my parents have an xtrail 2002 , has bout 150,000 klms on the clock ,been driving wonderfully , but all of a sudden became noisy , pulled straight up and checked all the neccessary things oil levels water levels, and electrics. then called the roadside service(we live in australia) ... they checked said il levels, which were showing full on the dipstick.. towed in to mechanics.. his first impression is that is oil pump not working , our problem is being a side to side motor looking at $1000 to pull it down just to confirm if it is oil pump.

have u ever known of a problem with oil pumps in the xtrail?... Read more

The OP dosn't say if it's a Petrol or Diesel. I believe the early TD had turbo issues if they weren't looked after. Pretty reliable car..has some issues but not the oil pump.

Have just purchased a Clio 1.2 for my son to learn to drive. However it will not start....no spark.... I have replaced the coil pack..no joy..have ordered a crank position sensor will fit when arrives, however I have a suspicion that the immob is playing up. The car has the rocker switch in centre console with flashing light and key symbol. this seems to be functioning as the light flashes quickly with key out of ignition, when key is inserted the red light goes to constant "on" for a few seconds the goes out.....is this correct??I have cleaned the 2no earth points under the bonnet and cleaned various electrical connections. If the CPS does not cure the problem are there any other fixes???? any solutions are welcomed many thanks in advance............ Martin Read more

Combined with a crashy ride, tramlining and inability to go in a straight line it's nowhere near as satisfying as my old E30 318iS was. I think I even prefer my Golf Mk3.

Push it a bit along A roads and it can come together, but on narrow B roads it tramlines and pulls around....

Suffering like many others with the rising costs of motoring, we are trying to use the car less, but She who must be obeyed works in a hospital, sometimes doing 12 hour shifts, no buses here in west wales in the evenings or sundays. walks to work when she can (not far) but not always easy carrying food for a long day, as hospital canteen food is not always a good option, and quite separately not good to walk home after a tiring day, especially after a stressful day.

So, we walk to some of the closer shops and now i have retired and got my bus pass, use that, but given we are a long way from friends, still need the car, and have now abandoned the idea of flying anywhere for short breaks, taking the car to the airport (paying to drive, paying to park) thats without having to go a long way to Bristol as the low cost carriers haven't reached cardiff yet., waiting hours for flights with jobsworthies having fun at check in, security and the boarding... So a few months ago we booked on eurotunnel, £84 return, yes i know we had to drive here to there, but a nice pub/hotel in the belgian countryside with good food and reasonable prices made a nice break, non of this baggage stuff, or you can't take that or airport food,... I didnt say it was car friendly but they have a better base to work from, clearly they've not done it very well. Holland is quite a small country so the '4 times more motorway per square mile' bit may be slightly misleading. If i compare us with someone of similar-ish size such as Germany, with 81million people (as opposed to our 62) and is slightly bigger but they have twice as much motorway length per square mile as we do and with firms like BMW, Mercedes and VW Group being so vital to their economy (one of the biggest exporting nations in the World) i dont think we could accuse the Germans of being anti-car.

Yet as ive said probably already in this thread despite roads not fit for purpose we do have some of, if not the safest roads in Europe. Our roads are safer than our Hospitals, proving Britains much maligned drivers must be getting something right.

I guess I am not strictly allowed to name and shame but want to get a few things off my chest. My renewal date is the 20 August. I had a very minor accident on the 15 July (holds up hands but not admitted at the time of course). My car was collected and I was given a sweet Peugeot 107 as a courtesy car. It seems this is one of those financial situations when the insurance company don't want to repair the car which is under the mileage for the year (02) and last year I clocked up <5000 miles - it's a financial situation, nothing more than that. But what has really got my goat bigtime is the blatant lies I am given from various members of staff from the insurance company and I got a different story from a different person EVERY DAY. They have asked me to send original MOT, insurance certificate! and V5C - I am probably a numpty but why can't they get off their butt and check with the DVLC? I have scanned and sent them via email for now. I am still waiting for an offer and I understand I won't get a cent until they have my original documents. The car is likely to be a Cat D write off and I have not ruled out accepting a cash in lieu offer. The repair centre is about 50 miles from home so yesterday I went and collected my car which is perfectly driveable and left them the courtesy car. I have protected no claims and will be shopping around later for a renewal quote. If I keep the car do I have to disclose the Cat. D status if and when we ever reach that point because at the moment, some 15 days after the incident I am still waiting to hear - outrageous.

Sorry this was a bit long but I fell better now. Read more

I had two non fault accidents in 2003, both times (within 6 weeks) my van was hit while parked. The second time it was written off. Just as an experiment I rang an insurance company for a renewal WITHOUT mentioning the 'accidents' and then rang back the same company and mentioned both incidents as of course I would have to do so to comply with the law. The premium went up by £70 even though I was the VICTIM! of two driver's stupidity - I wasnt even in my van at the time! Aside of this I had the aggravation and expense the first time of getting my van to a repairer, getting a courtesy vehicle, transferring tools over, etc etc. Not impressed when I did nothing wrong

Just popped my head round the BR door to see what's going on these days, and thought I'd say hi. So few names that I recognise from the heady days when I was posting every second minute. Delighted to see that DVD seems to be still around, but who else would I remember? Nothing useful to say, no car queries, (till October then I might have a few.) Hello to anyone who remembers me. And to all those who don't, pleased to make your aquaintance. I know nothing about cars except how to drive one, and was an absolute thorn in the side of those who take their cars seriously. Regards to everyone - from HF Read more

Thanks for that dave ,Leeds is my nearest airport.
In a couple of weeks were going to Tenerife ,playa de las America.

We went last year ,and about 15 years ago.
It's a a resort that's changed dramatically ,especially on the Los Christianias side.
A huge amount of money has been invested to make the place more upmarket.
Apparently it's the Russians that are providing the funding .
Not sure whether that's a good thing?

I thought last year about replacing my omega while I'm their ,they appear to be a lot cheaper ,but I'm wary of ending up with a fake .most of the shops their are independent family businesses .No chance of getting my money back if I get ripped off.
