Hi Guys
Im currently driving a 53 Hyundai Coupe 2.0. It's a great car and really reliable but running costs (petrol and tax mainly) are becoming a bit daft now. I'm looking at a '56'-'57' plate astra but unsure which engine to go for. The 1.4 offers better reliability and slightly cheaper insurance but I'm worried it's going to be far too underpowered. Does anyone have first hand experience of either and have an idea of the economy I can expect from a 1.6? I've read all the book figures and there doesn't seem a lot in it but just wondered if anybody had first hand experience?... Read more
I've found a lovely astra but it's a 1.8. However it is the VVT engine. Anyone know/reckon this will make any difference to fuel economy?

Hello.
I do hope some can help in resolving the intermittent cutting out of the engine that started at the end of August this year. I appoligies for the long story but hope all the details will help to resolve the problem.... Read more
Its normally the wiring to the air flow meter, but the break only occurs when the engine moves in the engine bay caused by turning right so when all the normal tests are carried out no fault will be found and often becuase the fault is so intermitant and quick it doesnt flag a fault in the ecu.
Quite fancied a 2 year old A5 as my next car, but speaking with a couple of reputable used car dealers, it would appear that modern Audis are not as wise a buy as you may first think.
One of the dealers simply won't entertain selling any Audis from the past 3 years. Too many tales of very expensive electronic problems, especially with that new-fangled DSG gearbox.... Read more
From this forum and knowing friends who have VAG cars - they are probably as reliable as any other mainstream brand now such as ford/GM etc...
I get the impression the cars are designed to look good (inside and out) and not much else....
On different forums, I hear more and more complaints from drivers who've paid extra to buy cars with built-in sat-navs but they have such poor facilities compared to even the cheapest after-market sat-navs. Inability to accept full 7 character UK postcodes, out of date mapping and compromise with the other infotainment features seem to be the most often voiced complaints.
I can understand the security and neatness aspect of a built-in sat-nav but paying a typical £1,000 for a unit that's markedly inferior to a £100 after-market unit just seems crazy to me. In many cases, the cost of new maps is way more than replacement cost of an up-to-date aftermarket unit.... Read more
This is a good idea for a discussion topic.
I bought my car nearly new with the technolgy pack which included the full Audi MMI sat nav, and to be honest I am glad I didn't pay for it as an option had I bought the car new....
Toying with replacing our second car (2007 Mazda 2), and have seen on the Skoda site that they are offering the Fabia SE with the 1.4 MPI engine (85bhp). I thought that VAG had replaced the 1.4 engine with their Tsi turbo-charged engines. Has anyone got any feedback on the 1.4 MPI as regards problems, reliability, etc. Read more
Indeed - It should be noted that the old 8v Skoda (pre VW) 1.4MPI is not overhead cam. The 1.4 used also to have head gasket & cooling problems
Didn't know the 1.4tsi was an iron block though. I know the higher powered turbo & super charged engines have had past problems, any reliability reports on the lower power (122) version?
I'm looking into buying an Audi or maybe a VW. Which diesel engines out of the VAG group are best for reliability without being too sluggish? Any advice is greatly appreciated as I'm a newbie to the world of VW
I've heard about how oil pump failure on the 2.0 TDi Audi's can render the engine and turbo useless. Does this affect all 2.0 TDi's or did they fix the problem?... Read more
Hello UJU, I have the 1.9TDi PD130 VAG engine with nearly 150K on the clock. Regularly serviced, using fully synthetic oil. Goes like a dream, hardly any oil use between services of about 18K and returns nearly 50mpg overall. They are a bit noisy at idle but cruise beautifully and quietly. They are quite hard to find now and like mine most are at least 5 or 6 years old. Keep looking. Go to family run franchises for Skoda or Seat and you could unearth a gem with the right history. Good luck. Concrete
HI all - the heater in the van has just decided not to blow out warm anymore and also the air con which has always worked now appears not to be working - is this coincidence both are gone or would one problem cause them both to fail? any ideas/fixes? Read more
In that case either the hot airflow flap is stuck or you have an airlock in the heater matrix. Check the temperature of the flow and return pipes to the heater, they go through the bulkhead usually behind the top of the engine, they should both be hot although one may be hotter than the other, if they are it must be an air flow problem, try changing the heat setting and see if it varies.
My spanner light comes on and stays on after about half a mile. I have depressed the brake and accellerator pedals to the floor and turned the ignition ket to get the code 6342 (the engine light flashes six times, then three, four and two). What does this mean. All the codes i find in the net begin with 0, 1 or 2. Read more
had the same on mine too, same car, loss of power, very lumpy revs and smoke, thought it might be glow plugs but they just for starting car so changed fuel filter in engine bay and all was fine 10 minute job, remove air filter box gives plenty of room, hope this helps
I have a Mazda 5 which has a DPF on it. I understand that during the regen process diesel is added to the DPF filter and this assists with the process. Should the engine be switched off mid way through the process it dumps the diesel into the oil sump.
I know I have seen some companies who will remove DPF's and reprogram the ECU, ours doesnt seem to present too many problems with the exception of the sump oil level meaning an intermediate oil change is required between services.... Read more
I had a Mazda6 diesel with DPF for four years until recently. I had oil levels rise due to DPF process but never alarmingly high. I kept an eye on the levels though.
Mine was a company/lease car and I wanted to avoid any costs to me if there was an issue. So I managed to get the company/lease-company (I don't care which it really was) to pay for oil changes between services. They probably were not strictly necessary but when I asked about when the oil level should be a concern they didn't think it would be. So when I pointed out I would not be liable for any engine damage before the next service - they always agreed the oil change. It wasn't very expensive....

Agree as above. An increase in oil level is an indication that excess diesel is entering the sump due to inadequate or failed Dpf regen. The engine light may be on due the the oil now being excessively diluted.( there is an oil quality sensor in the sump).Vauxhall have an ecu software update that reduces this problem. In the meantime I would strongly advise to get the oil and filter renewed.hth
