Change the oil and oil and air filters and give the car a fast run to get it throughly warmed up just prior to the MOT test-I assume the test will be by appointment while you wait .

These measures may make all the difference!...

I am messaging for my daughter in law.

She recently had a very low speed shunt, she went into the back of a car which initially moved out of a superkarket car parked, then braked suddenly, she braked but unfortunately caught the back of the other car. There was no visible damage to the cars but details were exchanged. A couple of days later she had a call from the other driver saying his car was damaged, she advised him to contact her insurer, Tesco.... Read more

With 9 years NCB and no protection after one fault incident you usually go to 3 years NCB.

That seems harsh. I think DL work on a maxiumum of 5 years NCD on a 30, 40, 50, 60, 70% basis (although they will record more than 5 years no claims on the insurance certificate). A claim only reduces the NCD by 2 years....

Considering replacing our 2007 Mazda 2, with a new supermini. Have discounted VAG group cars due to limitations on their warranty. The new Kia Rio has poor rear visibility - so no to that. The Toyota Yaris and Honda Jazz too expensive. The American manufacturers don't do anything for me - so no to Ford and Vauxhall. Seem to have narrowed it down to either a Mazda 2 Tamura (on which I can get a £ 2300 discount by buying through the Civil Service Motoring Association), or a Hyundai i20 1.2 Classic or Comfort. Would buy an extended warranty on the Mazda to take it up to 5 yrs. Anyone any thoughts on the Mazda 2 and Hyundai i20? Or any other suggestions. Read more

I would go for the mazda 2 myself, they look really good and seem to have bulletproof build quality, it's difficult to find anyone with a bad word to say about them.

I read HJs comment re. Cruise control in the Telegraph OnLine today 21st Jan.

I only used cruised control once, when I was driving a Chev all-wheel-drive ambulance in Zambia. That gave a very relaxed drive for several hours until the bonnet flew off due a faulty catch giving way. I was so amazed that I didn’t react for seconds before I collected myself to cancel the cruise control. In those vehicles the mechanism was a winding knob that had to be wound back to get the revs down. I am willing to be corrected in that because it does seem stupid..... Read more

Thank you jc2.

"The Chevrolet had a hand throttle which holds the throttle plate in one position; cruise control holds a steady speed by adjusting the position of the throttle according to load."...

Can anyone else here who has the new shape Fiesta please help. On my Focus I get a warning after the ignition is switched off and I attempt to leave the car, if I've left my headlights on. I don't get this with my Fiesta. Should it have the same? As I've left the lights on a couple of times by accident. Read more

There should be an option under Vehicle Settings to turn Warning Chimes 'On' or 'Off'. If this is set to 'On' & it still doesn't work then take the car to your dealer for fixing, it should be covered & fixed under warranty.

We have a intermittent complicated problem with this car.

It behaves normally for ages then suddenly you get in and turn the key and nothing, no ignition lights no radio, not even the digital clock. when you turn the key back to the off position the central locking starts going nuts !, clicking on/off in rapid succession.... Read more

I would also check the earth strap where it attaches to the body - detach, clan with wire brush and re-attach

I am an American, living in the USA. I rented a car in July from Hertz at Heathrow Airport. I declined their insurance because my credit card company (American Express) pays for damage to rental vehicles. Also, in Hertz's rental agreement, it states , if you are not at fault, you do not pay for damages. My vehicle got hit by a motercycle trying to overtake me at a junction. The motercycle driver was cited by the police and it was documented in the police report that he was at fault. Hertz was given the information and American Express has been in contact with them. Hertz is refusing to deal with American Express (Not returning calls, not suppying information, etc.). Hertz has now filed claim with a collection agency in the USA for $3,600. They claim we have to pay and try to get the money back from the owner of the motercycle's insurance company. Do I have any rights under English law or must I do as they say (Pay and try to recover at my opwn expense)? Read more

Hmm, a car hire company being pushy over accident damage, there's a surprise! :-/

As a bit of a cinic, I would guess there's a good chance that Hertz have probably invented a substantially inflated repair bill, which in reality is probably considerably less than what they're demanding you pay them. Perhaps they see you as being more likely to cough up the money and go away than a major company like Amex, who I would imagine would demand proof of costs and so on....

Can anyone advise me onthe best way to remove the filter on the F9Q engine (with DPF) on my 2010 Megane? I can see it clearly from the top but it sem burrried under lots of bits! Also is it safe to use an oil extractor on this engine - when I push the dipstick in I feel some resistance after a few cm, does this mean a sump plug only job? I wiyuld like to do the job myself ( using genuine Renault filter and Elf oil ) as I feel 18k is to long to let this motor go in between changes. Read more
