Is it just me or are there hundreds of cars driving around with one headlight working. It's frightening if motorists won't even keep their cars legal and roadworthy by changing a bulb, what else are they not doing, tyres, wiperblades, rear lights, etc.
it takes only minutes to change a bulb on most cars even on an AYGO, whilst replacing one in my sons car I shedded my fingers. Happy days. Read more
Hi,
My wife's Lupo has EML ON. The fault code is logged as P0171 "Lean Burn" Bank 1. The car runs as well as ever with good fuel economy and passed it's last MOT without any emission issues.... Read more
Hi,
I had the dashlight reset and it remained so for next 3 days but is now back on again. Is this liable to narrow down the possible cause from you list or not ?...

About 3 weeks ago the ESP light on our 2007 petrol FR light came on and would not go out. After reading various threads we feared the worst and were duly advised by Castlegate SEAT in Norwich that the ABS pressure sensor was faulty (G201 fault code) and the repair cost would be over £400.00. As this seems to be a known fault and the car had been fully maintained by the dealer from new, we asked them to approach SEAT on our behalf for a 100% goodwill gesture. Initially SEAT offered £150 off the bill, but after we rejected this SEAT reconsidered and agreed to meet the full bill. The work has now been completed and we are very happy with Castlegate SEAT and SEAT UK for the straightforward way they dealt with our problem. Hope this update on the subject helps other readers. As is the case if your car is fully sevriced by THE MAIN DEALER..... just goes to prove the point that there is a point to main dealer servicing, even when the warranty expires.and the point is made too that it was your main dealer who obviously does care about you as a customer helps too!

Hi unthrottled,
You're right when you say that mercs from 2000 suffered badly from corrosion.
I was working for mercedes when the frog eye, e class model came out.In about 95 96
I can't remember the model number but I think the previous model was a W123.
I remember being disappointed with the styling and the lightweight build quality. I remember that part of the release details , were that the car used stressed ,rigid panels .instead of the heavy gauge steel that had been used in previous models .
The problem was that this new model didn't really feel like a true merc. I had an e320 auto, old shape in almandine red metallic .a brilliant car ,other than in snow.
We also did a version of the same car that could be specified as gypsy specification.A name not used by mercedes but by the sales staff .
I wonder if forum members can suggest what the car would have been specified with.Nothing to offensive please .
If we get a few suggestions I'll follow up in a couple of days with the real info.

As well as severe corrosion problems, especially in the e class ,I remember a period when mercedes had problems with the oddly named c class coupe.(Its a hatchback)
I came across several that had drive and gearbox problems.
The problem seemed to involve the electronic controls for the gearbox and drivetrain.
One particular car needed a replacement gearbox when the electronics failed.
It cost a fortune because the gearbox electronics had to be synchronised to the car itself ,so a secondhand replacement wasn't an option.
Is it because they're far to complicated.?
I've owned an old merc 190 for 5 years now 1990 H reg.130,000 miles .
It's pretty much rust free, and passes it's MOT every year with very little to spend.
Mercs as they used to be or should be?

My car now starts first turn of the key but it has no power wat so ever wen driven. I have been told it might be timing ? which is the chain on my car it also blows out black smoke can anyone shed some light on wat i should do next as the local ford dealer wants 80 quid to look at it and if it is the timing it will cost a further 280 pound !! any one any ideas !! I recently bought a Mk4 1999 Golf Gt Tdi and for some reason the car was not accelarating very well. The acceleration was quite poor, nothing what I would expect from a 110 bhp car (wouldnt rev past 3,000/3500 rpm). On the motor way it struggled to get to 80mph and couldnt go further.
I got a diagnostic check and was told there was a problem with: 17957 Boost pressure control valve P1549... Read more
As above - you need a new mechanic....
The boost pressure control valve (also known as N75) probably needs replacing, although if you're daring, there are guides on the internet on how to strip/clean them! When you say the mechanic cleaned the sensor, do you actually know what he cleaned > the inside of the unit and/or the pins where the plug goes in to? ...

Little hands make light work?
And I thought the bulbs were difficult to change on my Mk6 Fiesta! They're simplicity itself compared to some of the stories above! I've actually made it a bit easier by changing the three torx screws holding each headlamp for Acme screws with a 10mm hex head (all car-parts shops sell them) - easier to remove using a tiny ratchet handle.. And I've found Osram H4 bulbs which claim to be long-life on the Internet. Since fitting those I've seen Philips Ecovision H4 bulbs which claim to take a lower current than standard bulbs (and so use less fuel) and they also claim to last longer than standard bulbs. I've previously fitted sidelight bulbs (the little wedge-fitting 5w ones) that haven't lasted a month in Winter, but the more expensive ones from Halfords have lasted over twelve months....
