that the Agila B, the Vauxhall-badged clone, is not listed. Does that mean that the two cars were lumped together for the survey?

I'm not sure how useful (though I will look again when I come to change car) but I do agree with the results for my own car; most fails happen for lights, and that's what I'd expect for mine, since it likes to blow a particular headlight bulb.

Perhaps all it indicates is the owners of certain cars don't bother to do basic checks before an MOT?

Exactly. Are Clios and 207s more unreliable than a Jazz? Probably not, but the majority of Jazz owners will do 2000 miles a year and have them serviced on time by the dealer. Clios and 207s are driven flat out all day every day by clueless muppets who don't get them serviced until they grind to a standstill on the side of the road.

Thanks for your comments on this - they're all very useful and I'll bear them in mind as we develop this information further in the future.

John Boy - The Agila question is an interesting one and I've alluded to it one of my pieces. It was launched a little later than the Splash, in 2008, and falls slightly out of scope in this batch of data (we haven't lumped the two together). It will be interesting to see how it does when we get the next batch of data - it's likely to be the top performing Vauxhall if the Splash's result is anything to go buy.

Epica passed mot today Given the relatively few chevrolets on the road, that must boost the pass rate for them and for epicas!

Just been looking at the suvey. For most makes the 2 biggest reasons for failure are tyres and lights for which there is no excuse. These should be checked regularly and should certainly be on your MOT check list. Remove these items from the suvey and things improve.

Just shows what a load of numpties most drivers are when it comes to simple checks.

Honest John on R4 this morning - MoT information - Buster Cambelt

I agree, from the look of things a significant proportion of the reasons for failure should be picked up by simple maintenance checks by the owners.

Perhaps not. Many garages will do an MOT, then fix faults, then retest for free. So it actually makes sense to have it fail, if you see what I mean.
