Hi

I am looking for a new (bigger) car and a s a new driver I have been looking at a focus estate 1.6 lx 2001 as the insurance group is low and within reach. ONly concern I have is the mileage at just over 130k but it does have full service history (with approved ford dealer) would this put you off as it ticks all boxes and drives lovely?... Read more

A very tough question.

This is after all a very old car, I cant therefore claim to be able to answer fully, but havign had a Focus more or less the same as this I would say the following :-...

It was pointed out at my last service, that the engine cover mounts needed replacing, but the garage charge including labour was £46!

I looked online and unsurprisingly you can pick the bolts up for about £4 each, so thats like £30 labour, for what I can only see as a 5min job.

So why am I posting?

Well, I found 3 bolts in the engine, these were in line with the rubber mounts that were left in the cover,I removed them with a socket and replaced with the new ones I'd brought, so far so good, but the one to the right of the dipstick appears to have nowhere to screw into, has something fell off?

I'll attach pics on flikr,

Are there any mechanics on these forums who could let me know what threaded bit is needed for me to screw in the 4th cover mount? Read more

Funny, I've not seen a cable on mine (2005 facelift). The plastic shaft goes stright in to the lock from the key hole. If it's jammed, you can prise the grille off at the bottom, just at the chrome edge, and open with a screwdriver

Our Swift is ticking over at about 1150-1200 rpm, even when warm.
If it is left for about 5 minutes it settles to about 850rpm.
I've put a new air filter in and used some Wynns injection and carb cleaner.
Everything looks in good condition.
Any Ideas? Read more

Does anyone know where I could get a report/study on the tyre noise generated from different profiles of the same make and type of tyre?

There seems to be lots of ancedotes but few facts.

I would happily buy a set of higher profile wheels if I had suitable evidence that changing from a 45 profile tyre to a 55 profile tyre would make a large difference to the noise levels inside my Audi A3 at motorway speeds.

However, I'm about to fit Bridgestone Turanza ER300s (245 / 45 / 18 100Y) on my Citoren C5 2.7 V6 HDi, as they seem focussed on noise reduction and smoothness, while performing well enough in the wet - the only two real issues for me.

Don't bet on it. I've been running the ER300 for years, on Astras, Vectras and now on my Mondeo. They aren't quiet, not in the slightest....

Maybe your transmission got water inside it through a breather or bearing seal. I'd be very surprised if you're able to just dry things out and carry on as normal without replacing some expensive parts.

About a month ago I was driving my son to school when I noticed that the blower was blowing cold and the temp guage was rising towards hot. Almost as quickly the needle went down and the heater started blowing warm air as normal. I thought no more of it until two weeks ago when it did the same again, this time getting into the red (I couldnt stop as soon as I would have chosen to as was on remote windy road but the engine didnt appear to boil up). I wondered if the previous owner who had supposedly had the cam belt and water pump changed had checked to see that antifreeze had been added as it was very very cold that morning. I let the van cool and returned with 5 litres of antifreeze but the cooling system appeared full. Nevertheless I drained some water and refilled with the antifreeze and the problem got better but the temp guage still 'wandered' more than normal and every now and then the blower would blow cold. I changed the thermostat but still, normally when driving first thing in the morning, the guage wanders and I dont always get warm air consistently until about 30 mins of driving. I wonder if there is an airlock in the cooling system?
