It is nearing time for my annual gamble. My tank is now down to 1/10 full, we are very unlikely to use any more oil until autumn as it is solely for heating and a little for hot water, so I am not desperate..

There seems to be a trend that the oil price is falling, heating oil about 5p per litre since the last time I checked, so the gamble is:... Read more

I think everyone who uses oil is out in the sticks!

My dad used to have this dilemma every year. Trying to catch the nadir of a market is an elusive skill. Really, it's a question of whether the oil price will carry on falling. I reckon anything below $80/barrell is pretty good nowadays.

My ex-wife has had her car stolen.

She has asked for my driving licence as, unbeknown to me, she had me down as a named driver, married & living at her address, to quote: "to reduce her premiums substantially".... Read more

To put a cap on the above, as far as I'm concerned it's all over. She's got her car back so no longer needs to borrow mine (for the benefit of our children, not her) and I don't want my ex-wife to suffer for her 'oversight' as any action would indirectly harm our children, she'd punish me for her hurt regardless of whether I had a hand in it or not and, in context, it's pretty small beer compared to other things she's done (not for discussion here other than to advise you to never, ever, lend her anything or share your chocolate bar with her).

My vehicle is due for testing soon, and i have been informed previously that if you take your vehicle for MOT and it fails (for whatever reason), your current certificate remains valid until it expires. The whole idea of this, is to give you time to get any repair work done before your certificate runs out. This makes sense. HOWEVER, i've just been told by a council MOT place that if the car fails, the current certificate becomes immediately invalid, and your only allowed to drive the vehicle straight back home etc. If this bit IS true, then what is the point of testing your car before MOT is due, people might as well just wait right up until the current one DOES expire, because testing before hand would just be pointless. Or am i missing something here?????? (VOSA's website is useless when trying to find out this information) Read more

Hi, I have a problem with my coolant warnig light coming on. When the car was cool I removed the filler cap and the level was low. I've checked it over the last two weeks and the level only drops and the warning light comes on if I've used the air con. Any ideas? P.S this is my first post. Read more

If you can't see any sign of a leak, have a look round the header tank filler cap and overflow pipe for signs of coolant residue, if present then pressure in the cooling system is pushing it out. If you only loose water when the aircon is on this could be cased by the engine overheating because of the heat produced by the condenser which is in front of the radiator, if this is the case you would notice a rise in temperature. If this isn't happening its likely that the head gasket is leaking.

Does anyone (calling 659!) have detailed specs of this engine ie know what it shared with the myriad PD engines of 100, 115, 130, 150 output. I've struggled to find any decent information.

What information I have is contradictory especially regarding turbos. From what I gather, the aspiration is via an aftercooled Garrett 16 VNT. This seems like a lot of (expensive) kit to support a meagre 105hp from 1.9 litres. What size are the injectors?... Read more

Hi all,

I picked up a Mazda 6 sport ( 2003) a couple of months ago. When I bought it I didnt realise it had parking sensors as they did not work for the first couple of days (not sure how I missed the sensors on the rear bumper).

Since then the parking sensors seem to work randomly. Some days they will work, other days they will not work. It sounds like a loose connection but what is strange is that I can park up my car at night, and the sensors dont work. Then when I go to my car in the morning they work fine...so the car has not moved all night.

The reversing lights work fine wven when the parking sensors are not working, so there is no link there.... Read more
