I am looking at buying a new Mitsubishi ASX. I would like the level 4 model with leather seats etc but I can not decide on petrol or diesel. All my instincts say diesel especially as it has twice the torque and gives more mpg but my question is which is really the cheaper to run? Is the 1.6 petrol enough? I only need 2wd.

Realistically except on annual holidays the car will mostly contains 1 person or sometimes 2 and we don't tow anything so perhaps I am being greedy. I like the thrust my 2.0HDI Peugeot has now.... Read more

Bought a 1.6 petrol today. Got an ASX3 in the end as the price was right and I wanted the gadgets. Test drive showed it was plenty fast enough, very smooth and quiet. Might be a bit stressed by 5 adults and their holiday luggage but thats not my stage of life. Happy days.

Hi folks,

I'm about to get rid of a Citroen Picasso and celebrate wildly in the street, possibly without clothes to make the celebrations more memorable. ... Read more

The xsara picasso was Britains best selling small MPV for a while simply because it was cheap as chips and no other reason as far as I can see which is sad.

Its hard to say exactly what your problem is, but if there is a rough whirring sound on accelaration this may be a gearbox bearing. Other possibles are a broken engine or gearbox mount which you may be able to spot with a torch under the bonnet, or worst case scenario could be engine main bearings if the car has ever been run low on oil....

our 2005 Voyager has developed tranmission problems and requires a new gear box - quote £3500. Ouch! Are they prone to this problem? Mileage is under 60k.

The cam belt was replaced 2 months ago - is this relevant? Read more

My Megane is having the following problem when starting. When I start the engine and try to pull away I get no response from pressing the accelerator. The engine revs are slightly lower (about 850rpm looking at rev counter) than normal idle speed and the car sounds as if it’s very slightly firing on 3 cylinders. After a period of time (Normally 10-20 secs but once or twice as long as a min) the revs will increase and I get accelerator response. I'm guessing that the ECU is not letting the car rev due to the low idle speed.

This fault never happens when the engine is started from cold, once running, the engine runs fine with no problems. It seems it’s linked to a hot engine as I can drive the car with no problems, stop the engine to say fill up with petrol or post a letter and when I go to restart I get the fault.... Read more

I also carried out a leak off test today and here's the results.

Injector 1 was 30ml
Injector 2 was 32ml
Injector 3 was 30ml
Injector 4 was 35ml

So working on a tolerance of 10% its looking like injector 4 could be the culpirt?

Also I have had a diagnostic done with no faults showing....

if your Focus has self locked and keys are in ignition it takes about 15 mins to get them out. I made a special tool for this, anyone can use it really. Happy to share, so get in touch through forum. Read more

Hi people, I have recently been offered a new job and its going to involve an 38 mile commute each way, pretty much all motorway. I currently have a Honda Accord Type but unfortunatly this going to have to go as it drinks the fuel :( Im hoping to get between £2000 -£3000 for it so I basically have that to spend on something more economical.

I'm thinking maybe...... Read more

This biggest things what worry me is the complexity of modern diesels and costs if it goes wrong. Thats why I was looking at the PRE-PD v-dubs.

I have PDF VW and it has covered 160,000 miles with very little issues, the DMF last until 150,000 and it does not have a PDF, but still averages 47mpg and I think this year it will cost me about £300 max in depreciation....

Although I currently run a 2007 Corsa this query is not about my present car. I am researching getting a later car and am doing all the usual reading etc. When I spoke with a salesperson at the Vauxhall main dealer he said that Vauxhall did not provide a spare wheel on any of their cars, not even a spacesaver, only a can of sealant. He said this dated back to 2010. There is no way I am going to buy anything second hand which does not have a full size spare wheel so it looks like it will not be another Vauxhall. Does anyone know which manufacturers do provide a full size spare wheel as standard up to 2009 /2010? Or are they all in this together and does no manufacturer do this? I have looked on the internet but the results are inconclusive. Any listings etc would be very much appreciated.

Many thanks,

The weight of a spare wheel is nothing compared to a full fuel tank.

I've had my Ford Focus for 9 years and there are no signs of rust on the body at all.I believe the body was galvanised. Now i am wanting a new car i would like to know if the current models have this or an equally good process. The brochures and sales reps aren't much help in this regard. Read more

The original car never had any rust treatment the consequences are there to see, galvanising is not the only way to stop corrosion it can be made in many recipes to avoid rust but the result is expensive ie top quality stainless for one.Its exposure to air that causes rust so if you paint it properly with many coats you can also hold the bug back tried by RR but the rust was already in the metal the results were rust buckets but the crown must go to first 1957 victors rusted through in less than 6 months closly followed by the Cresta and Velox.I had a 58 cresta 3 back windows a piece of rope to keep the rear doors closed when it was stood still the inside wing moved under the strain of the steering box ,sequin bench seats good for !!!!!!!!

My wife and I are after a medium sized estate and we have narrowed it down to either an A4 Avant or a Volvo V50. Will prob go for the diesel engines in 2.0 form both around 140 bhp I read. Any views preferences? I have an 02 plate golf 130 bhp golf tdi and it's been fantastic, is the same level of reliablity, performance , economy to be found in the later 2.0 VAG tdi engine? Likewise is the Volvo 2.0 diesel the same as the focus durotec 2.0 unit? Which car is the best all round drive - we are after decent low speed drive and good mid range punch - like the golf.

What are the petrol units like in either? Dont fancy the running costs on a Volvo T5 or audi 2.0 TFSI but the costs of the 2.4 petrol Volvo or 1.8 T A4 seem to be more acceptable........ Read more

Avant

Unless you do a high mileage, a petrol would be a better bet. The VAG 1.9 TDI and the newer common-rail 2.0 TDI are fine but the older 2.0 seems to be liable to expensive failure.

If I were you I'd look at the 1.8T petrol engine in an A4 Avant or Octavia estate: I'm not sure if the Passat came with that engine. The Octavia would be the best value of those three for your money....
