Since a garage replaced the thermostat the engine loses coolant significantly though no sign of drips can be seen. The reservoir float sinks to the low position and requires 3/4 pint to return to correct level. Before the replacement, virtually no coolant loss was ever experienced. However, the temperature gauge never rises above vertical (normal position). Any connexion?? Read more

Carburettors don't come much simpler than SUs, and it's unlikely that there's anything wrong with it. Based on what you describe I'd say the problem is the fuel itself. Petrol goes stale after a while. This is because the lighter parts of the fuel evaporate leaving the heavier liquid that does not burn. Only gases burn. Liquids and solids do not. They merely provide a source off of which comes vapour. It's that vapour that burns, and so I think your problem lies here. Also 93RON fuel is low octane and not really suitable for your engine. I'd try draining your fuel tank and refilling with 98RON fresh fuel. I'm sure you'll see an improvement.

I have a 2003 Ford Fiesta 1.4 TDCI that has done 107,000 miles. I've recently noticed its starting use alot more oil. On start up in the morning I sometimes get a very small amount of smoke. After driving down a long hill (overrun) i get clouds of blue smoke for a few moments that quickly clears as i continue driving.
Start up and general driving is normal with no noticeable loss of power. Water is also fine.
My wife took it to a local Ford garage this morning for a compression / cylinder leakage test. Afterwards they told her the injectors needed replacing at a cost of £1500!!
Can knackered injectors create blue smoke and cause high oil consumption?
I was thinking more along the lines of valve stem seals or worse, rings.
2 weeks ago i took all the inlet side apart to check there was no blockage etc, and i found that the inlet pipes to the turbo were wet with oil and there was a small pool of oil in front of the turbo. After putting the inlet pipes/system back together the smoke problem dissapeared for a couple of days, but now has come back again.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Hello,
We need a 7 (or 8) seater car and would like to here some comments about what would best suit our needs.... Read more
Got the VW Caddy Maxi back in 2009 as a motability vehicle, as a replacement for our Citroen Dispatch wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (biggest mistake of our life!!) My Mrs absolutely hated it, 8 months of pregnancy strapped into the back of the Dispatch, on the "lovely" roads of Fermanagh was, and this is no understatement, a complete and utter disaster. Baby seats didnt fit on the rear seats as the were made narrower to allow wheelcair access between them. With 4 children 3 of whom needed baby seats we decided to resort to a direct transfer in and out of the passanger seat as a better option.Bit more lifting and such but as you say, you cannot fault the 1.9tdi engine, bit noisy but with 4 kids in a car it helps drown out the quarrels!! :D
You can find good second hand models in and around the £8000 mark, but considering the space and build quality theres not many in that sector of the market offering as much for the same price....
I can buy a VagCom lead and software disc off eBay for less than a tenner. Do these items allow you to change and save the idling/fuelling values or is it read only? Read more
HPI Question: recently purchased a used Mercedes Slk for my wife, from an independent dealer. I am ex motor trade so I made sure I carried out an HPI check, providing VRM and chassis no to ensure I was covered by their indemnity. The car is only 18 months old and was in superb condition, it did however have evidence of some paint work on both doors. I was slightly suspicious of this however I went ahead with the deal as these cars are painted regularly. We are now 2 months down the line and HPI have just contacted me to say that an insurance company have just registered it as a category D write off from an accident over 12 months ago. The girl at HPI has told me that it should be ok as I have an indemnity to protect me. She was a little vague as what I should expect, something along the lines of the following. They will pay me approx 50% of what I paid for the car and I can keep it or I can put it through an auction and then they will pay the difference between what it makes and what I paid. Can anyone confirm if this is fair and if I can push for a better settlement. I am very weary of owning a car with this type of history and I feel that I would need a considerable payment to minimise my risk as who can tell how much it may be worth in the future(assuming I can sell it on). It is further complicated by the fact that they have asked me not approach the sellers as they are under an investigation for fraud. Any view or similar experiences appreciated.

Hi Robger, sound like they are guaranteeing you your money back. Seems fair to me BUT GET IT IN WRITING...
So daughter has had a car accident and is making a good recovery, but her little car is a write off. It's now sitting in a yard somewhere, clocking up storage fees. I rang up the insurance company over a week ago, they took details, and said no problem, we will send you a letter. I expect they will want the V5 and MOT etc etc. Tax disc retrieved from dead car. To get a refund I need the V5 to send to South Wales, so can't send it to insurance company. What am I supposed to do? Mrs Bear is nagging me and complaining I haven't done anything, but I am stuck ... Read more
You do not need the V5
How to apply for a refundYou can apply for a refund of vehicle tax with a tax disc, or without one if it has been lost or stolen....
Can anyone explain why so many electronic gadgets which run on two AA or AAA batteries decide to stop working as soon as the battery voltage is down to 1.47 Volts?
The nominal battery voltage is 1.5, brand new ones usually read almost 1.6, why do the manufacturers not design the circuits to keep going till individual batteries are down to say 1.4 Volts? ... Read more

- I have just had my centre exhaust pipe replaced on my early model Primera P12 and the front gasket that goes between the cat and centre pipe was knackered. I got a metal ring gasket with the exhaust but this was the wrong one. The gasket is supposed to be the one which looks like a metal braided gasket. I can't find one anywhere. I called Nissan and they want £30 for it!!!! I also need one of the bolts with the springs where I was quoted £6.00 and thats not including the VAT. Can anyone advise me where I can get this cheaper? Someone out there must know.
Regards
Allan
If you have a Partco / Unipart motor factor nearby try them. Similar parts were cheap when I bought them for sons Rover 216.

Check the radiator for either have fins blocked so air passage is blocked - or leaking fins...evidenced by anti freeze stains. V common on older BMWs I believe.
