Occasionally, and possibly mainly when the car has been driven for a couple of hours, the steering stops turning smoothly in either direction when taking sharper turns at (usually) fairly slow speeds, such as when going round a roundabout or turning at a junction. I feel a sort of kick-back from the steering, as if I was hitting up against a stop that is not normally there. By persisting, despite further kick-backs, I can take the corner, but it is disconcerting!

I did have a problem with the steering a few months ago, when the EPS warning light came on, and the steering became extremely heavy. A faulty battery was diagnosed, and I thought replacing the battery would solve all steering problems, but it didn't.... Read more

Definately sounds like it's losing power assistance intermittantly (and altogether when the lamp came on).

If it's a hydraulic rack with a seperate pump (either engine driven or electric), then it's more likely the pump. If it's a directly driven electric rack, then you will probably have to change the whole rack, unless the drive motor is available seperately.

I'll probably have to replace my tyres within a few months.. can anyone advise me of the best value brands/models? My father in law suggested Michelin but they seem to be £130 odd per tyre! are they really worth it? Read more

Hi Zippy, I'm no expert in the Consumer Credit Act field but my understanding is that the limit was £25k but this upper limit was removed FOR PRIVATE INDIVIDUALS in the changes a couple of years ago.

The limit still applies for business use....

Having done a topic on bad design I thought it was time to balance up. In case anyone thinks there is any bias, I don't like Vauxhalls, nor am I a fan of General Mess cars.

I found the advice quite interesting and useful, though I note there's no mention of the 'other aspect' of dealer behaviour that some of us here have experienced - why they ignore you, seem disinterested in selling a car, lack of knowledge of the product (cars, not finance) etc.

Err...it's probably the engine?

Try reposting with some usful information, like which engine you have, is it auto or manual, what speed the noise happens, does it stop if you put the clutch in if it's a manual....

The broked nearside coil spring on mine completely destroyed the top mount bearing, and I'd only had a new top-mount three months ago!

Hi. I've had the crankshaft pulley fail on this, taking out the lower timing cover in the process. Now I've replaced the pulley, etc but on starting the car there's a very loud noise, much like extremely loud tappets - but too loud for tappets I think - especially as it wasn't making this noise before the pulley failed.

During fitting the pulley, I think I turned the crank backwards slightly - probably a couple of teeth - so I'm suspecting I've upset the timing. However, I don't understand why/how it will have upset the timing as the timing belt wasn't touched and the tension not adjusted.... Read more
