Avant suggested I post my impressions of my new VW TakeUp.

I have posted a review in the review section of this site, but in summary I am very pleased with the car and I am chuffed to get 60mpg on the last three refuels. The engine is perky, the interior is attractive albeit slightly basic, and it is good fun to drive, with decent space in the front and the back, plus a decent sized boot. If you do not cover many miles, then the Polo might be a better proposition as the interior is a step or two up in terms of quality, but since I do 60 miles a day (30 miles each way), fuel economy is a must. And I do like small cars, as they are more fun to drive, and easier to park in cities. VW have made a few compromises to reduce the build cost, and some of these might be a turn off. Chief among these is the solitary external lock, on the driver's door. To open the rear hatch you unlock the driver's door, then press the button on the hatch. Similarly, to unlock the passenger door, you must use the internal lever. Another flaw is the seat tilt mechanism which does not remember the preferred tilt angle. So if you tilt the seat forward to let a passenger get in the back, you lose your setting.... Read more

To have to open the driver's door in order to gain access to the boot is just unbelievably stupid. Try loading it with your hands full, even if the extra operation didn't infuriate you. I could not contemplate ever owning a vehicle designed like this.

See you at the Mk 2.

Then buy the Move Up, which is the next model up, and you get remote locking. You can add it to the TakeUp for £350 and that price also includes electric windows, and a few other bits and bobs. Not bad IMO. I will update th review to make that clear.

can i register a car and then sorn it with out tax and mot? Read more

Doc

You will need to tax the vehicle on first registration and pay the

Vehicle first registration fee.

After that you can claim a refund of tax (excluding the current month) and then SORN it....

Hello! The engine warning light came on last week (1.4 diesel), but the car runs fine. I bought a cheap skoda specific fault code reader, plugged it in, it scanned & came up with 'No Fault Codes'. The engine light is still on. Should I be concerned? Any ideas gratefully received! Read more

Railroad.

Check the VW/Audi/Seat and Skoda forums to see if anyone has VCDS near you. The link to the appropriate page on the Briskoda forum is below. I do, and I'm in Hampshire if that helps.

Interesting, this cashback thing is something I have never heard of before so it is an eye opener, thank you very much.

Pd - that is the car I wanted, I think it may be the time to break tradition and trawl through AT....

I no longer need my car, I'd like to get the best price, but selling it privately just isn't working and is getting expensive, any tips?

I've priced it competitively, used CAP pricing and looked on Autotrader for similar models, it's up on Exchange & Mart, Autotrader and eBay, but I've had no interest in a week so far. I've put up the best description possible with great pictures.

I've tried phoning dealers, and those places that offer to buy your car, but I've had ludicrously low offers, way lower than CAP.

Any tips? Or is the car market just dead at the moment? Read more

Indicator lights are dangerously getting smaller with a weaker orange light. Most of these lights are in a clear lens as well, so when they flash all you see is a watery orange light at the back of the light unit. They are less noticable than they were and must be contributing to more accidents. This is sacrificing safety for the sake or styling. Surely there shoukd be minimum legal reqiurements for these lights. Read more

I agree that some indicators are getting harder to see, but I don't think I've had a near miss / incident because of this.

I have noticed that on some Audis the DRL is dimmed when the indicator is on which works quite well, but I guess a similar thing can't be done on the rear.

I have just booked my car in for its first service. I asked for a courtesy car as I live a fair distance from the dealer. I was asked whether I had fully comprehensive insurance to drive a courtesy car and I said I would check. I looked at my policy document and it says that I am covered for a courtesy car if mine is in for accident repairs with a garage recommended by the insurance company. I rang the insurance company and asked whether this extended to a courtesy car while my car was in for a service and they said no. If I wanted this, I would have to find out the details of the courtesy car in advance and take out insurance for this car for the day. This would cost me £20. I have never had to do this before and I have had a number of courtesy cars over the years. Is this normal now? Read more

Surely courtesy car insurance is no different to insuring cars for test drives?

No idea if or how insurance companies view them differently....

This C5 car has the Bosch Brake System. This squealing has persisted over a few months and it was suggested I change from "Hard" Pads to softer ones. I replaced with Metelex Pads but the noise persists. (the old pads were hardly worn). It is only heard when the car has almost stopped but never anywhere else. What can it be? Read more

This ribbed rubber strip is very thin and is held in place by the pressure below the Gearlever assembly and used to prevent the lever from slipping into the Tip Tronic area. I've currently got a piece of Plastic on top of the Assembly in the Gear Lever area and this prevents it slipping into the Tip Tronic area.

You're absolutely right, they want people to buy these expensive assemblies instead of a simple part.
