Im hoping someone may be able to help. About a month ago my passat alerted me to the fact the oil pressure was low. Although it was driving perfectly and the oil level itself was fine I immediately took it to a garage. On the way to the garage the breaks went hard.
The garage told me it was the oil pump and that although VW charge £3000 to fix it he could do it for £1750. He also explained that the vacume pump had gone, causing the breaks to harden.... Read more
About to have 40k service and cam belt replacement on August 2007, 57 reg Fabia mileage 34600. engine 1.9 tdi.
Should water pump be replaced at same time? My first Fabia 2003 had cam belt only change at 3 years and 60k miles and gave no trouble during the rest of my ownership -2 years and 40k.... Read more
It seems that the VAG M-K generated 4 year cambelt change scam continues.
I would recommend that you follow the belt change instructions given in the printed service book supplied with the vehicle - not an ad-hoc profit generating scheme which seems to apply only in the UK....
We purchased a Brand New Vauxhall Astra at the end of last year (2011)
The combined MPG figure quoted was 51 (expected about 35)... Read more
I hired an astra from hertz, i assume it was a 1.4 as it had no power at all, and over 120 mile of driving I had to top up 21 L of unleaded. I calculated mpg to be 24mpg (assuming it was brimmed when I took it out which it probably was not but still well under 30 mpg for a 1.4 petrol car was terrible). I was probably a bit heavy on the throttle (as it was dead) as my normal car is a 1.8 petrol turbo golf, which last week i achieved 39mpg on a run. btw the astra had 7k miles on the clock. I used to have a 1.2 corsa and never got less than 42mpg no matter how I drove it.
I changed the oil & filter (nightmare getting the filter off) and now it will not start. It turns over fine but will not fire.
I had started the car from cold the night before to put it in the garage, so it only moved a few yards. Am I right in thinking that rich fuel in the exhaust system is not allowing the car to start to protect the cat?... Read more
Also grateful to ChannelZ for identifying the EGR. I was guessing that I had found it but didn't want to take the plug off in case I made things worse.
Hi
Can anyone recommend a good diesel specialist in the Sale area (Manchester)?... Read more
Be interested to hear if you find any faulty glow plugs.
In addition it should be noted the glow plugs light on a Focus mk1 doubles up as an ECU malfunction warning light. If/when the light flashes something is wonky in the engine management system which can result in some power loss. The Focus mk1 doesn't have full fault code data logging so if a fault is generated it isn't available for later interrogation. If a diagnostic tester or data recorder were fitted when the problem occurred there is a good chance an error code could be captured.
There may an issue with a faulty Throttle Position Sensor which is sending faulty and irregular signals to the ECU when is a certain position. The solution is to replace the Accelerator Pedal & Sensor Assy £69+VAT and/or Throttle Position Sensor £46+VAT. Check with a diesel specialist and see what they reckon, if they confirm they will be able to do the work for you, simple job so labour time is fairly low.
Hey guys,
I have a 2008 Passat 1.9 TDI. It has around 60k miles on the clock. Recently it has been quite difficult to start once the engine has fully warmed up. i.e. it needs 5-6 seconds or more of cranking to get going. Almost like that sound you get when you are trying to clear some air lock from fuel lines in a diesel engine. Cold starting is fine. Ive noticed it is also prone to just conking out for no apparent reason although this symptom is irregular.... Read more
Just for anybody that comes across this as some future date. It was indeed the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor (Hall Sender) Pt. No. 03G957147B that was at fault. Replacement sorted the conking out issue, the hard to start engine while warm issue and no reoccurence of the fault code P3007 / 012295 on the ECU.

My wifes Focus has developed a wierd problem lately. When you use the screenwasher, the surplus fluid gathers as a clear gel at the sides of the screen.
Not a serious issue but I was just wondering what had caused this ? Read more
Seconded. Been there, see it, done it.
Best to sort this before it decides to set in all the pipework, like mine did. I spent a freezing cold afternoon some years ago, disconnecting all the pipes and blowing them through[1] before removing and cleaning all the jets. Then it was a case of shoving a hose into the tank and turning it on full chat to flush the crud out....
My car is a 55 plate C3 and on cold, wet mornings the battery light comes, the instrument lights go dim, the headlights go dim and the wipers go slow. Sometimes the airbag and ABS lights also come on. After about 10 mins driving all the warning lights disappear (except the airbag) and everything goes back to normal. Note that it only tends to happen after a short journey the previous trip. If you stop the car and switch off the engine whilst the battery light was on it won't start again. However, sometimes if you leave it a few hours and try it will start?!?!
I've checked the voltage via the cigarette lighter and it goes down to around 12v. Both the battery and the alternator have been checked by a mechanic and they seem to check out fine, but they have only been checked when no fault is showing.
I've seen on this and other forums that people have had similar problems and had alternators and batteries changed and they haven't fixed the issue, so was wondering if there is a known issue with C3's?... Read more
Agreed, get your torch out and have a poke nose under the bonnet whilst the battery light is on, get an assistant to rev the engine a bit and watch the drive belt.
If it has been slipping get it changed, for where its been slipping it will have got burnt and is likely to fail....
Ford has announced prices for new ultra-efficient three-cylinder petrol engined Focus EcoBoost, which will be available from next month. The entry-level Focus Edge will be priced at £16,245, a £250 premium over the 104bhp 1.6 model, while the 118hp 5dr will be £500 more.
The turbocharged 1.0-litre engine will be offered in two power levels, and both will qualify for zero vehicle excise duty in the first year. The most potent will offer 123hp, delivering a claimed 56.5mpg on the combined cycle while producing only 114g/km of Co2.... Read more
perhaps there is more power in the engine than meets the eye.
118hp is 118hp however you look at it!...
cant find crankshaft locking position.if it is the one through oil filter housing, its as clear as mud.if anyone can shed any light would be appreciated thanks Read more
You should not have driven it as soon as the light came on.
