Replacing 4x tyres for volvo XC90. Choice of two premium tyres at Tyreshopper, Continental Contact UHP or Bridgestone D33's..... price difference is £1. Which is better?

Or other suggestions for tyre size 235/60 R18 V. The above tyres are priced at £662/3 for x4 tyres. Thanks. Read more

That's a very keen price. I'd say Continental as Bridgestone (is the D33 a current tyre?seem to receive quite a bit of stick about noise and oor wear from owners with cars fitted with them as OEM tyres.

If wet handling is important to you then Goodyear Rain Experts could be an alternative, similar pricing, much better wet performance but not so strong in dry performance driving....

As you probably know, carmakers now are trying to make their hybrids or electric cars which are silent at slow speeds, produce some kind of audible warning. I bring this up because a colleague recently used the Prius at work and found nobody hears her coming and just wanders in front of the car aimlessly. Personally i think this is unneccessary as theres no reason for it. People should look both ways before stepping into the road so should see it coming, anybody who relies alone on hearing it should be run over as part of natural selection. It shouldnt affect blind people either because dogs can see them like any other car and can stop them at the side of the road, y'know, providing they dont turn it into a 'shared space' which is a great way of lowering the pensions bill.

But my question is this, if you had to design or invent a sound for these cars to make...what would it be?... Read more

Maybe a loop recording of the sound a power station makes converting fossil fuels and uranium 237 into electricity?

Or maybe the sound of the oil industry muttering dark conspiracies. ...

About to replace 4 tyres on our XC90. At tyreshopper there is the choice of two different premium brands at only £1 price difference. So which would be better.... My car was very slightly dented by another car in a Tesco car park recently. The offending driver inspected the damage and drove off. Unfortunately for him, the incident was witnessed and the other driver has since been formally cautioned by the police. I reported it to my insurance company, and Claimfast, also part of the holding company, Acromas, telephoned me yesterday.

The telephone call was long and complicated, not high pressure, but a bit pushy, the chap on the other end seemed to want to make all my decisions for me.... Read more

It has now all been sorted. The TPI arranged the car hire, Claimfast handled the repair. No excess, no hassle, and no reduction in NCB.

On the basis of this, I would venture that perhaps Claimfast are acting less aggressively than they may have done in the past....

I really Wish car manufacturers would learn that not everyone is a tree hugging Eco warrior that wants to save 3 leaves per 500 years by the car they drive emitting 106g of co2/km instead of 130g per km at the expense of regular power and torque.
If I wanted to save trees etc I'd walk everywhere. I don't so I drive.
If I wanted a car that had no torque and s***ty fuel economy then I'd buy a s***ty little 1 litre petrol car with 50bhp and less than 100lb/ft of torque not a 110bhp diesel that can develop 200+ lb/ft torque.

STOP trying to make regular cars Eco friendly and let those of us who want to drive drive and let the tree huggers walk everywhere and eat veggies.

Rant over, car goes back to dealers AGAIN next week and god help them when I get there.

Even the USA has to take some account of dwindling resources. If we continue have a more frugal approach overall, it will be a less hard landing than the US faces.

I'm not very confident driving (even though I have a full licence) and would like to retake my driving test to see if I could pass and hopefully get better. Would I be allowed to do this, as it's surely a sensible thing to do if I'm feeling low on confidence, and I definitely want to do more than just having some refresher lessons and a mock test.

Not sure what I would do if I didn't pass, I'd possibly ask to go back to having a provisional licence... although maybe that would happen anyway if I had failed.

Would I be allowed to re-do the test, and how do I go about it? Do I need to contact DVLA? Read more

Jamie, please stop bashing the IAM: you have done this already in a previous thread and it was over the top then and now.

Any body seeking to improve driving standards should have our support on a forum like this: but for Maxxine I agree with others that Pass Plus is the one to go for first as it will cover the basic techniques and give her confidence in these. ...

Maybe one day car designers will learn how to make cars stronger, without creating more and more thick blindspots. Motorcyclists lives are increasingly being lost through this gross incompetence!
