Man without a plan

Anyone know why plastic body panels have never really caught on for cars?

My Smart ForTwo has them and I think they are really good - the don't dent like metal, they look good IMHO and they are easy to swap if they are damaged or even if you fancy a different colour...... Read more

What's wrong with the construction? It's a contraction and the meaning is clear!

Ok 20% may have been over egging it a bit but cars are not like clothes, unless you wrap your car around your body, fill it with sweat and chuck it in a washing machine. Plenty of cars have plenty of life left after 10 years, the same cant be said for clothes. I do hate apples and oranges comparisons. Like i could ask you if you'd only buy a brand new house? Would you refuse to buy one someone else has lived in previously? I know you'll come back and say 'ah but property prices go up as well! cars only depreciate' but your point seemed to be you dont buy things pre-owned.

Due to a stuck rear brake caliper the rear disc on the o/s of wife's 2000 (V reg) A4 1.9Tdi has become badly corroded.

I've removed discs (the type with the bearing races pressed into the disc assembly ) and obtained new. The garage that I use for more difficult jobs advised me not to use the original ABS rings as they are only an interference fit on the disc and will almost certainly be loose on the new disc and cause the ABS to malfunction.... The official manual for your car shows a cast ABS rotar. I would check with an Audi dealer and your Vin Number. Regards Peter

My friend has a Ford KA and the passenger electric window will open about 1 inch and stops. It seems it is leaning towards the left, so it doesn't go down that 1 inch completely straight down. Could someone suggest what might be causing this please and let me know what action to take. I believe it could be the mechanism that the window sits on, but wonder what I should do to rectify this. Also, does someone know whereabout/ what part might need replacing. From feeling for it, it looks like it is around the middle section, but I cannot get a clear view as a panel is in the way that cannot be removed.

Is the insurance legal cover is worth having ? , latest renewal includes it at almost £30

I'm thinking that if I have a claim I just contact the insurance and they sort it out anyway whether I have it or not ? Read more

If both you and your wifes car is under the same car insurance policy (say a multicar policy with Admiral for instance) then yes you pay once to cover both. Most home insurance policies wont cover legal bills for anything which happens outside of the home, obviously. So no you cant pay legal protection to ensure your car and expect it to cover the other two, its to cover anything not covered under the motor insurance which occurs through use of that car.

Can someone please tell me where we stand regarding the purchase of the above car. A fault has developed, the engine management light came on Tuesday, we bought it on the Sunday. It will be looked at today and hopefully we will have more information about the problem. It's my daughter's car, she paid £1600, the asking price was £1675, bought from a car dealer. There appears to be no oil leaks, however when the coolant is, the bottle seems to have a lot of grainy substance around the inside (Possible additive?) How does she stand as far as getting a refund, because my fear is, if there is something major wrong with it, it could cost ££££'s to put it right. Many thanks. Read more

Hi Tricia, if the fault has occurred 2 days after purchase it is certainly presumed under Sale Of Goods Act to have been present at purchase.

You have given the dealer the opportunity to fix it & so need to assume he will do so....

That's very reassuring. Do BMW also run a similar scheme? Read more

I have just received the renewal notice for my Direct Line Insurance. Hidden in the small print of the Changes to your insurance is this paragraph under the heading 'You must tell us about the following changes before the next renewal date' : 'had any accidents, thefts or losses (whether a claim was reported or not and regardless of blame). In other words I am now required to tell them of any minor prang even if it was settled privately between the drivers concerned. Read more

My premium with DL rocketed due to an SP50. Voted with my feet and now with LV.

Sort of related to the above thread, if a break in or theft was reported to the police but any damage resolved privately what's the chance of the insurance company finding out if they aren't directly informed?...

Hi everyone

I'm looking to buy a diesel as I'm looking to keep costs down. I've got 2-3k to spend, so think I'll be looking at 2004-2005 for a 1.4.... Read more

However, I have a similar dilemma to the OP now. I want to buy a new car but wonder if Diesel is the best choice. Considering that I rack up 15-20K per year then I suspect that it is.

What is wrong with your Golf? I presume at that mileage it is getting rather tired throughout. If you want another VAG diesel you should be OK with the 1.9 PD 105 engine, either Golf or Octavia. Not the fastest or smoothest but more reliable than the 2.0 PD. Or if you can find a decent older example, something with the 130PD AWX engine....

Dear Forum members,

I bought a car last month with finance arranged from dealer. Everything was smooth, but after three weeks the dealer came back saying the loan is rejected by the bank. As per his explanation the bank approved the loan initially based on which he sold the car. However after I signed the documents the bank rejected it presumably because there was some change in the credit file. This could be true because I applied for a credit card after getting the loan. Now the dealer is demanding full payment or return the car. This will make my life miserable with debt as I have to borrow the money with huge interest.

What are my rights in this case? Can I demand the original payment period and monthly installment from the dealer and resist him taking the car back? He will pay back the full amount, but I really don't want to return the car. Read more

Thanks for the advice Bonzo.

The dealer tried with a couple more finance companies and they also rejected the loan. The dealer read me the response from the original finance company and the response didnt exacly say what is the reason for the rejection. In the end me and the dealer agreed to a deal. I paid back 3000 from the original 5000 I owed right away from my credit card.I will pay back the the balance 2000 pounds in 5 months as installments. ...
